1. Good for you. Nothing wrong with not liking something other people like.
2. There are other words to that song.
3. It's cute and catchy and there's nothing wrong with people who do like it.

TMBG! Birdhouse only has the phrase "birdhouse in your soul" in it twelve times. Considering there are two usages of it per chorus, and it ends on a repeat of the chorus, this is really not that many times.

But really, I suppose I can see where people who don't like them would think that their songs are pointless and trying too hard to be funny and actually just leave listeners in the dark. But a lot of their songs do feature puns, wordplay, awesome references to awesome things, and just general funtimes.

They Might Be Giants: my favorite band, but not for everyone. I don't think this makes you less of a nerd, OP, or less of a human. (Unless you happened to not be either of those things to begin with.)

I don't really get the appeal of this band either but I've never heard anyone refer to them as "deep" before

Generally, I think they're going for funny. Or weird.

Which is probably why you don't like them -- what works for one person as humor doesn't necessarily work for another. Case in point: Homestuck does nothing for me, except occasionally creep me the fuck out. But people who like it, and there are tons, see it as the Greatest of Nerd Things, while I just scratch my head in perplexed indifference until something that bothers me happens and then I scratch my head in perplexed bothered.

That's the way funny works. A lot of people like to pretend some things are just plain funny to everyone, especially things most nerds like. But it's not true.

(Anonymous) 2012-05-11 11:35 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm not a fan, but I vaguely remember liking them twenty years ago, and I think they're infinitely better than Jonathan Coulton, whom all my nerd friends are way more into.

How weird, last weekend I went out for karaoke with about seven other people and someone picked that song, and I was the only other one who knew it. Meanwhile, everyone else was like "wtf is this I don't even?!" You wouldn't happen to be one of them, by any chance, would you?

But yeah, I never thought their songs were deep, just very catchy and fun to sing.

[identity profile] glamourcorpse.livejournal.com 2012-05-12 12:08 am (UTC)(link)
Are you calling me a nerd because I like them? DAMN YOU. j/k I don't care. I'm sorry someone made you feel bad that you didn't like them. That sucks. Are you the sort of person that focuses only on what an artist is saying not how? That does happen, it's not bad, it just changes the way you hear things. They are very experimental with sound and how words sound. Not every song is the same. (John obviously sounds the same...) I mean She's an Angel is nothing like Hotel Detective. Not trying to convince you, just having a dialog. I fucking LOVE talking about music.

TMBG is THAT highly regarded? Did not know that! I enjoy TMBG, and this is my favorite song by them, but you most certainly don't have to like them.

Though the lyrics are more than Birdhouse in your Soul. Honestly the part I appreciate most is the "after killing Jason off and countless screaming argonauts" line, because as a mythology nerd that line blew my mind the first time I heard it.

Actually, this music video has a weird place in my memory, because it was the first music video I saw on the computer... YEARS after the fact of it coming out. But it's nostalgic for that reason!

They're supposed to be deep? I like them because they sound so silly.... I mean, my favorite is "Birdhouse in Your Soul" because it just sounds really ridiculous. >_>;

Also, Why Does the Sun Shine is amazing.

[identity profile] zenity.livejournal.com 2012-05-12 12:53 am (UTC)(link)
Who even tells you "you're not a REAL nerd if you don't like tmbg" ???? what. That's ridiculous, forget them. If you don't like them that's totally fine?

"Every one of their songs sounds like the punchline of a joke I didn't hear the setup for."

hahaha oh my god I like that analogy.

The song is sung from the point of view of a kids night light that is shaped like a blue canary. I suppose it could be considered deep, on some level. If you actually listen to the lyrics and know what they mean, it leans more towards deep in a fun nonsensical way.

But then again, maybe its just a song about a night light.

In any case, the song is over 20 years old now, so I think if people are still loving and enjoying it then more power to the band.

(Anonymous) 2012-05-12 01:00 am (UTC)(link)
I freaking love TMBG but for different reasons. I LOVE the children's music - it's like a modern version of schoolhouse rock. They have a song about the difference between speed and velocity. And they tackle evolution without blinking - they have a song called "Science is Real." Another one called "My brother the ape." They're all awesome.

(Anonymous) 2012-05-12 01:17 am (UTC)(link)
See, if you had called "Whistling in the Dark" or "Older" repetitive, I would totally understand. But "Birdhouse in Your Soul"? Of course you know, this means war.

I don't know about them being deep, or them being a necessity for "nerds."

That said, I prefer the version of "Birdhouse in Your Soul" sung by Kristin Chenoweth and Ellen Greene in Pushing Daisies.

The joke being, of course, that after referencing the title earlier in the episode, they were singing it while driving through a field of windmills.

I like the band, but the wiki is pretty nuts. The song interpretations are so far off it's funny. I read an interpretation of "the cap'm" which claimed it was a rivalry song between the johns. loled so hard. I think it happens more with "cult" bands and those which are popular, but not top of the pops popular. It cultivates a rabid fanbase.

I mean, most fans I don't agree with. I like TMBG's new stuff better than their old stuff, their albums after and including Mink Car are my faves. And not just their kids albums. Birdhouse is kind of ehh, but it sounds better in live shows done this or the last decade. The synth-pop sound their old stuff had drives me batty.

But hey --- I don't care about other people's taste in music too. Who cares? People ask me my fave band, I say "TMBG". They don't know who that is, so what, it's all cool. Rabid fans man... I know why they exist but I can't stand them.

Why do I like the band so much they're my fave? It's hard to explain, and all personal. It really boils down to "I like their music the most". Peace on. And remember, Particle man is a fucking deep song. About the battle between science and religion, man and the world, John and the other John.

They Might Be Giants is supposed to be "deep"? I thought they were just supposed to be silly and weird in a cute way with a few nerd jokes here and there ("particle man, particle man...").

People make secrets all the time about things they don't like. This isn't even a really dickish one. It's just an opinion. Sheesh.
