Iiii kind of have this problem. I feel like I either need to leave a long review or not say anything at all, which is kind of dumb, but there you go. I'm trying to get better at leaving reviews on everything, though.

Part of the problem is that there are a lot of authors who have been very vocal about not liking the short replies. I've seen so many fic authors complain about how short replies like that are a waste of time and how couldn't the reader at least think of something to say etc etc etc

So many authors complain and judge reviewers, and it's gotten to the point where I just don't leave reviews. I mean, I have an anxiety disorder anyway so maybe I'm just unusually sensitive.

If I don't leave a review it's because I genuinely don't know what to say beyond "great, loved it" and I feel really lame because authors are always saying they want concrit/comments that actually help them and I feel I can't give it to them.

... Again with that?

I take adds to favourites or watch list as a compliment. A "Thank you!" review might be nice, but it's redundant imo. I appreciate it if I get one, of course.

People know that you'll get a notification if they add your story to a watch or favourite list. So it's not like they're hiding their appreciation.

TBH though I think I remember secrets where some fic writers hate the idea of short comments like that.

And that's before getting into the critique vs 100% positive all the time thing which was kind of a trend a while back.

Sometimes it's like both reviewer and writer can't win without stepping on someone's toes.

Sometimes people feel silly giving small comments- and you get people honestly whining about getting them too. Personally I think even a small comment is great too but eh, even if they don't write one I wouldn't take it personally.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-02 08:40 pm (UTC)(link)
I feel like it makes me ungrateful, but I have to confess I completely agree. It always bugs me when people read my fic(s), and must have enjoyed them since they faved me or tracked me, but couldn't be bothered to comment. XP As a writer, comments make me feel so happy and proud of my work, so I always try to review/comment myself.

some fic comms on LJ have a standardized crit request thing and people who post their fic have an area in the c/pable fic header where they put what level of crit they want for the piece (none/grammar only/harsh crit wanted and so on)

I always found this a good system and don't know why more communities don't use it

(Anonymous) 2012-06-02 08:51 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm a major lurker and I feel terrible. I'm always scared of offending someone or misunderstanding their intention and embarrassing myself. And then after so long if I did leave a comment about one fic I would be consumed with guilt over all the other great fics I never left a comment for.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-02 08:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Would you rather they didn't add you to their watch list or favorite you? Because if you get too annoying about always wanting a review, that's what people will do.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-02 09:00 pm (UTC)(link)
I try to avoid leaving a simple little "I like this!" comment along side a favorite, because I think it's redundant.
Favorites are a form of compliment. I don't understand why people feel a need to nitpick which form of compliment they receive.

Unless you're saying you want both, which I feel is far more "incredibly rude" in its self-entitlement, than simply not giving feedback.
starzki: (FMP: Only one I trust)

[personal profile] starzki 2012-06-02 09:03 pm (UTC)(link)
As a writer on ff.net, I get the frustration that comes with people favoriting, but not reviewing. For me, it's partly because other readers can see how many reviews a story gets, but not how many favorites, and a larger number of reviews might mean that someone else could be lured into reading the story.

While I think that the number of reviews is a terrible way to gauge whether or not a person should read a story, it kind of works. I know I've been guilty of stopping to read a story that is one chapter and has over 20 reviews (in a small fandom), just to find out what everyone else had to say about it and if I agreed.

Personally, knowing that I love reviews for my writing, I make it a point to leave a review whenever I favorite a story because there has to be a reason I want to favorite it and why not share it?

I agree, Anon. Unfortunately, discussions about reviewing usually get a lot of backlash from people who think that authors are entitled if they express a preference for reviews. It always makes me wonder why people so determined NOT to leave a simple "Thanks, I liked your fic!" for fics they enjoy?

*shakes head*

Apparently writers should be pumping out chapters without any hope of feedback and we're horrible ingrates if we don't.

