Zutara and Makorra seem to somehow attract/start all the fandom wank...I haven't the effing-est clue why.

yeah, the LoK fandom has pretty much been about as dumb as I expected. I've also seen a fair amount of Bolin fangirls on tumblr call Korra a "whore" for daring not to return Bolin's feelings....so yeah. (to be fair to them though, I've also seen a lot of fansfans who sympathized with both Bolin and Korra after that episode)

I've unwatched the majority of LoK blogs I was watching and have abandoned the fandom. I missed it with AtlA because I was years late. But this?

URGH.

So many disgusting people - especially where Asami is concerned. I hope Masami is endgame and Mako keeps being "OOC". I'd hate to see them feel justified after such horrid behaviour. If that's how they treat a fictional girl I'd hate to see what they're like IRL when their crush likes someone else. >:[

eta: oh, and this pisses me off. New girl who is nice = "bitch, whore, slut!". New guy who is mean = "hot, sexy, awesome"

Honest question: should I bother with this show at all? The fandom hype is turning me off it week by week, but at the same time I'm afraid I'm letting fandom stupidity keep me from something good.

FTR, I do not give a single constipated turd about shipping. I just want to know if this show is good enough to bother with despite the fandom being a bunch of entitled shits.

*sigh* Yeah. This fandom is reminding me why I'm grateful I didn't get into ATLA fandom until three years after the show was already done. It's making me ashamed to admit a preference for Makorra, which I guess is how the sane Zutarians felt the first time around.

Seriously, fandom. THAT IS NOT WHAT OOC MEANS. YOUR HEADCANON IS OOC.

Although, if you're looking to avoid much wank: my advice is to get off Tumblr for a while. The wank is absolutely awful there.

...y'know, even if we're playing the "he's Zuko 2.0!" card, Zuko was a doofus about love too. I mean, he tried to juggle to impress a girl he was crushing on and gave Mai a shell because "don't girls like pretty things?". He was not the suave romantic fangirls try to make him out to be. And that's what I liked about him. Socially awkward to the max.

I'm disappointed fandom's going right back to where it was years ago, but not really surprised. Hell, even before the show started there was wank. Having material to go off of it just fuel to the fire.

I was relieved that they gave Mako a personality trait that wasn't "handsome broody jerk". Idk, the Korra fandom can be pretty entitled. I've seen plenty that have a good sense of self-deprecating humor about the whole thing, but I guess the loudest are also the worst. I think that whole episode was good, but the fandom reaction was both extremely hilarious and extremely disappointing.

I'm so confused as to why everyone here is talking about how tumblr LOK fandom is so horrible. I have seen/experienced very little drama there. The tags are dense with idiots, but if you find a few sane LOK tumblrs to follow, it's a lot of fun.

For every moron I saw calling Asami suspicious or a slut, I saw 2 or 3 people saying the opposite. Maybe I'm just really good at sensing wank and bad attitudes and automatically scrolling past to get to the good stuff?

I knew that last episode was going to cause massive wank. Which is a shame because I thought the writers did a pretty good job of making everyone involved seem sympathetic. (Okay, I still wonder if Asami is Up To Something, but it's just idle speculation, not raging character hatred.) I don't get being so committed to shipping that you (general you) have to hate on any character you feel threatens your ship.

The show has a very good promise but the fandom is dumber than Naruto and this totally turned me off. Because of the fandom wank in Tumblr I haven't seen the 5. episode yet and I'm planning to just skip that episode.
Also the reason for wank is generally because of the official blogs and Nicks premiers, I just wish it was more than shipping.

Is there any community without shipping wank? I'm open to recs. I want to have fun in a new fandom.

Yeah Mako is not Zuko and it's annoying people seem to think he should act like him too much.

You know it's odd, but while Mako has the ingredients of an interesting character and I can tell the writers are trying their best with him.... I don't really care much for Mako at all. I honestly would only be upset if he died for BOLIN'S sake, and Korra's I guess.

IDK, I guess while I don't hate him I just like every other character more than him- Amon creeps me out- but at least he makes me -feel- something. Also Tenzin and Korra's platonic relationship is just a whole lot more interesting and deep then any of the others in the show just yet. Granted it is early days. But still I am getting the feeling any episode without Tenzin will not be a good one, not really.

I guess I like Asami more because I'm perhaps ANTICIPATING that what they'll do with her character will possibly be interesting? But with Mako... they're already trying and he just isn't to me. I don't care about him at all as a character in of himself. I'd rather hit the night on the town in Republic city with any other character, yes including the airbending kids, because while I'd probably be stressed as hell, it would still at least be interesting and not boring as all hell.

I've kind of only felt my beginnings into really liking him when he's with Asami doing rediculous couply stuff- he feels a bit more dimensional and human with it. Otherwise Mako feels like this weird miss mash of a character they are trying desperately to make cool but just... falls flat to me.

I kind of prefer Zuko TBH since I always got the impression he was sort of a bit of both a mockery as well as (oddly) homage to 'brooding' characters. His brooding is rediculous (as highlighted with the awesomeness of Iroh and how much he fails), he's not a badass, he's also a dork with girls, but his past is also something to take seriously and you felt you could take seriously eventually. Iroh was important in this and highlighted how rediculous Zuko acted, but eventually this ridiculousness became understandable it that makes sense.

I mean initially Zuko seems a bit of a joke but with The Storm and The Blue Spirit he became so MUCH MORE and it highlighted the fact that Aang and Zuko would be friends eventually. He's still a dork and utterly FAILS at being a badass for a long time (not counting the Blue Spirit itself) but it's almost something that could be said with Sokka to a certain extent- kind of comic relief initially but organically becomes something more. Granted ATLA had a lot more time to do this.

But Mako seems like a bad cliche so far, a cliche I though Zuko did a better job with in representing. Another reason apart from being a firebender/fangirls fantasy he's compared and believed to have to act exactly like him? Granted I don't WANT Mako to be Zuko 2.0 either (and he isn't) but perhaps it's another reason why Zuko is a more successful and tolerable version of the brooding character, initially because of comedy purposes, and eventually because of a combination of both comedy and actual depth. Mako just has very little which makes him genuinely fun to watch. He's a bit like FANDOM!Zuko I guess in some ways (which is about as accurate as some of Fandom!Draco to the real deal) so maybe that's why he's not really geling with me?

Am I the only one that doesn't mind the fandom? I mean yeah it's stupid, but it's productive too, lots of lovely fanart and other stuff to look forward to each day. And idk I don't find the stupidity offensive at all , it's just kids having some fun, making metaphorical bunkers with the sign "no other shippers allowed" , having a 'team' and an 'enemy' what makes lots of things more engaging. Just my two cents on that issue.

Back on topic, I hate the Mako = Zuko 2.0 thought. They are nothing alike, like at all. Apart from being firebenders and having a shitty childhood. That's it. Their personalities are different like day and night. The same goes for Korra. She nothing like Katara and, shippers, get the thought that she is out of your head. Having said that, I love both Mako and Korra extensively, they don't need to be a copy of some other character, they do their own thing very well.

Oh did I mention that Makkora is in no way like a Zutara 2.0 too? Heck, I shipped Zutara back in the day (yeah, I did, came at me bro) and loved the fact that for the most part of the series they hated each other and only by the end did they became friends, I mean that's how you write an appealing romance, almost every rom com has nailed that formula. I don't even mind that it's not cannon, I just loved the 'oh I can't stand you, but now I feel like I love you' trope, it was great character development. Unlike Makkora, which was proclaimed cannon in the firs few episodes and added nothing interesting to the characters.
