I suspect this was posted by the person seeding SanSan secrets with the intention of making us hate that ship (that's my theory and I'm sticking with it), but whatever.

I just need to vent that I hate the way the show is neglecting to develop his character. I'm not even talking about his relationship with Sansa, I mean letting the audience get to know the character as he was in the book -- one of the greatest fighters in the land, always drunk, very cynical, possessing a dark sense of humor that would make him laugh, oddly kind to animals (and Sansa, fine), obstinately loyal, and full of soul-consuming hate for his brother. The character in the books is *interesting*, is what I'm saying. The character in the TV series is a cypher. It's not the actor's fault, either, it's the fact that the show has omitted all the many conversations he's had with Sansa in which we get to know him. And the unforgiveable change of giving his origin story to Littlefinger instead of the Hound himself. GAH.

I think they're just ignoring him until the events of book three. I think they figure they don't NEED to develop him until then.

Woe to them if his interactions with Sansa end up important one way or another, though.

Someone said GRRM was annoyed they'd been cutting him. Is this true?

(Anonymous) 2012-05-13 08:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Not in so many words, but he did express that he was impressed with one actor's audition and was sad to see that the scene didn't make it into the show. Sandor's scene with Sansa is the only scene that fits the description.

(Anonymous) 2012-05-13 08:44 pm (UTC)(link)
The person who claimed to be responsible for the Sansan secrets said they stopped submitting them a while ago. People just like Sandor.

(Anonymous) 2012-05-13 09:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Still mad they cut out Stranger. My favorite part about the mob scene was Sandor being worried about his horse. 'If anything happened to that horse...' It was such a small thing, but it said so much about his character.

Heh, it was pretty funny. I mean, I kinda like that they've made him a nicer person in the TV series, but why'd they have to cut that bit?

(Anonymous) 2012-05-14 12:14 am (UTC)(link)
They seem to have cut out most of the horses period. Probably because of what happened in Luck.

And the unforgiveable change of giving his origin story to Littlefinger instead of the Hound himself. GAH.

Okay, I'm gonna argue that point. Who the hell goes up to an 11-year-old kid and is like "Did you like the tournament? That's nice. Wanna know how I got these scars? My brother was... a drinker. And a fiend. And one night he goes off crazier than usual..." and then threatens to kill the kid if they tell anyone?

Creepster Littlefinger telling her, because that's the kinda guy he is, as well as she's Replacement!Goldfish Cat and they used to tell each other secrets... that seems to work a little better.

Sandor as less of an angry drunk and more as a deadpan snarker who seems to have a constant "Why is everyone around me so damn murder-crazy" loop playing in his head is more fun.

[identity profile] fauxkaren.livejournal.com 2012-05-13 10:57 pm (UTC)(link)
I also think that the show wanted to establish a connection between Littlefinger and Sansa since that will be important later.

(Anonymous) 2012-05-14 12:26 am (UTC)(link)
Here's how that was a mistake.

Littlefinger, if they follow the books, won't meet Sansa until the end of the fourth season.

Sandor, however, is important to Sansa right now.

Cutting out the beginning of a subplot that happens in the second season to make room for something at the end of the fourth is a bad decision.

[identity profile] fauxkaren.livejournal.com 2012-05-14 12:29 am (UTC)(link)
The showrunners (unfortunately) pretty clearly prioritize plot over characterization. Sandor might be important to Sansa as a CHARACTER right now, but he is not super plot significant whereas Littlefinger's relationship with Sansa is super significant to the plot.

[identity profile] visp.livejournal.com 2012-05-14 12:51 am (UTC)(link)
Sansa doesn't need Sandor's dialogues in order to establish that her character is getting her dreams shat on. Her Father was beheaded in front of her and she's getting smacked around by Joffrey. She's learning the things that Sandor tells her in the books, regardless of whether he talks to her on the TV show. Her character develops nonetheless.

Speeding up Littlefinger's revelation as a incredibly devious scheming bastard who's causing untold levels of disturbance in everything for the Shakespearean "Sport and Profit" of it all, is more important to a TV audience, because they're going to want that character established more quickly.

(Anonymous) 2012-05-14 01:03 am (UTC)(link)
More is gained from Sandor telling Sansa his story than Littlefinger. That's why GRRM intended it that way. The audience already knows who Littlefinger is, more than enough.

(Anonymous) 2012-05-14 01:25 am (UTC)(link)
Exactly. Of all characters, Littlefinger is the last that we need to see more of.

