Am I the only one who feels weird when they get 'thank you' reviews? I never know how to respond. Saying 'you're welcome' just makes me feel like a smug tool. =/

Same here.
I usually answer "Thanks to you" unless I wrote the fic for the person who say "thank you" first.

No, you're not alone. It always makes me uncomfortable. What am I supposed to say, "you're welcome"? That sounds obnoxious and smug, like you said and also sounds like I think they should be thankful that I posted the fic or something, which is just... Yeah. :/

I generally just respond with an emoticon or a 'glad you like it', though those still don't feel quite right. I'm thankful to anyone who takes the time to leave a comment on my fics, no matter how short or long it may be, but I've always felt uneasy for accepting thanks over something I was going to do anyway. Oh well. A positive response is a positive response, so I should really stop obsessing over this. lol

I've always felt uneasy for accepting thanks over something I was going to do anyway.

That hits the nail on the head.

I usually go the "glad you liked it!" route as well, though when the review was just "thank you" I feel weird about the fact that my reply is longer than the original comment. But I also feel like a tool when I only answer with some variation of "glad you liked it", so it's probably me that's the problem here.

But why should the auther say anything back? I'm talking mainly on ff.net here, not comms like LJ where the status quo can be different. If I leave a long, detailed review then it's cool (although certainly not necessary) if they reply; but if I just say "Hey, cool fic! Thanks for sharing it!" I'm certainly not expecting anything back.

Mind you, on ff.net at least (where I post pretty much all of my fics these days, mainly to keep them all in one place regardless of fandom) if an author replies it's in a PM so you don't have this endless thread of "Nice Fic!" "Thanks!" "Yeah, nice!" "Thank you!" "I liked it too!" "Thanks!" Heh.

But meh, when I leave a review I never expect a reply (although it's nice if I ask a specific question if I get one) and I have to admit, on ff.net, I usually don't reply to reviews unless a specific question is asked. Even then I can't answer if they don't leave an account for me to PM! But that's a different issue. :-)

I don't know, I kind of feel like I have to? The reviewer took the time to review, so I should take the time and say thanks. And I always feel guilty when I go back a couple of weeks later and see that there was a comment I hadn't replied to. (Which I then don't reply to because I feel stupid answering a comment that was left ages ago on a fic the reviewer most likely won't even remember reading.)

I can see that. Fair enough! :-)

I think that's a good point, about how the expectations can be different depending on where you are. I've never really posted much on ff.net, so when I think of comments, I generally think of LJ/DW and AO3, which is where I post. And I do reply to all my reviews on those sites. But yeah, it seems like a different commenting structure on ff.net, and it's always seemed to me that it's very common not to reply to reviews there. I doubt I would, to be honest.

When I was posting fic regularly on LJ comms I absolutely would try to respond to every comment (although I have to admit, sometimes it feels like padding the comment count when I do so lol), because there it just felt rude to leave the comment hanging. But on ff.net it does seem to be done differently, and the few times I've had an author reply to "Nice fic!" there felt a little odd. But certainly I didn't resent it either.

See, this is one of the reasons I don't usually leave comments. I feel awkward talking to someone I know will probably never respond. If it just sits there for a really long time I start thinking "Oh no, did they think I was looking for attention? What if I sounded like an idiot?"

I don't use ff.net though, this is mostly on lj/dw/ao3.

I personally feel weird if I don't reply to someone saying they liked it or thanking me.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-02 09:05 pm (UTC)(link)
If it helps, when I leave a reply I'm not expecting an answer. It's more just a notice - saying "hi! I read this and liked it!" - than a dialogue of any kind.

That does help a little, but I'm OCD about replying to complimentary comments. XD I guess I'll just stick with a :), ♥, or 'glad you like it' for now.
