(Anonymous) 2012-04-10 11:21 pm (UTC)(link)but you didn't say they'd pick god over sex though. you said MOST RELIGIOUS PEOPLE would pick god over EVERYTHING ELSE IN THEIR LIVES. and that means family, loved ones, principles, etc etc. religion goes far, but not that far and especially not for MOST RELIGIOUS PEOPLE dude wtf
(frozen comment) no subject
theyre gonna pick god i'm js
like do you understand what religion is and why people have it like the whole eternal salvation having a place next to god's throne etc because that is ETERNITY vs temporary worldly shit that are talking about
above all, the religious believe/understand that god is wholly good/just and stuff so he would always be the best choice, he's not gonna be like p.s. fuck your family lol
so really by picking their god theyre picking everything they could ever want or need, so like um yeah i totally believe the vast majority of religious people would pick god over this earth

(Anonymous) 2012-04-10 11:42 pm (UTC)(link)to recap, what the original debate was about was religious people currently, now, without any outside forces acting on them, being asked to choose between their religion and "everything else in their lives." you say "almost everyone" would pick their religion and i doubted that greatly and laughed some. there we go
agree to disagree?
(frozen comment) no subject
because yeah they are gonna choose god ok
but sure if you think they wouldnt then thats cool too idrc tbh lol

(Anonymous) 2012-04-11 12:51 am (UTC)(link)Religious people choose worldly things over their god all the time, is what the ayrt is saying. They even struggle with doubt.

a lot of awful shit happens in the world but god never promised we would be free of worldly tragedies.

(Anonymous) 2012-04-11 01:02 am (UTC)(link)Yipes. That sounds like a big justification for abusive relationships there.
The Job story doesn't seem to care about twisting things to make sure God's being a good guy when he's allowing Job to be tormented to win the bet with Satan.
I know a lot of people like the idea that "God has a reason" for there being terrible tragedies in the world, but if you don't know what the reason is and can't imagine a single one that would make a tragedy necessary, it's the same as having no reason. It's not supposed to make sense yadda yadda.

(Anonymous) 2012-04-11 01:10 am (UTC)(link)In the story of Job god tells satan that he thinks he can take everything from Job and that Job will still worship him. He picks Job because Job has been particularly good to him, and prayed to him most fiercely. Satan says that that is totally stupid and that Job only worships god because god treats him well. Then, god and satan work together to kill Job's children, destroy his livelihood and his health, and essentially reduce him to a husk of a human being with nothing to live for. Eventually Job is like "Why am I even alive, God?" and god is like "Dude, you're alive because I say so now suck it up and deal."
And then Job gets new kids who are way better than the old ones.
I actually used to be pretty religious in sort of an odd way. I stopped believing in god when I developed logical thinking skills but I lived in a household where I had to pretend in order to be loved, so I've read the bible many times searching for meaning in my life. There's nothing to suck the hope out of you quite like the actual not-for-kids bible.

(Anonymous) 2012-04-11 12:16 am (UTC)(link)Job's torture was pretty fucking unnecessary.
I've also always been really suspicious about God hardening Pharaoh's heart to fuck up Moses's mission to free his people THAT GOD GAVE HIM TO ACCOMPLISH- I mean, did God want to save his chosen people or didn't he?

(Anonymous) 2012-04-11 01:10 am (UTC)(link)Why is it amusing for them to read a story and judge the actions of a character in it? I get that you're on the "He's God and therefore anything he does is good even if it doesn't conform to any definition of the word" but that doesn't make it stupid for them to judge the story for themselves using actual morality. Especially when people like the OP's friend are trying to get them to base their life on it because God is the definition of love and good. Is it wrong for them to actually check the Bible out? That's part of what religious people do too.
(frozen comment) no subject
because it's people judging god and that's funny

(Anonymous) 2012-04-11 12:29 am (UTC)(link)Hell, it was Passover last Friday and part of the Seder explicitly states that it was part of God's plan that the Jewish people would dwell in Egypt and be enslaved for 400 years before being freed. Sucks to be someone born part way through those 400 years.
