I personally always considered 'first world problems' to refer to things that are extremely petty or easily fixed by the complainer that are whined about anyway. (e.g. 'I have to plug in my laptop but the power cable's in my ROOM!')

If it's used for anything beyond that, well, that makes me very sad. :I

[identity profile] piratesswoop.livejournal.com 2012-05-13 10:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, exactly, its trivial stuff that people act like is the end of the world. I saw a girl tweet the other day "ugh, dropped my iphone in the toilet, now i have to use my blackberry until my dad gets home from his business trip"

like.....wow

(Anonymous) 2012-05-13 11:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Back before the SJW crowd went nuts, that was just called "whining like a spoiled brat."

+1000

(Anonymous) 2012-05-13 11:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, that's what I've always taken 'first world problems' to mean too. But the 'white people problems' comments are extremely condescending and quite frankly, racist. Though tbh, over half of SJW comments tend to be offensive and insensitive even to those they claim to be defending, so...

(Anonymous) 2012-05-14 04:47 am (UTC)(link)
I'm shocked that no one has informed you of the "academic" definition of racism yet.

(Anonymous) 2012-05-14 06:20 am (UTC)(link)
Nah, I'm pretty sure anon's comment is pointing out that it's racist and condescending to assume that POCs don't have common, everyday problems too. So it still fits within the "academic" parameters.

(Anonymous) 2012-05-14 03:57 pm (UTC)(link)
you noticed that, too? i think they feel like they have every right to be hypocritical, insensitive bullies because they're doing it for ~righteous~ reasons. like they're the defendors of all things oppressed, and this gives them the explicit right to bully other people because they think that person may have bullied someone else.

because being a dick to someone for being a dick to someone else means you AREN'T a dick, somehow, as long as you're ~fighting for justice~.

[identity profile] laurus-nobilis.livejournal.com 2012-05-14 12:19 am (UTC)(link)
... but that's also condescending, because of what [livejournal.com profile] uncieloazul explained above. People in third world countries have petty, easily fixed problems too, you know.

[identity profile] dragon-infusion.livejournal.com 2012-05-14 12:56 am (UTC)(link)
I'm sure that they do. However, I also think you have to think of 'First World problems' in context. These are people who have very few to no serious problems in their lives making a huge deal out of something that is ultimately trivial.

It's not a bad thing to have a bitch here and there, not at all. I personally assign the concept to that branch of people who have everything on a silver platter and then complain the platter isn't gold. Those kind of people need a dose of condescending.

[identity profile] laurus-nobilis.livejournal.com 2012-05-14 01:51 am (UTC)(link)
I understand that. But there are so many different terms to use - minor problems, petty problems, not!problems, whatever.

Calling them "first world" problems isn't only condescending to the people who complain about it. It's condescending to people from third world countries, too. It implies that we don't have that kind of problems, and that's actually pretty insulting.

[identity profile] dragon-infusion.livejournal.com 2012-05-14 02:07 am (UTC)(link)
I tend to just call them shit spewing entitled little shits, because that's what they are. And honestly, I don't care if it's condescending to tell them to get over their 'problems', because these are the kind of people who need a smack of reality.

I can't really speak about the third world country issues as I'm not in a position to understand it, so let's just say that I just don't like whiny attention-seeking brats and that's what I associate the phrase with.

[identity profile] laurus-nobilis.livejournal.com 2012-05-14 02:09 am (UTC)(link)
... you seem to be under the impression that I'm defending the people who complain about petty things. That's not what I'm trying to say here.

What I mean is that, as someone from a third world country, I find the way "first world problems" is used a lot more insulting than the original complaining.

[identity profile] dragon-infusion.livejournal.com 2012-05-14 02:16 am (UTC)(link)
Ah, I think I misread your previous comment. Sorry!

Okay, that makes more sense. Like I said, I'm not really in a position to decide whether it is or not, so I'll bow to you. I just deal with a lot of entitled whiny people atm and sort of drives me up the wall. Living in a First World country it's always felt like an apt phrase. I don't think I'll use it anymore.

Whiny entitled shit sounds better anyway.

[identity profile] laurus-nobilis.livejournal.com 2012-05-14 02:18 am (UTC)(link)
No problem! Glad we understand each other. =)

To be fair, I know most people who use the term don't mean it that way and probably haven't thought about this.

[identity profile] dragon-infusion.livejournal.com 2012-05-14 02:20 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I certainly hadn't. It's difficult to think about things from a perspective you don't share. I do my best but it's bloody hard.

[identity profile] urplesquirrel.livejournal.com 2012-05-14 05:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah. I use the "first world problems" meme to make fun of myself. "I hate it when the soy sauce spills all over my sushi delivery. #firstworldproblems" or "The mini-mart was out of Arizona peach tea - I had to get pink lemonade. #firstworldproblems". It points out how tiny of a problem it is, and still lets you complain a little bit about your minor life annoyances.

(Anonymous) 2012-05-16 05:36 pm (UTC)(link)
You think we don't have sushi delivery in the third world or something? I assure you, little one, we do not all live in shacks waiting for UNICEF packages, and we don't have to be filthy stinking rich child smugglers or drug lords to be ticked off that there's no Arizona peach tea in the market out here either. Your problems are petty, but they're not unique to you.

[identity profile] urplesquirrel.livejournal.com 2012-05-16 06:05 pm (UTC)(link)
*not sure if serious or just joking*
