As others have mentioned, some of it is due to liking shows/movies etc. with more-or-less all-male casts. Some people might really like the dynamic between two dudes. Furthermore, since OCs are often derided (i.e. dismissed as being Mary Sues), if writers want to explore a romantic relationship, they may want to use a character from the show*. Again, depending on the show, this character may be more likely to be a male than a female.

Other than that... there have been several books and essays written on this phenomenon. Can't think of any of the top of my head but a Google search should reveal some of them.



*Not sure how much this contributes tbh... in some fandoms, OCs are very common.
