To you it's wrong, to others it's not. That's how they can like RPF.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-03 07:57 pm (UTC)(link)
It's probably because they're nice, compassionate and kind. RPF is not my thing, but it's not like it hurts anyone, and unless the person in question asked you to stop... what's wrong with it?

(Anonymous) 2012-06-03 07:57 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't understand why nice etc. people don't agree with me about the truths of reality I've realized, either, including why otherwise perfectly nice people will bash RPF fans. At least we can mostly agree that we are all nice.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-03 07:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, it is...in my personal opinion. That's why I don't get involved in RPF.

Since I write in Spanish, I don't mind writing/reading RPF about people like Dan Radcliffe or Fassbender but I tried once to write about Barça's football players and I felt very uncomfortable (especially because it was a slashy orgy).

I think RPF is just absolutely creepy as holy fucking shit.

But I don't know why that has anything to do with a person being nice / kind / compassionate.

The two things aren't mutually exclusive, as far as I'm aware.

RPF squicks me like almost nothing else, but I just cannot see it as fundamentally wrong. Do you also think it's fundamentally wrong to have graphic sexual self-insert fantasies about your favorite celebrities?

I used to write RPF. Then I met the people I was RPF-ing and I felt weird. Now my view on it is so long as you don't actually believe it's real to a point where you're invading the personal lives and privacy of the real people then it's mostly harmless. I personally just wouldn't write it any more. I wouldn't say I think it's wrong (most of the time) just a bit strange in that it can make some people uncomfortable.

And yet I absolutely cannot handle photomanips for some reason. I get a completely different reaction - it makes me feel dirty looking at them in a way fic doesn't. I know this seems a bit contradictory. I can't explain it.

RPF creeps me the hell out. And I'm going to have to agree with you that it sort of is wrong. I mean, I wouldn't want to go on the internet and see some story written about me and someone else having sloppy, animalistic sex. That would just skeeve me out. Not to mention that some RPF fans go a little too far, trying to pry into celebrity lives just so that they can maybe catch a glimpse of their dirty fangirl fantasies. Some people just take it too far and too seriously.

I don't write or read it (although, to be fair that's probably because the actors I kind of ship aren't nearly popular enough to have RPF written about them), but I don't see where it's morally wrong or anything.

I do think it's super creepy when it goes past a certain point, though. I think send the actors fic or manips is crossing a line, and I find it a little unsettling when people become really, genuinely convinced that it's real, but otherwise, I don't think it's a big deal.

I'm not gonna lie, there are two actors that I think have amazing chemistry and are awesome together, but that's as far as it goes because they're both married to other people and have kids. Sure, if they were both single, I think they'd make an adorable couple, but I'm not gonna go looking for evidence of a secret affair or some shit, because that's creepy.

just don't show it to the actual people you'll be fine

same rules apply to anything else in fandom: it's all just for fun

it's ok if it's not your cup of tea, just don't bash others for it

(Anonymous) 2012-06-03 09:02 pm (UTC)(link)
I really don't get how being "nice, kind and compassionate" = a utter dislike or hate of RPF. Based on your secret, I'm guessing that everyone else (on DW, Tumblr, Twitter, DA, IJ, AO3) is extent from being ostracized by you for liking RPF? *shrugs*

Honestly, OP, not everyone is agree with you 100% in any fandom . The sooner you adopt the idea of "live and let live/Your Fandom Is Not My Fandom And That's OK" (instead of the "why won't people agree with my opinions ALL THE TIME"), the happier you'll be.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-03 09:17 pm (UTC)(link)
am I the only one who thinks celebrities generally wouldn't be the type to feel scandalized over how someone on the internet wrote stories featuring their peepee or vajayjay

I can only picture them finding it and at worst going "ahaha that's weird and kind of awkward, o internet" and then getting a bagel or something

I struggle to accept RPF, myself. I've never been able to satisfactorily figure out where the real/fantasy line is, especially when it comes to RPF that isn't also a massive AU. But I've put them in the same category as paparazzi: as something inevitable the Celebrity has to live with. Being treated like an fictional object rather than a living person is part of the job. I imagine most are inured to it, even if they find it unpleasant and embarrassing.

What I really can't understand is people who RPF people that they know and who actually talk and respond to them.

I have as much trouble understanding the squick as other people have understanding why the squick isn't universal.

We all fantasize. People in fandom, especially, prove this to be true. We all (well, most of us) also masturbate. I guarantee that RPF Writer #512465123 is not the first person to masturbate thinking about [whomever.] Why is it suddenly horrible to write whatever fantasy s/he had down?

(Anonymous) 2012-06-03 09:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Because it doesn't hurt anyone? Because in about 90% of cases, the people featured in the RPF aren't going to ever find it? Because if it bothers you so much, you can very easily avoid it?

I'm just recalling the rare cases of celebrities discovering smutty fanfic about themselves. Eli Roth was elated at the Inglorious Basterds fic. Benedict Cumberbatch was flattered and supported it. A whole group of reviewers from the website thatguywiththeglasses.com found the Kink Meme for their site, read some fills in a livestream, and posted requests of their own!

So, yeah ... if it bugs you, ignore it, because it's not hurting you or the celebrities in question. In some cases it's increasing their popularity and fanbase, which is a good thing.

ZZZZZZZZZZZ, this again?

Seriously, I've never written RPF in my life, but the constant harp-harp-harping about how WROOOOOOONG and EEEEEEVIL it is makes me want to start writing it and post it everywhere I can think of, where the anti-RPF complainers will see it, just to get under their sanctimonious skin.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-03 10:24 pm (UTC)(link)
I've had a long, ongoing history regarding my opinions on RPF. I spent years worrying about it, feeling guilty and gross with myself for enjoying it, and even spamming FS with anti-RPF secrets to deal with my own guilt.

Eventually, I decided to just deal with it, and come to terms with the fact that I'll like what I like, and, well....I have to say, I feel a lot better now.

But I DO know where you're coming from. I can still see why it creeps people out.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-03 10:29 pm (UTC)(link)
How do you explain people who actually ship RPF pairings that are "canon", i.e. RDJ and his wife(shame on me for not remembering her name. Sarah?), or Nina Dobrev and Ian Somerhalder, or Jensen Ackles and Danneel Harris?

-shrugs- Personally? I've always taken it kinda like how most people will make comments about ow 'cute' a couple two people will make. Not something that's Uber!serious, and they know that their ship [unless it's like...a couple who is actually together in rl] probably isn't real. [Or that they view the people the same way they do characters /shrugs]

Still, timhatters do, I'll admit, kinda freak me out.

I wouldn't say anything about other people's opinions, but I also think RPF is where a line has been crossed. I know celebrity's lives are often public, but I think even that is wrong.

...RPF is the guiltiest of guilty pleasures for me. I only read Tom Hiddleston RPF because he's like a fictional character in his fantastic-ness himself.
