I ~sense~ that this secret was directed at me due to a conversation I had here a week or so ago. So I might as well respond. Both are fucked up, but they are fucked up in different ways, so it doesn't quite make sense to compare them.

Buffy and Spike were more equal. They were mutually abusive to each other. This does NOT make what Spike did in "Seeing Red" ok. But their relationship was all kinds of fucked up. Buffy was using Spike for sex throughout season 6 and they were both emotionally and physically abusive to each other. But at the same time, Buffy is physically just as strong as Spike and is not frightened or intimidated by him.

Sansa is a 12 year old girl who is being held captive in a city and has no friends. Sandor is a 28 year old man who is one of her captors. There is no way that she COULD fight him off and he frightens and intimidates her.

Do you see the difference in the balance of power?

ETA: Also Spike/Buffy is all kinds of sick and wrong in season 6 and I don't personally know anyone who ships them who would say otherwise (though I am sure that they are out there). Some people who ship Sansa/Sandor admit the sick and wrong-ness of it, but others romanticize it. It's the ones that romanticize it that drive me up a wall.

Spuffy shipper here. I think season 6 is incredibly screwed up and not at all what you would consider any sort of healthy relationship. Spuffy made much more sense about halfway through S7 and especially now in S9.

You hit the nail on the head about the balance of power.

+1000

I ship both and agree that both are twisted (at least when we're talking S6 Buffy), but they're twisted in very, VERY different ways, and I think it's easy to see why some people are more okay with Spuffy, even S6 Spuffy than Sansa/Sandor.

As you say, it's about balance of power. S6 Spuffy was abusive, but it was MUTUALLY abusive, all season (let's not forget that time Buffy beat Spike to a god damned pulp). It was messed up because he was souless and she was depressed and self loathing, but it was EQUAL all the same.*

Sansa/Sandor, however, is an unequal relationship on so, so many levels. She is a powerless child, FFS.

*(Insert rant here about how the attempted rape was terrible on a meta narrative level for lots of reasons, but IMO doesn't really seem all the unforgivable in the context of canon because Spike was souless and then got one and then blah blah blah I don't mind that she forgave him).

Sandor is no more of her captor than Tyrion is. He never had any real control over what happened to her, and whatever power he had he used to help her out or cover for her. And whatever power he held over her she wasn't afraid to tell him off or speak her mind. Sansa's view was that as harsh as he was, he wouldn't let any harm come to her.

You must have missed all the KG beatings Sandor did fuck all to stop. Oh, wait, he did say 'enough' once but made no motion to do anything for her. Freaking Dontos made more effort. And Sansa was utterly terrified that Sandor was going to kill her that night. Sandor only protected her when it was easy or convenient or expressly his job duty to do so. Anytime it might have cost him something to help her, Sandor let her rot.

To suggest that Sandor only cared about Sansa when it was convenient or required is a vast misunderstanding of their relationship. Obviously if he steps in to defy Joffrey he's risking his life given that he's expendable but it's still clear that he was trying to help her out in his own indiscrete way.

Pretty sure even George would tell you interpretation is bullshit.

Even Rory McCann has said " He’s going to be in conflict, I think. I think he wants to look after Sansa and totally understands her position, but he’s also in a position [of] — if he steps in, he is risking his life."

Anyone who believes that Sandor could have done anything further than yell "Enough!" without forfeiting his head has no fucking idea what they are talking about and little reading comprehension to boot.