Sometimes I'm really shy about commenting on fic, particularly if there's something kinky or unusual about it. Or it's for a fandom that I'm not really a part of. Or the fic is several years old and I'm only discovering it now for the first time. I don't want to come off as a creeper when I comment, but I do want to love and mem the work.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-02 10:09 pm (UTC)(link)
I prefer reviews over favorites/alerts, because they're less impersonal. It's not just clicking a button for your own convenience, it's also acknowledging the writer behind the story, and even if you only have a few words to say, that means a lot more to me.

I'm very shy, and posting fanfiction is the main way I try to reach out and interact with people in my fandoms. If I only ever got favorites and never reviews, it'd feel lonely and discouraging, and I'm fairly sure I'd stop posting.

I usually favourite something because I need a placeholder until I organise my bookmarks. Which would actually make me extra invisible whoop.

But if I subscribe or watch something, without comment or bookmarking, it's because I'm being tentative and/or passive aggressive; concept might be mega interesting, but I want to see where it goes in case I need to bail from potential suck. Just in case you ever see my name in a notif of yours one day, that's why.

Plus I hate leaving short feedback when I happen to have any. Flailing with happiness is my new years resolution.

I would rather have nothing at all than nothing but a stupid "Thank you." Way to get my hopes up for a totally worthless comment.

maverickz3r0: animated text icon quoted from the book i want to go home by gordon korman (Rudy Miller)

[personal profile] maverickz3r0 2012-06-02 10:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Hi. I lurk.

If I read a story, and like it, I put it on my favourites list. That's exactly the same as posting 'I like it' as a review, except it doesn't give me anxiety about 'oh god, what if they wanted a longer review, does this sound stupid, why did I post that when there's a dozen other people saying the exact same thing, this is dumb.' And in the rare cases where I feel compelled to post a longer review, I go into even more anxiety, of the 'what if they knew this already, what if I'm repeating what other people said, do I quote things I liked or just refer to them, ahhhhh.'

So yeah, me reviewing is a rare thing as it causes my brain to do the equivalent of running rapidly around in circles and then slamming into a wall. I can't imagine I'm the only one like this. Plus I read a ton of stories, if I felt obligated to review every single one like some authors want? Then my brain would be doing this a lot and that would make me read less to avoid it and I love reading, so yeah, that's...not about to happen.

Not that I think just favouriting/alerting is 'rude' either. I much prefer it for the (few) stories I have up, as I'm compelled to somehow respond (with that same anxiety kicking in!) to reviews, whereas them favouriting is just an 'oh, cool, they liked it' and I can go on my merry way. 'I liked it' is, after all, an empty response, you can tap it out in a second too and it doesn't mean anything more than favouriting does.

I can accept that some people might prefer the 'I liked it' comments to favourites even, but some of the reviewers prefer the favourites button to 'I liked it' comments and really, both mean pretty much the same thing, so does it matter?

P.S. Never go over to a fanfic comm, particularly FFR, and complain about lack of reviews. You'll have a hundred people calling you entitled in a hot second.

Personally, I love it when people favorite my stories or put them on alert. I mean, I get really excited when people review, but my stories are posted just in case people might enjoy them. I wrote them for myself, because I got a plot bunny that refused to go away. They're posted because after the third time I read my first story, I started thinking that maybe other people might enjoy it too.

And I do love getting reviews, even though I only have three or four faithful reviewers compared to fifty-one people having put the story on alert. But, I find the alerts just as important as the reviews, in a way. Sometimes when I have writer's block, or I have to force myself to work on my WIP, I remember that I have fifty-one people waiting for update.

Anyway, what I'm trying to say here is that I think any way that readers can tell writers they like a story is equally as valid as other any other way. Readers should not feel obligated to review, even though it is nice when they do so.

I could leave a long comment explain how it is actually really hard for a lot of people to say "thank you" or "I liked that", but I feel like I just did that a month or so ago.

Seriously, read the posts and comments and lose your sense of entitlement.

For some reason, I favourite stories (ff.net mostly) often enough, most of the times as a placeholder/bookmark before I read them, but only actually review if I either REALLY like them, or I REALLY like them and think that there are some things (characterization mostly) that could be improved on. I don't know, there's something about just leaving a couple words that doesn't seem to cut it.
