For some fandoms, I just want gen, with hints of canon ships (LOST, Fringe, Vampire Diaries), but it's impossible to find. I just want fic in which Caroline has been a vampire for a 100 years! No ships, just her being awesome! Is that so much to ask? :(

This is me. Some fandoms just don't feel overtly shippy to me, and reading explicit ship fic in them is just...weird. Just brief mentions of canon pairings in an overall gen fic would be a lot better, but like you said, it doesn't seem that there's much of it.

Yeah, this is my favorite type of fic too -- gen, with canon pairings in the background. However, although I am not quite as big a fan of shippy fics in theory, I read them a lot more often than gen fics because it seems all good fics are shippy and/or slashy.

Yeah, it seems like gen is getting harder and harder to find. I mean, you can find short fic, but long epic gen? That's kinda a dying breed I think. Or maybe I'm just in the wrong fandoms. *shrugs*

+1 I love me some porny slash, and honestly, that's usually what I search out, but I'd like to see some more gen.

I'm not sure it can really be called gen if there are ships involved. Maybe look for stuff in the action/adventure or drama genres that are with canon pairings? They may have what you are looking for.
