I never felt like that in a romantic sense, but I remember freaking out when I was growing up and getting older than my favorite cartoon characters. I was so sad when I was older than "Arthur" and the kids from "Recess." :(

Ignoring the fact that you can't marry a fictional character, why would you being older than him matter? Tons of people date people younger than they are and it's not a big deal. My mother is like five years older than my father, for example.

Yeah, echoing what everyone else is saying. Ignoring the part where you can't marry a fictional character, why can't you marry someone younger than you?

I used to get really cross and antsy about my birthday, too, because I hated being older than my favorite characters, so I sympathize on that, Secret Poster. I wonder why that is. My closest guess would be that somehow we feel like it's "not OK" to admire and sort of "look up to" someone younger than we are.

Ignoring the ridiculous part about "not being able to marry the character" and whatnot.

I understand the feeling, though. Growing older than your favorite characters can be a strange and unsettling experience. There's one character who I'm remarkably similar to in a lot of ways (and I almost never identify with characters like that, so it's not just me going LOL THE X TO MY Y or whatever). This character's life starts turning around when he's 22, and that was kind of inspiration for me--you know, to make me think that my life would start to turn around by the time I was 22, too.

Not everything in my life is the same as it's always been, but for the most part, I'm still stuck in the same rut. And now I'm 23. And I'm disappointed in myself for not doing enough to change my life. I know it was stupid to think that I'd get out of my rut just because a fictional character got out of his, but I'm still disappointed. I reassure myself with the knowledge that his life didn't really settle down until he was 26 and that means I've still got time, too, but now I'm distinctly aware that I'm just setting myself up for disappointment. Again.

I wonder if OP and his/her fictional crush are currently 17, and OP is turning 18 which would make him/her a statutory rapist if his/her fantasies were real. Or whatever the equivalent legal ages would be where OP lives.

Or maybe her family/culture disapproves of an older woman marrying a younger man to the extent that it wouldn't be plausible.

That being said, fantasy is fantasy, but little things like that can ruin fantasies for some people.

No you aren't. In fantasy you are the age you want to be. For the purposes of marrying a fandom crush, I've been 25 for the last 20 years.
