I think I've seen secrets about multiple people doing this, so I guess it's pretty common? Glad you're happy and participating, though~

Well, fanfic involves a lot of self-gratification in general. I don't see why it's a bad thing if you're removing someones tropes/kinks/quirks/errors and replacing them with your own. :)

I like you. I wish I could do this instead of just loathing people who continually write shitty fic and destroy canon characters.

Y'know, I wouldn't even really be offended if I found out someone was doing that with my fics. I mean, we all see a story (whether canon or fanfiction) from our own unique perspective, and there are always things that we think can be improved about it - and I dunno about other people, but I'm always adjusting or adding things in my head to make stuff in canon make more sense to me, or be less problematic/seemingly OOC/whatever. (In part, that's where fanfic comes from.) Doing that with fanfiction doesn't seem particularly different - I think we're all filtering things through our own lens already.

I don't save and rewrite a fic, but I do replace things in my head as I read. Especially if the author uses annoying epithets like, "The black woman said.." will become "Uhura said...". I wouldn't delete or rewrite whole scenes, but I don't see too much wrong with it as long as you give the author credit for creating the base of something you enjoyed.

that sounds like an elegant solution to my current problem... I have a really difficult time reading through fic with poor grammar or structure, even if the plot is gold or characterization is good, the aforementioned issues take me right out of the story. I think I'll try this.

I tried to do this with a current WIP in one of my current fandoms. It was a kink meme prompt, and I really only liked the first bit that was posted. After that, the writing went downhill, and the author added in story elements (mostly minor) that bugged me. I tried to fix it in a word document, but after going over it with a fine-toothed comb I got frustrated because I kept seeing error after error that I hadn't really given much notice to my first read-through. I eventually gave it up as hopeless and wrote my own story for the prompt in my head. You have far more patience than I do, OP.

I do this, minus the commenting bit. I actually started doing this out of frustration with fic that had plots/ideas that I liked but poor execution, and continued doing it because I realized it was really helping my own writing skills.

Why don't you just offer to beta for them, since you're putting in the work anyway?

Even if they accepted the offer, don't some people take it weirdly personally when you start going against their ~immaculate vision~ for their fic? Even if it's basic things like cleaning up grammar and scene order.

You clearly don't tell the author about it, so I don't see the problem. Enjoy your fic, anon!

(This is actually quite smart imo, but personally I'm too lazy to do it.)

I really like that it inspires you to review the fic later on, since it sounds like you're mostly just fixing the technical aspects so that the basis of the story, the idea behind it, is allowed to shine. I know I've found it hard in the past to ignore awful grammar or punctuation in favor of great characterization or plotting. I might try this sometime.

Sounds like an awesome solution. Your happy, the author is happy; all is good.

Although yeah, I wouldn't tell the author. Some people will go batshit crazy on you for touching their precious baby

I can't say anything. Back when I had a lot of free time for fandom, I used to (mentally--I never took the time to copy it all into a document or anything) rewrite fics that I liked the premise of if they had tons of grammatical errors/poorly developed or implemented plot points/tropes or pairing I really hated/whatever, but nowadays I just close the tab and move on. Now, I rarely read fic at all, so I can usually find at least one new story that fits my tastes in a given fandom from everything that's been completed (I don't do WIPs anymore either, though I used to if I liked the ideas or writing enough) in the six months+ since I last looked.

Please be a beta. Some fandoms are so short of them and often it's hard to find a beta who will stick around.

If you're going to take all that time to edit something, why not leave an HONEST review of the work? Lying to an author and saying their the BEST WRITER EVAH only inflates a newbie's ego and makes it hard for reviewers who offer concrit later. :/

(Anonymous) 2012-06-07 03:03 am (UTC)(link)
It's not rewriting someone else's fic that's weird. Frankly, that's what fanfiction is. Re-writing someone else's material. What IS weird is that you're secretly patting yourself on the back for what you've written, and you're not being honest with the writer. That's dishonest. Have fun with words but don't bullshit the author into thinking that you really liked their material when you actually disliked it to the point of completely rewriting it (and you think it's better) and then complimenting yourself in someone else's journal? Think about this.
