[Tree of Life]

[identity profile] streetcake.livejournal.com 2012-03-16 12:10 am (UTC)(link)
When I saw the trailer, it had that pretentious look to it. I haven't actually seen it though, what's it about?

[identity profile] nopejustme.livejournal.com 2012-03-16 02:08 am (UTC)(link)
What's it about

In that there is the problem.

It is...sort of...about a family growing up and their struggles with each other. The Father is a repressed dick, and has a difficult relationship with his sons. Interesting right?

Well this is interspersed between shots of stars and galaxies, and evolution and various pretty plants and rivers. All the while a child's voice is whispering "soul...grace....life....light....daddy issues...i was hipster before the dinosaurs were...".

This goes on for three hours.

Don't get me wrong, it's beautifully shot. And when the family do act rather than gazing soulfully around them, it's also very good. But I get the feeling they could have just played pretty music over the whole thing, and you'd get the same effect as a slideshow in a mediation session.

I completely agree. Jesus Christ, Terrence Malick is by no means a humbled director but this is probably his worst work in his life so far.

[identity profile] immasammich.livejournal.com 2012-03-16 12:19 am (UTC)(link)
I worked at a cinema art movie theater and so many people walked out of it. At least 40%. From a cinema art theater. We had to end up warning people ahead of time so they'd stop asking for their money back. Even the people who didn't leave usually just ended up saying it was just okay. The people who praised it around my area were more just tickled to have something slightly original that took "risks", but would still admit how pretentious it was.

I've never seen the movie, because of all of the grief it gave me second hand, I could never give it a fair chance. But it still just makes me so happy to see people call it out. I know it's not fair to judge a movie by scene out of context, but what the hell dinosaur scene?

(Anonymous) 2012-03-16 12:24 am (UTC)(link)
If I don't have at least some vague idea of the plot from the trailer, I don't see the movie. This movie was one such example.

[identity profile] greeneyed.livejournal.com 2012-03-16 12:36 am (UTC)(link)
This ... film ... this ... ugh ... 3 hour pointless slide show!
I didn't get it - I thought it was about the search of God in ones life and idealising your parents.
It was about growing up. A pretenious movie about kids growing up.

[identity profile] j-lunatic.livejournal.com 2012-03-16 12:46 am (UTC)(link)
I heard reports of a six-hour cut. What, Malick didn't think he'd included enough footage establishing that Brad Pitt is 1) an exceptionally tight-assed version of the stereotyped 50s father, and 2) is disappointed with his life? I rather liked the dinosaur sequence, it was all the lingering on the father that drove me out of the theater.

To be fair, I didn't see it, but I laugh every time it comes up. Oh, Tree of Life. I sincerely hope someday it turns out that Malick was trolling the arthouse cinema, and just cobbled together random bits of footage from his editing studio which certainly seems to be what Sean Penn and Brad Pitt think happened.

I don't remember which interview it was, but I laughed so hard when I heard Sean Penn's reaction to seeing the film. Apparently his idea of it from filming and what he read in the script was completely different from what Malick showed on screen.

[identity profile] la-petite-singe.livejournal.com 2012-03-16 12:57 am (UTC)(link)
Why in God's name is this a secret?! Tons of people thought that. Even my roommate hated it, and he's, like, a Criterion-DVD-owning, MoMA-membership-holding, Williamsburg-loitering, obscure-Russian-novel-reading bona fide hipster. (Don't tell him that, though. He's in denial.) I actually kinda liked it, but I more than understand people who didn't.

HEEE

I haven't seen it yet, but I've heard a lot. But what I'm really here to say is SERIOUSLY, JUST BECAUSE SOMEONE DIDN'T LIKE SOMETHING THAT DOESN'T MEAN THEY DIDN'T GET IT. SOMETIMES A THING JUST HAS PROBLEMS.

[identity profile] lorinadante.livejournal.com 2012-03-16 01:03 am (UTC)(link)
This is a secret? Most people I've talked with didn't like it, for various reasons. My own conclusion after seeing it was "lots of pretty imagery, BUT OH GOD, IT IS SO LOOOONG". Loved the space and dinosaurs scenes, and was kinda interested during the first scenes with the family, but after 3 hours? Aaaugh.

[identity profile] ninety6tears.livejournal.com 2012-03-16 01:14 am (UTC)(link)
Considering that I have to consider this movie sort of a guilty pleasure of mine, I don't think your opinion is unpopular at all.
It is really annoying when people say "You didn't get it." You didn't identify with it, and there's nothing wrong with that.

(Anonymous) 2012-03-16 02:05 am (UTC)(link)
I liked the dinosaurs.

[identity profile] jupisan.livejournal.com 2012-03-16 02:35 am (UTC)(link)
I really didnt like this movie. wanted my 3 hours back from this film.

[identity profile] gethenian.livejournal.com 2012-03-16 03:16 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, god. That movie is PAINFULLY bad, and I often LIKE pretentious shit.

[identity profile] ariseishirou.livejournal.com 2012-03-16 03:39 am (UTC)(link)
You mean you didn't care for three hours of "baaaaaaawwwwwwww I grew up liking my mommy more than my daddy because my daddy was a meanie-head" and other nostalgic masturbation over the Cold War Fantasy Suburbia of one man's imaginary youth?

I'm shocked. Shocked!

(Anonymous) 2012-03-16 05:40 am (UTC)(link)
Pretentious in what sense? It was too ambitious? It was artsy for art's sake? I don't understand why this is a bad thing "Tree of Life" had its problems. I could have done with out the Sean Penn bookends and the ridiculous natural history lesson, but everything in the middle was brilliant. The visuals. The performances. Best role Brad Pitt has had ages, and he should've been nominated for this instead of "Moneyball." The sound design, even. The filmmaking was on a whole different level. In fact, I'm pretty sure it was the best damn film of 2011, in spite of all its faults.

[identity profile] writerserenyty.livejournal.com 2012-03-16 05:57 am (UTC)(link)
I personally loved it, not because of what it did or didn't do or because of its flaws, but because of what it attempted. IMO it was really ambitious, which I really appreciated.

[identity profile] writerserenyty.livejournal.com 2012-03-16 06:01 am (UTC)(link)
or it could be because as a film major I've seen WAY more out there films (Meshes of the Afternoon STILL makes my brain sad, months later, and a friend saw a film where a woman looks for a button for a half an hour of on screen time), so I enjoy non-linear/non-standard film?

The trailer seemed interesting and then the movie itself..was boring like nothing before. I fell asleep in the middle of it and it was so damn long too.
