Why the heck does your friend think video games should be banned? I get not liking them or thinking they're immature or something, but banned? Ugh. Why can't people just not partake in the things they like and leave others alone.

Sounds like your friend isn't much of a friend if she'd disown you for picking up a new (and harmless!) hobby.

I am very passionate about my opinions, but my least favorite thing in the world is when people see that I am forthcoming, loud 'n proud, and decide that they'd better not let me know they disagree. My stance is NEVER "stop liking things I don't like." In fact, if you can show me the other side of things, I will treasure that insight, and respect you forever for standing up and telling me I'm wrong. I value people with strong opinions, regardless of which side of the issue I fall on myself.

Something I love about my best friend is that she can shrug my opinions off and be like "Pfft, fuck that noise, I'm going to keep enjoying myself regardless." And that's awesome! It means I can rant about shit and be myself with her without fear of her getting steamrolled, and it means that she can be herself as well! Respect each other's ideas but don't forget to respect your own.

If your friend is anything like me, she would be horrified to find out that her opinions are intimidating you. And she might even jump at the chance to understand why someone whose opinion she trusts and respects differs greatly from her own!

And if she does find your enjoyment of video games unforgivable or feels 'betrayed' by you playing them... that reflects poorly on her, not on you.

I don't understand the close-mindedness that comes with people who think video games should be banished. It reminds me of people who will throw rocks at gay parades and then go to church on Sunday and pretend to love everybody equally. Totally different subjects, but similarly terrifying. Blind hate is bad, your friend may not be the best thing to have in your life, especially if you're going to have to sneak around just to play your games.

I say play on, and enjoy what it has to offer and if your friend can't accept you, or refuses to even try to understand, then let them go and carry on with your life.

A good ol' Shadow of the Colossus run to get the point through that meaningful things can be said through violence in video games? Assuming the more classic "chill, maaaan" titles like Katamari and Flower and Elektroplankton and idk Tale of Tales' The Graveyard are already excluded from her banhammer.
Or redirect her to some good academic article? I'm sure the esteemed mr Espen Aarspeth must have expressed his opinion in this field too...

Screw that - get your console and play the games you like! As if she should have any say over how you spend your time in your own home. And I think it's really sweet that your boyfriend introduced you to games you enjoy, and that you guys can play them together. Just have fun, that's what games are for!

Wait, have you talked to your friend why does she want video games to be banned? If she's misguided, talk to her. If she comes up with a stupid argument that stereotypes and generalizes us video game lovers (and you), you should tell her up-front that you like playing them and see if she can accept it. If she does disown you for liking it, then it's quite clear that she isn't an accepting friend to begin with.

Friends respect and accept each other's differences. Always remember that.
