I used to write RPF. Then I met the people I was RPF-ing and I felt weird. Now my view on it is so long as you don't actually believe it's real to a point where you're invading the personal lives and privacy of the real people then it's mostly harmless. I personally just wouldn't write it any more. I wouldn't say I think it's wrong (most of the time) just a bit strange in that it can make some people uncomfortable.

And yet I absolutely cannot handle photomanips for some reason. I get a completely different reaction - it makes me feel dirty looking at them in a way fic doesn't. I know this seems a bit contradictory. I can't explain it.

yeah basically so long as you don't tinhat or believe your ship is actually... real... or start bashing on the person's actual significant others

NO DUDE SAME PHOTOMANIPS ARE THE BANE OF MY EXISTENCE like it's ok if you do it but oh my god if a photomanip pops up while im reading a fic i just back away really quickly and try to... calm down

especially the kind of photomanips that are of a single person pasted+blurred+whatever several times in a picture

i just personally find photomanips aesthetically unappealing unless it's really, really well-done.. and even then, i still cringe whenever i see them used in fic/etc

doesn't bother me enough to make me press backspace though i just question why it's a Thing that happens

Yeah even the ones that are done well make me feel weird. I think because compared to fic where it's all in your head, manips are such a smack in the fact that "actually dudes, these are real people" and if that squicks you a little it's harder to get over when it's so in your face.

And then there are the bad ones that are just laughable. For example, I accidentally saw plenty of manips of David Tennant during his time as The Doctor (by accidentally, I mean I somehow missed the warnings when idly clicking on stuff) But anyway, there's actual shirtless pics of him around - yet people insist on putting his head on a total ripped body that just looks wrong. So I went from being marginally horrified to rolling around on the floor laughing.

unfortunately in the doctor who community photomanips are just a thing that i have to deal with, esp. the bad ones...

MTE. Currently I'm really into One Direction, and a lot of the Louis/Harry shippers make me really embarrassed to admit that I like that pairing, since there are so many tinhatters. A lot of sensible 1D fans will lock their fic to their journals, and while I normally don't like when people make you friend them to read their fics, in this fandom I get why.

Also most photomanips are just horrible on a Photoshop level, even for live-action TV shows and movies, but there is definitely an extra, National Enquirer-esque skeeviness to it with RPF.

Yeah, agreed.

I read exclusively AU rpf so honestly I just think of it as a bunch of original short stories with vague images of the actors in my head and names and character traits that crop up a bunch of times. (Though stories sometimes take various character traits and run with them for the sake of the story, and X as they appear in one fic sometimes seems to be radically different from X in another fic.

That said, manips always leave me feeling weird. It kind of makes it more real in my mind. Plus the vast majority of them are off enough to look super weird.

Agree 100 percent on the photomanips, i just do not like them. That, and most are atrocious. But even the most elegant, perfect manip makes me cringe.
