Can I just say that I'm really fine with whatever the reader feels comfortable with? If you enjoy my fic and I never know you read it, well, I put it out there for people to enjoy, so mission accomplished. If you give me a "like" or a "fave" or track/follow me, I take that as a compliment and am pleased. Of course I'm delighted to get more detailed feedback. An "omg squee!" is lovely and brightens my day. Paragraphs of gushing are of course always appreciated. I mean, who turns away paragraphs of gushing, c'mon. But I'm not entitled to that. My story was a gift. It's nice to know it's appreciated, but how and if you do that is up to you.

What's kind of funny is that I sort of turn the social anxiety on the other end here. I used to think that the way one deals with reviews is simply not to respond, because that just comes off as awkward and needy, and because when people respond to my reviews I'm so overcome with embarrassment I almost regret reviewing them. Then I started seeing people having entitled ragefests over how dare the writers write them a story and not say thank you for comments on it! So now I respond to some and not others, depending on the depth of the comment, my mood that day, how many comments that fic has received, and what platform it's on, as some sites make it a lot easier than others.

In the end, I hope no one feels intimidated about reviewing me, and I hope no one hates me for not replying, and I hope no one feels my replies were awkward and unnecessary, but none of these things are ever going to be completely true. I guess the best we can do is just accept we're all fans and all trying our best and just try to be a little understanding of each other.
