Heh, I'm the opposite, I measure in lipstick (and other makeup and skincare, I don't like lipsticks, tbh). That could buy me 2 lipglasses/that's worth a guerlain quad! Makeup usually wins in these comparisons.

[identity profile] velvet-mace.livejournal.com 2012-05-16 11:34 pm (UTC)(link)
For me it's "three manga would pay the utility bill this month" and "10 bucks for basically a chapter in a WIP? This is a rich person's hobby."

Which is one major reason I moved out of the anime/manga fandom and into live action TV. Budgets are a bitch.

OP Here:

In my own defense, I'm not rich, I just spend the majority of my extra money on books, including manga. I don't buy (new) clothes, don't buy makeup, don't have cable, don't go out to eat or to the movies (except maybe once a year), don't collect much else, etc.

(It generally helps me save money that I don't have much of a social life, and I like it that way.)

I do that but what I compare things to is usually what I want at that time, like video games or manga/comics or art supplies.

(Anonymous) 2012-05-16 11:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Manga is like $10 a pop.
Where the fuck are you buying lipstick that's $25?
That's ridiculous.

I used to do that when I read manga! Since it was almost always $10 it was a good measure of how much I wanted something, I think.

[identity profile] kimchiburger.livejournal.com 2012-05-16 11:51 pm (UTC)(link)
I do that with video games and consoles... except I don't actually buy them.

"That make up kit is $500? I could have bought a PS3 for that!"

[identity profile] wentwarth.livejournal.com 2012-05-17 12:05 am (UTC)(link)
I love looking at big manga collections, but mine will probably never be great. Manga loses when weighed against other things for me, because it's a luxury and it's so expensive — at least the titles I want to own. Like, some volumes of Monster are out of print in English and cost around $30-$60 second-hand... Same with Kaoru Mori's Emma. I really hope that Yen Press picks that last one up eventually, because I could maybe save up for it if it was $10-$15 per volume, but as it is, it's out of the question.

Echoing the anon above - my only thought was about the expensive lipstick.
Amazon says that manga is about 6 to 12 quid in UK (cheapest), so the lipstick would be from 15 to 30? The most expensive one I could find in Boots was Dior for 26. The popular ones such as Maybelline and whatnot would be from 5 to 10ish. Yes, nitpicking :P !

I used to do that. Now it's more like "How many Die Ärzte albums would that get me on iTunes."

(I still love manga but damn they are too expensive for me to invest in a whole series these days.)

I do this too, sometimes, albeit not with manga and makeup.

One of my big motivations to make my own lunches to bring from home is thinking about how many books and DVDs I could buy instead of getting sandwiches from Subway.

[identity profile] kyogres.livejournal.com 2012-05-17 02:43 am (UTC)(link)
I used to do the same thing, except with video games instead of books. "I could go see a movie... or I could save the money because that pays for 1/3 of a video game." "I could eat lunch every day at my school's overpriced cafeteria... or I could skip it for a month and buy a video game instead." "I could buy two pairs of jeans, because my current jeans are getting a bit tight... or I could buy the new Final Fantasy." etc

Of course, now that new games consistently cost $50-$60 each instead of $30-$40 each, it's become a bit less useful.

I used to do that back in high school and early college when I had an allowance/left over scholarship monies.

But I kind of....stopped looking through manga after awhile. Most of it these days don't grab my attention (unless anyone knows of any new manga series in the vein of W Juliet and Hana Kimi? >_>)

Also...note to self. Need to start reading/watching Kimi ni Todoke again.

[identity profile] discord.livejournal.com 2012-05-17 03:05 am (UTC)(link)
I used to do this for books.

[identity profile] megalomaniageek.livejournal.com 2012-05-17 03:25 am (UTC)(link)
My mental economic heuristics are similar, but mine also factors in other things (for example price of food based on type of eatery, price of a month's rent, etc). The things I don't keep track of (like makeup and clothes) always catch me off guard with how expensive they are in comparison.

[identity profile] lone-defender.livejournal.com 2012-05-17 04:28 am (UTC)(link)
I do that but with like...food and LJ subscriptions. "I could get five McDoubles/a QP meal for that, why the hell would I buy a tube of lipstick I'll barely use for that price?" Perspective. It's great for not buying things.

I generally use this justification to choose against manga. i.e. One 55 page manga for $15 (so about 30mins entertainment) versus $30 for a months internet.

Or a show box set for $45 (4hours+ entertainment) vs 8 books for $45 second hand for about 4 hours each vs pet food for a month

etc etc there's always exceptions and sometimes I do really want something that i ignore the "value", but I'm always comparing things, especially entertainment, values against each other and estimated entertainment value.
but sometimes I just want a new copy of a book or something

(Anonymous) 2012-05-17 07:19 am (UTC)(link)
That's awesome OP. Manga is a precious commodity.

Sort of unrelated, but I wish I were confident enough to openly display my manga like that. I still hide a lot of it. /soashamed

(Anonymous) 2012-05-17 10:17 am (UTC)(link)
I love both manga and make-up, but I usually buy the cheaper make-up. I completely understand why someone would pay so much for a lipstick, because obviously this someone is very passionate about good paint (and IMO make up is a form of art).
But I haven't bought English translated manga in years, it's too expensive. Usually I just buy manga in big sets by ordering them straight from Japan (much, much cheaper) and reading scans online of them if my language skills fail me. This way, I can support the artists without paying myself sick and my manga collection gets to grow nicely. If there's something I absolutely have to have that's been translated into English, or any other language I understand, I buy it second-hand. Sorry official translators! I'm not paying your bills, but please don't hate me.

...I do the same thing with Yu-Gi-Oh! cards. Not even gonna lie

[identity profile] miezen.livejournal.com 2012-05-17 02:18 pm (UTC)(link)
I used to do that. Then my interests diversified more. Now I budget my manga purchases in line with my makeup, body care products, doujinshi, figures, DVDs, books, video games, etc. Lately I've been buying less manga and anime because I have a huge backlog.

(Anonymous) 2012-05-17 09:32 pm (UTC)(link)
I do the same thing with video games

I do that with lolita.

Although the reason I quit buying US comics was that I would throw down $50 and be done reading before the bus got to my stop. Whereas with manga magazines you get a huge book with lots of continuing stories for what at that time was about $6.

[identity profile] tee2.livejournal.com 2012-05-19 09:55 am (UTC)(link)
I used to do the same! It was a great way for me to save money, especially after I discovered the existence of Bookoff stores (Used manga for a dollar each? Hard to want to spend money on candy after that..!)

Anyway, the comparison method is a good way to stay thrifty, or at least to measure your priorities and measure the worth of things before you make a move. So, good on you!
