As someone who writes, reads, and loves m/m slash, I would love to see a huge upsurge in the femslash offerings in fandom (as well as gen and het). The wonderful thing about fandom is that I simultaneously ship John Sheppard with Rodney McKay AND Elizabeth Weir OR nobody at all.

Sounds like a case of unfortunately chosen fandoms to me. Fandoms do exist that are primarily populated with het (or at least have a significant amount) although I haven't seen many fandoms involving mostly gen or femslash. Sounds like just bad luck on your part, really.

I'm a huge slash fan and I wouldn't mind more femslash, honestly. I just hate it when people act like if all slash was gone, there would be more femslah/het/gen. No. There would just be less slash.

For some fandoms, I just want gen, with hints of canon ships (LOST, Fringe, Vampire Diaries), but it's impossible to find. I just want fic in which Caroline has been a vampire for a 100 years! No ships, just her being awesome! Is that so much to ask? :(

I can sympathize. Going into a fandom looking for a good het or femslash fic and finding that it's full to the brim with m/m can be a bit disheartening.

This is how I feel when I go to a library..Searching for some gay romance fiction and realize that its 99% white het romance and no gayness in sight..But I guess that's what I get from reading teen lit.

I love reading shipping fic, but I pretty much only read slash even though I'm not a femslash or het hater. I'm not sure exactly why this is. Maybe I find the male characters more interesting? The slash fic I've read is usually the best quality due to the ability to pick and choose. I do wish there was more femslash and het that I was interested in.

So long as you're not hating on anyone who does it, who actually cares? It's not homophobic when you still ship same-sex, it's just that m/m isn't your cup of tea

if only mainstream media offered more good female characters in lead roles there would be more f/f ships

Yeah, I've always loved how people get accused of being homophobic for wanting more femslash ='|. Because clearly anyone who wants femslash is an icky straight guy!!1

...Nevermind that you're probably a straight girl if you ship m/m [with exceptions of course but the majority of the m/m fanbase is female and straight], and therefore no better.

....I also love how said straight girls cry about how "homophobic" it is how much ecchi anime exists while operating under the assumption that only straight guys watch it. Who's homophobic now? Proooobably the straight yaoi fangirl that is convinced that women like me who like quite a bit of ecchi because I'm attracted to women don't actually exist.

I feel you, OP. I used to ship only m/m for what I think were messed up reasons. Partly I grew out of it, partly fandom has just made me sick of anything m/m. I miss women.

It obviously depends on the fandom, but you probably have a point. I'd definitely like some more gen fics for most of my fandoms. Stories that focus on a particular character or friendship or something like that.

But my biggest slash-related pet peeve is when everyone turns out to be gay. I totally get the urge to pair everyone off, but it's statistically unlikely they'd all be same sex pairings.

I love slash, and some of my favorite non-canon couples are slash, but I'm a gen fan first and foremost, and I am really sick of the fact that it seems like *nothing* with plot and emotion and substance and strong friendships can be written as gen. I like fluffy little gen vignettes, but I wish I could read an epic dramatic fic without any non-canon shipping, whether slash, femslash, or het.

Het and femmslash I feel varies by fandom. Some have a lot of it (usually when there are lots of or very memorable female characters), some don't.

I think it depends on the fandoms you're into, but slash is definitely the majority in all of mine, too. I think it's because they're all male-dominated, and for the most part when there are female characters they're poorly written Mary Sues and I have no desire to ship them with anyone. I do have a few het pairings because there are a few fandoms with interesting female characters, but if I'm lucky enough that there's a well-written woman, I pretty much have no one else to ship her with except a guy, because we just can't have a fandom with two awesome, kickass women. /sarcasm (Of course, I'd happily be proven wrong, I just can't think of any fandoms where there are more than one, if there are any at all, awesome female characters.)

I've always felt like this, anon, though I only recently found a slash pairing I liked. I just hated how fandoms screamed "LOOK AT THE MISOGYNY!" and then turn around and ship nothing but M/M and mock/bash het, femmeslash, and gen. I don't mind that fandom is full of Dean/Cas and Sam/Dean, but I would occasionally like to read Dean/Lisa and Sam/Jess and Anna/Bela, and Dean/Bela and pretty much any pairing that isn't slash. *shrugs* That applies to plenty other fandoms, too.

We all like what we like OP, and that's okay. Nothing wrong with liking variety!

There are definitely fandoms where I ship mostly slash and others where I ship mostly het (and so on and so forth), so I think this is an understandable feeling, but even if there were less slash that doesn't necessarily mean there would be more het/gen/femslash/ace fic, that just means there would be less slash. (And therefore fic in general.) But, I get what you're saying.

Like seriously guys, a lot of major fandoms are het based. Calm yourself, maybe write something to counteract the evil slash you lazy asses.

It really does depend on the fandom and where you're looking. There is a lot of het out there. Not all fandoms are slash-dominated, not even all large fandoms are slash-dominated. Look at BtVS for just one example.

Gen and femslash are rarer I admit. Gen is easier to find in older fandoms I think - at least my experience is that it's harder to find in newer fandoms. Femslash - not an expert. But there are a slowly growing number of fandoms where there's quite a bit of femslash. Myka/HG is the largest pairing in Warehouse 13, Emma/Regina is one of the largest pairings in Once Upon a Time fandom, and then of course Rizzoli & Isles.

I haven't read femmeslash since CSI was big. Mainstream TV shows with adult characters don't seem to have any women that interact enough to merit femmeslash. I dislike Glee so I'm not a Rachel/Quinn shipper (the alternative to Britana or whatever that ship is- I just know my friends talk about both of these).

I want awesome kickass women with guns or lawyering or being doctors or even accounts or circus performers or something. Just doing everyday life things (but being adults) and just happen to be in love. ... Or be close friends on the show so that I can ship them. That'd be cool too. Then there would be fandom.

Totally still bitter about the lack of femmeslash though. Maybe I'm just not watching the right tv shows, but I hate all the vampires and musicals, so I'm sort of off shipping gay men with the straight women in spite of being a lesbian.
Maybe I'm just boring? Or fail at life.
