Same here, anon. I mean it's one thing to be an ass, but I don't get why it's suddenly a crime to give someone polite constructive criticism. If they don't want it, they can ignore it. I like getting concrit (one of my favorite reviews constantly points out grammatical errors in my stories). I think if you choose to put your work on display, you run the risk of getting negative comments on it. As long as the people are doing so politely, I don't think there is anything wrong.

Concrit and 'negative comments' aren't the same thing. Concrit is supposed to actually be of use, not just putting the work down. I think a lot of fan writers don't ask for concrit because many people's idea of what constitutes actual helpful critique is wrong.

And besides, as the anon above said, it should not be the readers' responsibility to help the author improve. As a reader, all I generally want to do is read and enjoy, not teach.

Yes, I'm aware. I made that distinction in my comment. However, concrit is still going to have a negative aspect to it, otherwise it wouldn't be concrit. And I never said it was the readers' responsibility to help the author improve, but I think a person should be allowed to give an honest review without being attacked for it. If you don't want to give concrit that's fine, but if someone does want to they should also have that right as long as they are polite (flames are a different thing completely).

To be honest I think things are better as they are now. If I want critique, I can get a beta to check my work for me and talk it through in depth if I feel I need it. I would rather that than receive numerous comments from entitled reviewers pointing out everything that doesn't fit with what the commenter personally likes.

What if the "honest review" they give is 100% stupid? Why do you assume that every piece of concrit would improve the piece it's about?

I've gotten things like "I don't think this character should be gay. Here are tl;dr reasons why." or "I think you should change the whole point of the piece." or "You should add romance. It would be better with romance." - All without me asking for crit, by the way.

That kind of stuff doesn't deserve to be told off, just because it's "honest crit" from the reader who happens to be homophobic or missing the theme or just interested in romance?

Because that's different from actual concrit?

(Anonymous) 2012-05-06 01:53 am (UTC)(link)
They didn't say concrit. They said honest review.

many people's idea of what constitutes actual helpful critique is wrong.

I think its less this and more that so many writers are special snowflakes who can't handle anyone saying something thats not positive about their writing. I'm talking particularly of the people who say "concrit appreciated" when what they actually mean is "you'd better tell me how fabulous I am and nothing less".

I agree its not the readers responsibility to teach however I think OP was more making the point that there are people reading who probably want to say something like "I thought that dialogue was a bit OOC in that scene" or "I didn't understand the wording in this bit" or "oh you made a grammatical error here", but these people refrain because of the perception that nobody can see constructive feedback as constructive and only as "flaming" or just being mean.
