You know, I didn't think that badly of Pema until I remembered that she told Korra (and her daughters) that its okay to confess to an already taken man. I personally disagree with that. She had no idea who Mako and Asami were and what their relationship was like or even if Mako and Korra had chemistry. She just told her to do it. As a woman, I personally can't like another woman like that sorry. It's pitting women against each other for another man.

IMO OP, it's not slut-shaming. I'm just against how normal LoK (and society) tries to make cheating/being mentally checked out of relationship look.

This. That was a horrible advice imo.

..Now why do I have a feeling that she did the same with Lin and Tenzin..

This has nothing to do with the merits of one ship or another, but the fact that Pema gave Korra really bad advice that totally backfired on her and messed things up even further with Mako, Bolin, and Asami made her character seem a lot more memorable, interesting, and human than just being Tenzin's kindly yet bland wife.

I would have been alright with this if only it had been acknowledged. Instead, the consequences were brushed aside and haven't been mentioned since.

To be fair, there's a lot of consequences to things that keep getting brushed off in LoK. For a shorter show with no room for filler, they sure do manage to keep dropping and postponing plot-threads in uneven ways. (Korra sobs to Tenzin about her fears of Amon. Next episode: la la la, pro-bending tiems nao you guys, Amon who?~)

That said, I do get the impression that Pema's advice wasn't supposed to be as bad as it seemed or even rather romantic. If it had been worded differently, it would've been less...problematic. Or if the scene had been expanded, or even pseudo-expanded with a little time jump implying Korra had just explained the whole situation to her... sigh.

It wasn't bad advice. Korra just didn't know how to execute it well.

It's no different than the nice guy situation. You may think you're nice to a girl but if she doesn't know you're interested you'll always just be the friend.

It really seemed like Korra was looking for someone to tell her it was OK to attack love like she does with everything else in life; Headfirst without thinking.

If Lin and Tenzin's relationship was good it shouldn't have been so easy for someone to break it apart. Unluckily for Korra, Mako isn't easily swayed.

This, definitely, is what I got out of that episode. Korra didn't know how to deal with her feelings, having never been in love before, and when Pema told her that confessing is ok, she just went straight for it without stopping to consider anyone else's feelings (Mako's Bolin's, etc).

^This!

This. Being honest isn't wrong. I actually hate the keep-your-mouth-shut trope so that 20 years down the line they can find each other and go, "I've loved you all along!" "Me too! Why did we wait??"

If Lin and Tenzin's relationship was good it shouldn't have been so easy for someone to break it apart.

This x1000!
