As a writer on ff.net, I get the frustration that comes with people favoriting, but not reviewing. For me, it's partly because other readers can see how many reviews a story gets, but not how many favorites, and a larger number of reviews might mean that someone else could be lured into reading the story.

While I think that the number of reviews is a terrible way to gauge whether or not a person should read a story, it kind of works. I know I've been guilty of stopping to read a story that is one chapter and has over 20 reviews (in a small fandom), just to find out what everyone else had to say about it and if I agreed.

Personally, knowing that I love reviews for my writing, I make it a point to leave a review whenever I favorite a story because there has to be a reason I want to favorite it and why not share it?

I often read the reviews of a story before actually opening it too, so that I can gauge the general quality before reading it.

This has pretty much been my standard for reviewing the last few years, and its worked quite nicely =) Yeah, it means I don't read as quickly as others might, but I have the chance to really digest it and find something to say about why I liked it. Maybe it helps that I'm also a writer, and therefore understand the sorts of things writers like to hear about their work?

I really agree with this.

The problem with putting something on favorites is no one else can see them, and therefore, it doesn't help others to know if a story is worth reading or not. A story can have dozens of favorites, but if it only has one or two reviews, a lot of people is just going to ignore it.

At least in AO3 you can see how many hits a story has regardless of feedback or not, and I think it would be a nice thing if they put it on FF.net.

Asa reader, checking reviews has helped me find good stories. If only more people realized that...
