And the unforgiveable change of giving his origin story to Littlefinger instead of the Hound himself. GAH.

Okay, I'm gonna argue that point. Who the hell goes up to an 11-year-old kid and is like "Did you like the tournament? That's nice. Wanna know how I got these scars? My brother was... a drinker. And a fiend. And one night he goes off crazier than usual..." and then threatens to kill the kid if they tell anyone?

Creepster Littlefinger telling her, because that's the kinda guy he is, as well as she's Replacement!Goldfish Cat and they used to tell each other secrets... that seems to work a little better.

Sandor as less of an angry drunk and more as a deadpan snarker who seems to have a constant "Why is everyone around me so damn murder-crazy" loop playing in his head is more fun.

I also think that the show wanted to establish a connection between Littlefinger and Sansa since that will be important later.

Here's how that was a mistake.

Littlefinger, if they follow the books, won't meet Sansa until the end of the fourth season.

Sandor, however, is important to Sansa right now.

Cutting out the beginning of a subplot that happens in the second season to make room for something at the end of the fourth is a bad decision.

The showrunners (unfortunately) pretty clearly prioritize plot over characterization. Sandor might be important to Sansa as a CHARACTER right now, but he is not super plot significant whereas Littlefinger's relationship with Sansa is super significant to the plot.

Sansa doesn't need Sandor's dialogues in order to establish that her character is getting her dreams shat on. Her Father was beheaded in front of her and she's getting smacked around by Joffrey. She's learning the things that Sandor tells her in the books, regardless of whether he talks to her on the TV show. Her character develops nonetheless.

Speeding up Littlefinger's revelation as a incredibly devious scheming bastard who's causing untold levels of disturbance in everything for the Shakespearean "Sport and Profit" of it all, is more important to a TV audience, because they're going to want that character established more quickly.

More is gained from Sandor telling Sansa his story than Littlefinger. That's why GRRM intended it that way. The audience already knows who Littlefinger is, more than enough.

Exactly. Of all characters, Littlefinger is the last that we need to see more of.

GRRM has the luxury of dragging shit out for pages at a time and focusing on random bits of exposition.

D&D do not because they have to condense everything for television.

Sandor/Sansa is far less significant a relationship in the greater scheme of things than Littlefinger/Sansa.

SanSan fans can argue against that til they're blue in the face, it doesn't change anything.