GRRM has the luxury of dragging shit out for pages at a time and focusing on random bits of exposition.

D&D do not because they have to condense everything for television.

Sandor/Sansa is far less significant a relationship in the greater scheme of things than Littlefinger/Sansa.

SanSan fans can argue against that til they're blue in the face, it doesn't change anything.

(Anonymous) 2012-05-14 02:18 am (UTC)(link)
But Ros neeeded screentime! How can you expect the Hound to get screentime when there are boobies to be shown!

More seriously, a friend of mine asked me why Sandor called Sansa 'Little Bird' when she's taller than pretty much everyone around her. I think that perfectly symbolized how the showrunners are neglecting important character interactions. They included the nickname, but didn't bother to include how it came about and what it signifies. That's all pretty big stuff.

AYRT

I haven't seen the show that aired tonight (Tivoed it for tomorrow), but my fear is that they'll cut the "sing for me little bird" scene because now it wouldn't make sense at all, and I *love* that scene. I love that he cries when she sings that hymn for him. That says so much about his character (and I love that that was the song she instinctively chose to sing -- that said a lot about her too).

And I'm not even really a shipper! I don't see how they could possibly have a satisfying relationship. But I did enjoy their interactions in the books.

(If you've seen the episode tonight, you can reply to say that scene was or wasn't in the show -- I don't mind spoilers.)

Was not included in the episode. :( I liked that part too.

[identity profile] flowrs4ophelia.livejournal.com 2012-05-14 05:51 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I think what actually disappoints me the most about them taking out the scene between them after the tournamet is that it meant never planting the origin of the "little bird" thing and the actual explanation of that metaphor. The only thing that gave it any kind of meaning in that episode was that later he said "Someone take her back to her cage."

I was happy that the name actually came up for once because at this point all the SanSan stuff has been so neglected that just getting that much seems like a lot, but introducing it that way gives it none of the significance it's supposed to have, especially since he first calls her that in a mocking way before it starts to seem more like a term of endearment.

I suspect this was posted by the person seeding SanSan secrets with the intention of making us hate that ship (that's my theory and I'm sticking with it), but whatever.

Ok, that person already confessed that no, they were just a regular SanSan troll. Thinking about it, though, no, I don't think this one is.

That person had a very distinct style to them. Most of the time they were stalking the more outspoken anti-SanSan board members in comments or posting weird targeted or impersonating secrets that didn't make much sense, but when they would spam the board with a ton of pro SanSan secrets they would basically just be variations of 3 different arguments that they felt proved SanSan's validity, or whatever, re-worded half a dozen ways. The similarity of it all was what made it so annoying. It was like "we know, you posted the same damn thing yesterday."

This one isn't targeted at any board members or a pro SanSan argument just with a "S!B people don't like this ship" tacked on the end. This is a garden-variety "I'd hit it." I think it's another person just honestly posting that they think he's hot.

(Anonymous) 2012-05-14 05:35 am (UTC)(link)
How would one go about proving who they are? Since they're all submitted anonymously? They could lie either way.
ext_74116: (Default)

[identity profile] visp.livejournal.com 2012-05-14 06:23 pm (UTC)(link)
True. Although, in my observation, people never get worked up enough over a ship they hate to go through all that effort. The only time that happens is when that ship is interfering with their own ship (see: Aang/Katara or Ron/Hermione, Winchester actors/ their wives)

And I just don't see any of the Littlefinger/Sansa or Sandor/Mary Sue sorts being up for it. Certain ships attract the crazy, but not those two, I think.

Why yes, I am having fun playing armchair detective in this mess.

(Anonymous) 2012-05-16 06:55 am (UTC)(link)
I'm pleasantly surprised at how not-crazy and dignified the LF/Sansa fans are.

I intend to stay firmly ensconced in that corner of fandom despite all the "OMG SO SICK AND WRONG"

(yeah, i know it is, i suspect i like it because i like my ships to have mental problems)

[identity profile] visp.livejournal.com 2012-05-16 04:57 pm (UTC)(link)
*nods* I don't ship LF/Sansa, but I have to admit that their fandom is very "yeah, it's messed up, but at least we admit it, and don't try to pretend like it's twu wuv, or make a lot of really shitty fanart." They're very chill.

(Anonymous) 2012-05-14 09:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Pretty sure the guy said he just liked riling people up and finding silly fan arts to post.
