I love reading shipping fic, but I pretty much only read slash even though I'm not a femslash or het hater. I'm not sure exactly why this is. Maybe I find the male characters more interesting? The slash fic I've read is usually the best quality due to the ability to pick and choose. I do wish there was more femslash and het that I was interested in.

So, you know, there's this thing called "gen" you may have heard of...

Uh, okay. Yeah, I know. Did you miss the part where I said I like reading shipping fic? I'll read gen, but I'm in fandom for fic featuring romance, first-times and slow burns.

I sympathize. I mostly read slash or gen these days myself, even though I actually ship more het. I'm not really sure why, but it's really hard for me to find het fic that feels right - feels "in character", I guess. I have no problem shipping het couples madly onscreen, but it just doesn't translate to fic. And the same goes for femslash. I honestly do not know why I'm so out of step with het and femslash writers, but most of the time I find myself looking for it, and then backing out halfway through because I'm like "no no no...they wouldn't DO that, they wouldn't SAY that, no no no." It just doesn't connect with me emotionally the way it does on screen.

Of course you do. You've been programmed to your whole life.

I wouldn't say "programmed," but I would agree that because there are less women characters in my chosen fandoms, and, while they may interest me in the context of the medium, I'm not particularly interested in the fanworks that feature them for various reasons. There just aren't as many fics that feature females as there are that feature males. I would read, like, an epicly long Hermione/Ginny, Luna/Hermione, Uhura/Chapel, etc. fic, if I could find one that suited my tastes.

So, maybe I was flippant in saying I prefered slash because I like male characters better; I don't actually think that is entirely the case.

(I do know what you mean by "programmed," but, I've been thinking since I wrote the first comment, and I really don't think that reason I prefer to read slash has much to do with media mysoginy or anything like that.)
