Why the hell does your friend support banning all video games? I can sort of get "the video game industry can't be trusted to regulate itself and we should have laws about it instead" even if I don't agree, but banning them altogether? Why?

Because video games are an easy scapegoat. Trying to ban all video games is a lot more black and white then, say, realizing that no one thing completely dictates how a person will be as an adult and that every case is different.

Or asking that parents take responsibility for their children and keep an eye on what kind of media the kid's consuming/ what the kid is emotionally ready for. Or advocating for teachers to have the training to step up and intervene if there's a problem that the parents aren't aware of/ refusing to take care of.

Actually, the videogame industry sounds like it regulates itself way better than its distributors. You know, the kind who casually puts "USED GAME" stickers right on top of the PEGI/ESRB/what have you ratings. ._.
I'd like a law against that sort of thing.

I think the video game industry is doing a good enough job, at least where I'm from. Partly because there's going to be a moral panic if they fuck up, and they don't want that, so. All I'm saying is that I really do get if people think an industry devoted to making money from selling a thing can't be trusted to sell it ethically.

Also, I hate that too.

Makes me wonder if that includes video games that aren't action/fighting games. Like educational video games! I played the hell out of this one Sesame Street game on the original Nintendo a lot as a kid, introduced it to my niece and she loves it too.

Video games aren't bad, but people like the OP's friend probably don't allow for the line of reasoning to extend to educational/strategic/etc games D:
