I'm not even interested in shipping, but I really just can't wrap my head around why so many heterosexual females in fandom are ONLY interested in m/m. Slash is cool, but if you never, ever are interested in other type of pairings then I really can't help but to side eye you. Like... why? What is so special about it? A lot of slash fangirls will claim the love female characters, so why do they show no interest towards them? In Tumblr it seems that 95% of female fans are only interested in hawt white dudes making out. Someone needs to explain me why this happens...

(Anonymous) 2012-06-03 11:31 pm (UTC)(link)
..Why not slash? How do you know that all of them are interested in m/m? Is there a female fanwork quota that should be met to effectively make people believe that you like females? Why is that needed?

Also you need to explore tumblr more if 95% of females are in it for guys making out.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-03 11:35 pm (UTC)(link)
* I mean only interested in m/m.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-03 11:52 pm (UTC)(link)
What's so special about any sexual fantasy that works for you?

If it doesn't work for you, you're not going to wrap your head around it. It's not like some ideological statement. You don't look for deep reasons why a guy always goes for tall women, or women with red hair. You don't interrogate a taste for stilettos, or leather pants. It's hot for somebody, or it isn't.

M/m is just like anything else. A lot of people who aren't you find it really, really hot. Hotter than those other pairings. Which is a thing that has nothing at all to do with liking or loving female characters. You can side eye all you want, it's not going to change anything.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-03 11:52 pm (UTC)(link)
But how do you know that all of them are only interested in m/m? I know a lot of female slashers who have het ships too but they don't actively ship it if you know what I mean. And from what I gathered it's something different and one of those something you can't have kind of thing. Two attractive guys is obviously a plus. You'd rather look at things that you're attracted to won't you? x2. Anyway, this is a huge generalization. Fandom is supposed to be for those guilty pleasure things, not for ~equality~ and social justice. Sometimes I wish people would calm down.

beyond things like just plain personal preference (it happens) and/or internalized misogyny, many times it also has to do with the sort of media someone's fannishly into.

a lot of people are almost exclusively into genre shows and genre shows tend to take "too many dicks on the dancefloor" to extremes.

if your favorite fandoms are, say, SPN, sherlock and star trek, being invested in anything that isn't m/m is kind of tricky.

Or certain genres of anime, for that matter. I mean, when there are only one or two token women on the show (and they're probably minimally developed, to put it nicely), it's no big shock when the fans focus on the dudes.

Heterosexual women interested in male anything is not really surprising tbh.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-04 12:34 am (UTC)(link)
I'm not ONLY interested in m/m, but I do ship more slash pairings than het. At least for me, it's because of the fandoms I'm into, and the lack of interesting or well-written female characters. If there are no female characters at all, or the only ones that exist are poorly-written Mary Sues then there's a good chance I'm gonna ship slash (and of course there are fandoms where I don't ship anything).

I'm gonna take a wild shot in the dark and say it's because straight women are attracted to men and want stuff wherein they're naked together? I mean, personally, I also like it when hot dudes are naked with hot women, but that's just me.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-04 01:05 am (UTC)(link)
So do like 99% of the heterosexual population?

Agreed. Whatever floats your boat, etc.

As others have mentioned, some of it is due to liking shows/movies etc. with more-or-less all-male casts. Some people might really like the dynamic between two dudes. Furthermore, since OCs are often derided (i.e. dismissed as being Mary Sues), if writers want to explore a romantic relationship, they may want to use a character from the show*. Again, depending on the show, this character may be more likely to be a male than a female.

Other than that... there have been several books and essays written on this phenomenon. Can't think of any of the top of my head but a Google search should reveal some of them.

*Not sure how much this contributes tbh... in some fandoms, OCs are very common.

Well, I am a heterosexual female and I like to write and read slash fic (I occasionally read gen and I do read het when I think there's little possibility of it becoming canon (I am sometimes wrong about that)). I feel like most of my het needs are met by the canon of 95% of TV shows, movies, and books, so when I go to fic, I'm usually looking for something else.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-04 07:25 am (UTC)(link)
It's... really not that hard to understand. Straight women are sexually attracted to men, so if one dude is hot, two dudes is even hotter.

There's also the fact that het romance is everywhere. I usually like the canon pairings but I'm not interested in fanworks for something that's already covered in canon. I turn to fandom for the things I don't get in canon, and slash is one of them.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-04 04:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Some of it's probably the whole one guy is hot so two guys are hotter. But at this point I think it's peer pressure. When I got on the internet and made friends they were into slash. We RPed so I tried to make a gay character. Once they had their gay characters try to rape my straight one. I was kinda scarred for life from RPing. I think had I had a different experience maybe I'd be more into it? I don't know.

I can find a gay/lesbian ship cute IF it's canon. I can't wrap my brain around slashing straight characters.
