Just gonna go ahead and say what everyone is secretly thinking.

As a writer, I want even those stupid short meaningless reviews more than the favorites because the quantity of reviews my fic has gets more attention and attracts more readers.

There. I said it.

As a reader, I don't read the comments first (if at all), I look at the number of hits or kudos a fic has. I know that not every good fic will have praise heaped upon it, but the other things are always a good indicator.

As a writer, I count the number of hits to be way more important. Comments are nice, but knowing people have read it, even years after a story was first posted, is much more satisfying. But then I write for myself, stories I would want to read, not for an audience to get comments.

The trouble with a hit count is that it doesn't tell you if the readers actually liked the fic or not. They could have seen the summary and clicked, then got three paragraphs in and decided it was terrible... ):

And 'kudos' is a new and strange concept for me - maybe because I only ever seem to hear the word IRL in a sarcastic sense, it sort of feels like a 'nice try but no cigar', lol. Sort of... 'I read this, and it's okay, but not good enough for a review'.

I just think it's a nice thing to do to leave a quick comment/review. Most of the faves I get are from people who have like 5000 stories listed as faves, so it doesn't really mean as much as taking the time to put a couple of thoughts into writing in a review.

As a writer, I enjoy the writing process. Any reviews or favorites are just icing on cake.

Do I like reviews and favorites? Of course I do! It's nice know somebody enjoyed my little fics.

If I don't get anything? No biggie. I already had my fun.

As a reader, I know that the quantity of reviews means nothing about the quality of a fic. Mediocre fics with popular pairings/characters/plots will generally get way more reviews than good fics with an less popular ones.

Well, it's certainly not what I'm thinking. I go by the summary. If it sounds interesting, I'll read it. I have never cared how many reviews anything had.

Seriously, I want to know: does anyone read someone else's reviews? Just out of interest.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-03 05:08 pm (UTC)(link)
I tend to scope it out if I'm on the borderline of deciding if I should go ahead and read or not

(Anonymous) 2012-06-03 11:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Like the other anon, if a summary catches my eye, I'll often read the reviews to help decide if I'm going to read a longer story. If it's actual literate reviews (vs. "squee OMG!!!11!"), that seems to reflect better on the quality of writing, and I'm more likely to read. (Note: I'm specifically talking about reading fic at FFNet, where there's a high garbage to good ratio.)

(Anonymous) 2012-06-06 11:39 am (UTC)(link)
Yep. Certainly what I'm thinking.

[personal profile] seekerheart 2012-06-06 10:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah... Plus I just end up sort of embarrassed when I put a lot of work or time into a fic, and dare to post it up and then get no response. I feel sort of... ashamed? It sounds silly, probably, but I end up feeling like I shouldn't have put the work out there to fail/not be good enough u///u
