All these people going, OMG BUT RELIGION IS SO MUCH MORE IMPORTANT THAN FANDOM YOU CAN'T COMPARE THEM just completely missed the point of the entire secret. Pretend it's like this: say instead of going to church, this girl was always pushing everyone to like, play soccer, but when other people rec sports she should try out, she's all, NO AND STOP BUGGING ME ABOUT IT! Clearly, she is a hypocrite.

Which is the exact same thing happening here. Forget whatever ~importance religion may have over fandom, since importance is completely fucking irrelevant here. (And anyway, importance is arbitrary.)

If you can't see how someone who is religious would view religious observance much differently from playing soccer, well... I don't know what to say to you. It's more than just "OMG THIS THING IS IMPORTANT". Lrn2culture

Protip: throw a different religion in there other than Christianity and see if that changes your perspective.

But what is important to you is not what is important to other people and pushing that onto them is still pushing that onto them.

TRUE
But proselytizing and asking someone to join a fandom are not the same thing, I mean, I can get what OP is saying, I'm just saying, good luck convincing their friend that a fandom and Jesus Christ are of equal importance!

(Anonymous) 2012-04-11 01:17 am (UTC)(link)
I think proselytizing is much, much worse than asking someone to join a fandom. To me it's akin to someone telling you that you're living your life wrong.

OK. One more time. For the religious person, it's not about "My religion is more important than your fandom!" There are all sorts of fandoms that I can say are more important than other fandoms by virtue of the message they send.

For the religious person it's, "My religion keeps you from burning in eternal torment"

(frozen comment)

(Anonymous) 2012-04-11 12:26 am (UTC)(link)
so?

it doesn't matter if she feels the need to ~save her friend from eternal torment~. if op is not interested, and her friend is pushing the religion, it still makes her a hypocrite.

Threw a different religion in there and still didn't change my mind.

Pushing your religion on somebody is WORSE than pushing fandom at someone BECAUSE religion is such an important part of peoples lives.

Pushing your religion at someone is effectively telling them that you don't like the way they live their life.

I never said it was okay, just totally different than asking someone to join a fandom.

Where did I say that OP should be expected to go to church. WHERE. OF COURSE pushing religion on someone is worse than pushing a fandom on someone, THAT'S ONE WAY IT'S DIFFERENT.

FUCK.

throw a different religion in there other than Christianity and see if that changes your perspective.

Why would it?

(frozen comment)

(Anonymous) 2012-04-11 01:21 am (UTC)(link)
I think they're trying to suggest that people are being prejudiced against Christians by not treating it as something very important to be respected and not compared to fandom etc.

I think people are more apt to say LOL CHRISTIANITY IS JUST A BIG FANDOM BRB WRITING JESUS x LUCIFER FIC than they are to say LOL ISLAM IS JUST A FANDOM or HINDUISM IS JUST A FANDOM BRB WRITING INDRA x VRITRA FIC

Not sure, I thought it was pretty clear that evangelical Christianity and fandom were pretty different, but people seem to lose all sense of logic when someone says "Christianity" so I thought that would make it more clear. Obviously not.

tl;dr

Evangelical Christianity
Fandom

Not comparable things

(frozen comment)

[identity profile] fenm.livejournal.com 2012-04-11 01:28 am (UTC)(link)
I'm not even arguing which is more important, I'm just wondering why you think people would change their opinions if we were talking about another religion.

(frozen comment)

(Anonymous) 2012-04-11 12:21 am (UTC)(link)
I think the point people are trying to make is the comparison of fandom and religion. Yes, to non-religious people it's the same. Yes, if the OP has made it clear they are not interested, and if the friend is insisting as much as OP says, then the friend is a hypocrite. But the friend is religious, she views her religion differently from the OP. If she knows the OP is not interested then she DOES need to accept and respect the OP for this. I don't think anyone is really arguing against that?

(frozen comment)

(Anonymous) 2012-04-11 12:46 am (UTC)(link)
THIS.

I also hate how everyone in this thread is using the words "religious| and "Christian" interchangeably. NOT ALL RELIGIOUS PEOPLE ARE CHRISTIANS, AND NOT ALL RELIGIOUS PEOPLE TRY TO SHOVE THEIR BELIEFS IN OTHER PEOPLE'S FACES.

Seriously. I'm a religious NON-Christian, I fully agree with the secret maker, and I'm sick of Christians trying to convert me to Christianity."

Good point, I should have said "evangelical Christianity" every time to make it clear.

[identity profile] haleysings.livejournal.com 2012-04-11 01:43 am (UTC)(link)
The same also goes for assuming all Christians are like the Christians that have been bothering you, too.

[identity profile] greeneyed.livejournal.com 2012-04-11 02:21 am (UTC)(link)
Same on the Christianity point - it describes various denominations, which one are you talking about!? For all I know religious could mean believing in Greek gods (yup, have a friend who does, I have no idea how you call the moverment)

(frozen comment)

[identity profile] haleysings.livejournal.com 2012-04-11 01:42 am (UTC)(link)
If you're unreligious (irreligious? I'm not sure if that's the right word or not--hopefully that's not offensive, IDK), maybe try thinking of it this way.

Try thinking of a political or social issue you feel very, very strongly about. Gay rights, racial equality, the economy, the environment, gun rights (or gun control), socialism, capitalism, a particular political candidate you're very for or against--doesn't really matter, just something you have very, very strong convictions about. Something you would join a protest for or against, that you talk about on social media and post links to articles or blogs concerning about, the sort of thing you donate time or money to and place a lot of investment in. And let's also just assume that in the past, you've expressed frustration when a friend won't understand that you're not interested in Twilight/Hunger Games/GoT/anime/Mass Effect/JRPGs/extreme yo-yoing, whatever it might be.

If a friend who was on the other side of whatever issue you care about--who maybe has never expressed disinterest in your cause or told you that they were upset or annoyed by the way you promoted it--told you that it was hypocritical for you to not like people trying to get you into That One Fandom because of how passionately you felt about your cause, wouldn't you think that maybe the priority for the two is different? That maybe they're comparing apples and oranges between something that has huge ramifications for the world (or your particular country at least) not just for our generation, but future generations, and a book series that people might not even remember a century or two from now?

Unless fandom is genuinely the most important thing in your life, in which case then...well, yeah, it would seem hypocritical I guess.

(frozen comment)

(Anonymous) 2012-04-11 01:45 am (UTC)(link)
I wouldn't find it different actually. The principle of the thing is the same: you're hounding people to do something or join something. Your motives might be different but your actions are the same and they have the same right to be annoyed at you as you do at the people hounding you. This may make them worse people in your eyes, but the point would still hold.

(frozen comment)

[identity profile] haleysings.livejournal.com 2012-04-11 01:54 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, they totally have the right to be annoyed, don't get me wrong--I'm not going to police people for having an emotion, that's stupid--but it's still...not really the same thing, I think. I mean, there's some things that matter enough that maybe it doesn't really matter if it annoys someone when it's brought up, it should still be talked about and discussed.

Of course, even for the REALLY important stuff there's a wrong way and a right way to go about trying to support and get the word out for your beliefs. So I'm not saying that what OP's friend is doing is totally OK. But it's still different than trying to get someone into a hobby of yours.

(frozen comment)

[identity profile] haleysings.livejournal.com 2012-04-11 01:55 am (UTC)(link)
Ah, also, I don't want to imply that people are "worse people" for not sharing a belief or ideology of mine, because...I don't know, I think that's a VERY unhealthy attitude to have.
