The word's ragicomic.

And maybe your mom cares more about Pottermore than she lets on (and maybe she won't join because she's afraid she won't be sorted into the House of her choosing).

*tragicomic, not ragicomic

Oh I dunno, I think "ragicomic" is a pretty good description too ;)

I think that's cute. As long as she doesn't get you out of the legacy for it.

Okay, as an aside, was anyone else disappointed with the Gryffindor welcome message? (I got Sorted to Hufflepuff, but I was curious so I did some googling.) I mean, I get that we've got seven books worth of Gryffindor and all, but three paragraphs from Percy Weasley? Seriously? All the other House welcome messages go on and on about all kinds of fun trivia, and then there's...three measly paragraphs.

I think the Pottermore people really missed a trick with that one.

But all the trivia there was for the other houses, we had already gotten for Gryffindor. It wasn't that we had so much information about it from the books, it's that the info on the other houses was info we already had.

To paraphrase what someone else said, it was like everyone already assumed Gryffindor was the best house and everyone else had to get like condolence fluffing.

I was disappointed with getting into Gryffindor, period. :/ I wanted to be in Hufflepuff, and failing that I wouldn't have minded Slytherin or Ravenclaw. If I knew how to beat the sorting test I'd create another account just so I could change houses. *grumble*

SO DISAPPOINTED. More even than my sister choosing Slytherin over Hufflepuff! (I kid I kid her choice is the most disappointing [okay no I'm just jealous she got the choice between the two but I was apparently a shoe-in for the bravery house]) I Googled the other House messages as soon as I could after I read Slytherin's over my sister's shoulder and it was a glorious tl;dr info dump. WHY, ROWLING, WHY :(

Also I was disappointed in getting Gryffindor for reasons of 'but Gryffindor is, like, default for Sues! Boooo!'. I was expecting and hoping for Ravenclaw, but oh well I guess Gryffindor isn't too awful.

[identity profile] broadwaybabe11.livejournal.com 2012-06-07 04:39 am (UTC)(link)
yeah.
I tried twice out of curiosity and got Gryffindor and was really surprised by the welcome message. I was in Slytherin the first time, and our welcome message was pretty awesome.

That analogy is so apt, although obviously Yale is lesser.

If your mom deeply identified herself and her family with Ravenclaw, then I could see that reaction happening. That's not really surprising. Were you happy with it?

(Anonymous) 2012-06-02 11:23 pm (UTC)(link)
OP Here:

I was really surprised and feel not worthy in a Neville Longbottom sort of way, but GRYFFINDOR, WOOT!

My Mom's reaction was a little like, "But my baby is so smart, how did she end up there?"

Still the OP HOLY CRAP LOOK WE HAVE SUBJECT LINES!!

I always thought of myself as a Ravenclaw...but I ended up in Gryffindor. Wasn't too happy. D:

(Anonymous) 2012-06-02 09:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Ditto, Anon. In fact, of all the houses, Gryffindor is the one I felt least likely to get into/identified with. I don't think I would have played long regardless, but that was the nail in the coffin.

I always thought of myself as a Slytherin, and I got into Gryffindor. Part of me wonders if Gryffindor is the default.

My mom gets all passive-aggressive and freaky if I dare like a fabric pattern she doesn't so, understand where you're coming from with the co-dependent guilt.

I feel like Ravenclaw would be the best fit, but I got Gryffindor, too. I think I would have preferred any of the other houses, to be honest. Nothing against Gryffindor, but it was such a big focus of the books, and played up so much, that it would have been fun to get something different.

But I strongly suspect the house assignments are mostly random.

Anyway, this secret made me think of how much fun I used to have playing computer games with my mom. She would always get hilariously mad at the games when things didn't go her way. I enjoy playing crossword puzzles with her now for the same reason. She always ends up talking about how stupid the clues are.

[personal profile] maverickz3r0 2012-06-02 11:05 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't think the assignments are random, actually! There's too much difference in the numbers between the houses for it to be random, because if it was completely random then there'd at least be closer to 25% of the population in each House. As it is, there's way more Gryffindors than any other House, then Hufflepuff and Slytherin are kind of close in numbers, but Ravenclaw has by far the least.

On the other hand, this suggests the questions on the test are somewhat weighted to Gryffindor/against Ravenclaw. Probably by accident, but well.

[identity profile] threnody.livejournal.com 2012-06-03 07:36 am (UTC)(link)
Pretty sure they're random, as well. Some of the questions are easily house-related, but more than a few are completely fucking arbitrary. I peg myself as a Ravenclaw through and through. First time I got Slytherin, second time I got Hufflepuff. Then I said fuck this, and stuck with the Hufflepuff. It's just a fucking site, and I think it's silly that people accept what the site gives them as 'official'. Just because something is official doesn't mean it's not full of shit, y'know?

I'd offer to trade with you, OP - since every. Single. Time. I've taken that silly 'sorting quiz' I've landed in Ravenclaw - and that was *with* me trying to get anything *but* Ravenclaw. -_-;; /FOREVER A RAVEN

(Anonymous) 2012-06-03 04:10 am (UTC)(link)
I have no idea why but my brain just imagined you stuck in an infinite rave party. WTF?

(Anonymous) 2012-06-03 02:03 am (UTC)(link)
If your mom is seriously dissapointed in you for getting a certain fictional house based on a fictional children's book series then she needs to get a fucking life.

My mum read me the books from when I was little too, but her reaction to me being in Grffindor was basically: "okay whatever, now go do your homework"

[identity profile] broadwaybabe11.livejournal.com 2012-06-07 04:49 am (UTC)(link)
I sadly know a mom who got CLOSER to her daughter because she got sorted into Slytherin.

Ahaha. OP, your mom sounds hysterical! (In a good way!)

IMO there is no shame in being a Gryffindor; hell, I even wanted that house, but somehow I got put into Ravenclaw. Which...is the last thing I'd have expected besides Slytherin, but...*shrugs*

Did you actually enjoy the site beyond the sorting? I was never a HUGE Potter fan myself, so the sorting was the majority of what I was looking forward to, and everything else...well, after a day or two there was no going back.
