Please tell me this isn't because she was mean to poor woobie Jon or stayed to help her son fight a war and get her daughters back instead of returning home to play mommy to her other kids (whom she thought were safe, at the time.)

her being a dick to jon is the reason i dislike her (well, dislike is a bit extreme, but i don't like her). it's not unreasonable. i like jon, ergo. the other reasons...don't even make sense.

I like her well enough and I totally get why she treats Jon the way she does, but her being suspicious of Mya because ~oh gosh a bastard~ was pretty lame. And well, the memes downthread bring the other point quite well across. But I've only read AGoT and though she's not my favourite, I don't dislike her, either.

Ugh, why? I will admit that I like the tv version of Catelyn more than the book version (because book version is a superstitious worrywart) but I still really like the character in general. Just because she's a flawed character and makes bad decisions doesn't make her a BAD character, okay.

Usually I'm all cool with people having their own opinions, but this one just makes me sad because she actually is a really good character :( One of the few that I enjoy from the book/show.

I'm about to head out soon, so I won't be able to stick up for my bb Catelyn much. So I'm just going to leave this here to try and address common complaints.

Firstly, this is what GRRM has to say about the Catelyn situation (bold is what a fan wrote to GRRM and itallics is GRRM's response).

Thus, the question I have is if Catelyn went out of her way to mistreat Jon in the past -- and which form this might have taken -- or if she rather tried to avoid and ignore him?

"Mistreatment" is a loaded word. Did Catelyn beat Jon bloody? No. Did she distance herself from him? Yes. Did she verbally abuse and attack him? No. (The instance in Bran's bedroom was obviously a very special case). But I am sure she was very protective of the rights of her own children, and in that sense always drew the line sharply between bastard and trueborn where issues like seating on the high table for the king's visit were at issue.

And Jon surely knew that she would have preferred to have him elsewhere.

Catelyn didn't have any social obligation to Jon. Bastards were not raised among the trueborn children. It's not Jon's existence that bother's Catelyn, but rather that he is being raised at Winterfell which is extremely disrespectful to her and that is all on Ned. (I've written more about that here (http://fauxkaren.livejournal.com/215254.html#cutid2) if anyone cares.)

The other major criticism lobbed at Catelyn is the capture of Tyrion. If you blame that one action for starting the war then I just don't know what to do with you. Tywin was looking for a fight. His reaction to the capture of Tyrion was completely over the top, unpredictable and outside of the law (and he knew it which is why he sent Gregor under no banners when they terrorized the riverlands). Cat mistakenly put her trust in a man whom she believed loved her like a sister. She didn't WANT to capture Tyrion, but under what little information she had, she had reason to suspect that he was somehow involved. Once Tyrion spotted her, she had to act fast if she wanted to get to the bottom of what happened. If she let him go back to King's Landing, he would know that she was not in Winterfell and it would cast Ned under suspicion and put his life in danger in addition to letting Tyrion slip out of her grasp to be protected by the king. Capturing Tyrion made him her hostage and acted as insurance to protect the lives of Ned and her daughters. (I wrote more about THAT over here (http://fauxkaren.livejournal.com/216219.html#cutid2).)

There are other things that people complain about, but I don't really have the time to get into all of those. But really Catelyn is a pretty great anti-war narrative. She's one of the only people in the series who sees the futility of war and the human cost of it. War to her isn't glorious. She's lived through a war and she knows the cost. She also is one of the few people who doesn't thirst for power. She just wants her family to be safe. She'd rather have Robb bend the knee if it meant her girls would be safe. And I love that about her. She's also insightful and wise, yet no one listens to and it ends badly for them.

She's an incredibly well-drawn and a very human character and I love her to pieces and it kind of makes me a bit sad that so many people dislike her.

At first I didn't like her because of her treatment towards Jon, but as I kept reading, her positive qualities outweighed the negative ones and now she's one of my favorites. She's just really interesting, and the amount that she cares for her children kind of hit close to home for me because I could see my own mother making some of the same drastic decisions she did out of blind desperation. I also found Jon to be terribly boring later on, so...

Sure she's made stupid decisions, but so have half of the other characters. And she's not nearly as stupid as people make her out to be. In fact if certain characters had just listened to her advice (Robb, Stannis, Renly, just to name a few), a LOT of bad shit could have been prevented. But no, I guess everyone would rather ignore that and focus on the fact that she captured Tyrion, a bad move for certain, but hardly comparable to the actions of people such as Joffrey, Littlefinger, and even Ned--those characters were the real catalysts for the war.

But I guess I shouldn't be surprised that Cat and Sansa get more hatred and blame for the war than the aforementioned men, knowing this fandom.

I'm completely indifferent to her. I don't understand the hatred she inspires in people, but I don't understand the stanning either.

Maybe I'd be more interested in her if her story didn't revolve around all of my least favorite characters (the Stark men/boys). The only time I was really interested in what she was doing was when she took Tyrion hostage.

I feel like the majority of people who hate on her have unrealistic expectations of mothers. Like they're supposed to be these virtuous, Madonna-like saints who always love all the children in the world, even when they're not their biological children. Like she's gotta be a benevolent goddess who never fucks up, never ever, otherwise she's just the biggest bitch in history and totally fails as a woman.

Women don't work that way. The majority of mothers don't work that way.

She's one of my least favorite characters too, because I don't find her (or her chapters) that interesting. I also really don't like the way she treated Jon, though I understand why she did it. And don't even get me started on the whole Lady Stoneheart thing. I will forever be annoyed by how that was handled. :/

As for Joffrey... I kind of like him, especially in the show, because I thought his actor did an excellent job. He may be a horrible person, but I think that makes him interesting, as a character. It's not often that you see such a messed up kid in a position of power.

As a side note, I've always wondered how Joffrey managed to turn out so bad when Tommen and Myrcella seem like decent enough kids.

I hate her too. But lord forbid you speak your opinion in this fandom without the risk of being flayed alive by hoards of feminazi fangirls screaming ~misogyny all over the place. Hatred of a female character ANY FEMALE CHARACTER = misogyny, apparently. Even when it's someone like Cat, Cersei or Sansa whose moral actions have been questionable since the beginning.
