The level of het stuff very much so depends on your fandom. In almost every fandom I've been in, het is a very small minority, and it's not everywhere.

I'm talking about in general tbh. I couldn't care less about het because I feel like it's been done so many times and I've pretty much seen too much of it already.

What fandoms have you been in, just out of curiosity?

The most notable ones have been Merlin(in the early days), Supernatural, and Sherlock. Others have been exceptions thanks to their sheer massiveness(Stargate and Doctor Who).

Oh lordy, early Merlin fandom had basically nothing but Arthur/Merlin. xD I think the rarepair comm on livejournal continues to define 'rare' as 'not Merthur'. It's... a little better now, I guess? *shrugs*

Yep. I haven't been in fandom in a while, though, so. I left before S3 started, and that was when Merlin/Morgana and Arthur/Gwen really rose in popularity, as far as I know. But in S2, when I got into it, Arthur/Gwen was still really reviled and pretty rare(in the fandom at large; we did have a nice safe comm to hang out in). :/

I'm in an awkward place where I really don't like the way Arthur/Merlin shippers bash Arthur/Gwen... but I also tend to stay away from the Arthur/Gwen fandom. They have some pretty obnoxious things to say about Arthur/Merlin as well and I'm honestly not sure which group offends me more sometimes.

I totally don't blame you. I left fandom because the A/G shippers were getting to be as batshit as some of the A/M ones. I hated to see people bash my bbs, but on the other hand, some of the A/G BNFs were obnoxious as hell and rude pricks towards anything slashy. When they started to drag Lancelot into it all and A/G/L wank overwhelmed even the A/G vs A/M wank, I got the hell out of dodge and moved to greener pastures.

Ayup. I have not heard good things about A/G BNFs. :( Thankfully I've mastered the art of staying away from wank whenever possibly and trying to pretend the fandom is still awesome!

Well, you have my utmost respect for sticking it out. I wanted to go back and just hang out, but by that time S4 was out, and I had too many issues with it to pretend anymore. :/

Well, Arthur/Gwen got kickstarted in S2, and I think it's the second largest pairing now. It's not as big as Merlin/Arthur, but it's got a pretty large following.

It's kind of hard to judge from the Arthur/Merlin side of things because there still seems to be a pretty big divide between the two ships (sadly - I'm an OT3'er and I want more fic plz). But yeah they're definitely the second largest pairing nowadays, it's just that there's still not much variety and almost no femmeslash. :(

Oh I agree - I'm thoroughly sick of the M/A vs A/G ship war. I just meant that there's a lot of Arwen shippers out there. But you're right that there's not a lot of variety, at least in my experience. Arthur/Morgana never really seemed to get off the ground, Morgana/Gwen has kind of died, and Gwen/Lancelot seems to only show up as a secondary pairing in M/A stories - it doesn't seem to have much of a following of its own (sadly). I guess there's a bit of a following for Merlin/Morgana, but beyond that - I think it's all mostly rare pairings territory.

Now I miss Gwen/Morgana. It's still going a little bit but now all the fic etc. is just bucket loads of angst and it makes me sad. :(

Thank you! I mean, I have been in a few fandoms where het was fucking hard to find, but they were mostly for canon sources where the vast majority of major, well-developed characters were male (or, more rarely, female) to start with, and there were still Canon/OC fics hanging about in the corners.

with so many lesbians and bisexual women in fandom, i have to ask why there isn't a ton of this already.
