(Anonymous) 2012-06-02 09:23 pm (UTC)(link)I get it. Suspension of disbelief. Explosions and shit. Superhero genre. I still found it made the characters look dumb.

The monsters themselves were destroying most of the buildings, except for when the Hulk (one of the geniuses who wasn't exactly in THAT much control of himself) was doing this smash thing. And Iron Man WAS trying to keep them occupied elsewhere.
Basically, yeah, suspension of disbelief. I just didn't mind it because I kind of expected NYC to get obliterated in the "final battle."

I mean, seriously, would anyone really expect most villains to relocate the fight even if the heroes asked them to? Also, how many times did they try to get Loki to simply STOP and send the Chitauri back from whence they came, only to be ignored? It isn't like they didn't even try other methods of resolving the conflict.

The Avengers and the aliens they were battling looked to the street sign that clearly said "Battle-Free Zone."
"I'm afraid you all are going to have to find a new place to do battle for Earth's fate," the officer insisted.
With a shrug the fighting parties left and went to find some barren wasteland no one cared about and would look much less impressive as a battle scene backdrop.
The End.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-03 04:47 am (UTC)(link)Especially since they showed Cap trying to get civilians off the streets. So, where are they going? They can't be going into the buildings the Avengers are happily destroying.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-03 05:20 am (UTC)(link)But clearly there need to be evacuation protocols in place for when aliens try to enslave the Earth and set about destroying cities. All that panicking was so inefficient.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-03 05:30 am (UTC)(link)It's just kinda jarring to have the Avengers quipping and doing awesome moves or whatever and the immense property damage of places that are either shown or must be assumed to have people inside them being the elephant in the room.

Also, it's kinda jarring to have someone complaining of the Avengers not caring about civilians since there are at least four scenes showing them doing exactly that. It's not until after the police gets involved and starts evacuating people from the buildings when the quips start, and most of them sound to be them just trying to keep moral up since it's five people against an army.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-03 09:56 pm (UTC)(link)Well, the movie does that. Show a scene or two of something and then never bring it up again. It's not that they don't care about civilians, because they're imaginary, I'm not gonna try and deduce what the writers were trying to do with them, just that there's no acknowledgement about what they're destroying -- and since the movie shied away from showing the aliens actually hurting anyone most of the time, it's hard to see that somber 9/11 parallel near the end and not go "so how many people did the heroes kill while they were making jokes and crushing apartments..."
