what do you expect when you dress like a playboy bunny?

(Anonymous) 2012-05-01 11:04 pm (UTC)(link)
So what you're saying is, you believe people who dress in skimpy outfits should be made to feel uncomfortable? Because, you know, they're just asking for it, dressing like that!

You sound like a winner.

There's a difference between a skimpy outfit and and a playboy bunny

(Anonymous) 2012-05-01 11:15 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't think that's what anon was saying. Most people aren't going to have seen this series and know what it's a reference to, and are going to assume it's a playboy bunny suit and approach it as so. That's the dominant cultural reference in most people's minds as opposed to this anime.

Gotta agree. You reflect yourself in the way that you dress, if you dress like a tramp you're telling everyone you're a tramp. If I walked around town with my ta-tas all hanging out and my ass cheeks coming out the bottom of my shorts, I'd expect to get hit on my every sleaze ball in town, possibly raped, while if I dress like a normal ass person I'd expect to get treated with respect. It may not be fair, but it's truths.

You might've had a point (the way we dress CAN have an affect on the way people treat us, this is undeniable, whether you believe it's right or wrong), but then you lost it by the end.

Nope, nope. You can cover up every inch of your body and still get raped.

If you start victim-blaming, there's just no winning: "but you wore a short skirt, right? Oh, you were cover from head to toe? You wore a niqab when you got raped? Well, clearly, it's because you were out at night or because you flaunted your religion in your way of dressing and that's why you got raped."

Dressing in a modest manner might get you more respect, but it won't prevent rape. Dressing in an "indecent" manner might get you more negative attention, but it doesn't make it all your fault if you get raped. Personal responsibility applies to the rapist as well.

In short, your victim-blaming is gross.

Please tell me you are not saying this would be your FAULT. How disgusting.

DA

While I think she doesn't deserve to made uncomfortable by virtue of people being skeevs and leering or being nasty or something, it really depends on what makes her uncomfortable.

If she doesn't like getting hit on period, I don't know what to say. Men and women both hit on clothed people. But since they can see more of your body, you look more attractive, and therefore they are more likely to hit on you. It's not that you're a target, you just look more attractive and are going to experience more come-ons from a wider range of people for it.

(Anonymous) 2012-05-02 08:22 am (UTC)(link)
OP

I'd prefer not to get hit on overtly, as my girlfriend's going to be there and I don't want her to feel uncomfortable, but I don't mind at all. That's just friendly flattery, and strangers making friends at a con aren't to know I'm not single. I'm just talking about grossly inappropriate, like touching or rape insinuation or not stopping hitting on me if I tell them I'm flattered but attached. That's what I mean.

[identity profile] harpsi-fizz.livejournal.com 2012-05-01 11:23 pm (UTC)(link)
I might be wrong, but I think that's actually an outfit from an anime called Idol Project. I'll have to look to make sure, but I think it is.

(Anonymous) 2012-05-01 11:24 pm (UTC)(link)
how many people are going to know that though and can people be faulted for assuming it's playboy which is waaaaay more mainstream?

(Anonymous) 2012-05-01 11:27 pm (UTC)(link)
People can be faulted for being assholes. It doesn't really matter where the outfit came from.

[identity profile] harpsi-fizz.livejournal.com 2012-05-01 11:29 pm (UTC)(link)
*Shrug* Iunno. They could ask the O.P.? The thing is, the O.P never said where this costume will be worn, when, and all that. For a convention? For a play? We don't have any idea.

Well, whatever it is, I hope that everyone involved does the easiest thing, which is "if you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all".

It is a Playboy bunny outfit, but the character wearing it is the main character of a very iconic short anime (Daicon IV) created for a Japanese scifi con by the people who would eventually become Gainax (Neon Genesis, FLCL, Gurren Lagann.... Apparently the outfit and the unlicensed music makes this nigh-officially-unreleasable in the US.

Assuming that it's being worn at an anime con, I'd think there'd be fans who'd recognize it for what it is, but it'd be a lot harder to recognize in a more general con, Halloween, etc. In the case of which, I thoroughly encourage OP either to accessorize with the sweet flying, glowing sword OR get ahold of a portable speaker system, blast ELO, and convince other people in costume to follow them around, fighting, dancing, and posing (wait, that last one. Do that last one).

Seriously, if someone wearing the Daicon IV outfit UNITES ALL COSPLAYERS UNDER ELO, that would be fantastic. And in-character!

[identity profile] writerserenyty.livejournal.com 2012-05-02 01:55 am (UTC)(link)
+1 for advocating blasting ELO. God I love ELO. <333

And since then we could see Gainax huge love for animated explosions XD

I always liked how most of my favorite characters are in this video. It's just hard to see them unless you have a laserdisc quality version and the ability to stop the film frame by frame

ETA: Scratch that, I always liked how pretty much my favorite EVERYTHING is in this video. There's even an old AD&D hex map in there

Thank you for letting me know about this anime indirectly. I have no idea about its quality, but as a fan of Japanese idols I kind of need to see this.

OP

She's not an idol! Um, not really anyway. The person who posted the Daicon IV video was completely on the money. :3

There's a difference between street clothes and cosplay.

Not saying that anybody should get harrassed while wearing skimpy clothes normally, but it sounds like OP is planning on wearing this to a convention. Where it's socially acceptable to wear a bunch of weird shit, and where there's a very different context for people being scantily clad. Shouldn't happen anywhere, but it really shouldn't happen at cons. Everyone's there because they like nerdy things, and that's why people cosplay in the first place, you know?

Violence over it is probably a bad idea, just because she'll get kicked out and probably become a con legend as "that bunny girl who punched someone in the mouth," but she really should be able to cosplay at a goddamn convention without getting creeped on.

(Anonymous) 2012-05-02 07:37 pm (UTC)(link)
All of this.

And it's a shame she'd get a bad reputation for standing up for herself. :/
