Because good lord, this show needs some reoccurring secondary characters that don't fucking die after an episode. It's one of the things that I despise is the kill-happy attitude the creators have with the show. Yeah, I get that their world is dangerous but ... jeez.

I love Castiel a whole bunch, and I'm glad that they brought him back, if only as an additional foil because the Sam'n'Dean show gets really old, really fast these days.

THIS. The Sam'n'Dean show has been so boring, especially this season, because it's just Sam'n'Dean. They say they wanna get back to S1/2/3, but IIRC, they had Bobby, Ellen, Jo, Meg, Ruby, John, etc. At least, until they killed them all off. :/

Seriously, agreed. I can get not liking certain characters (I don't care for Bobby, myself) but the show needs at least SOME recurring characters, preferably ones that have been around for a few seasons and have had a decent role in the plot. Castiel counts big time for that.

If I had my druthers, we'd keep Cas and Jo, Ellen and Victor at a minimum would be somehow magically brought back. And we'd get more JDM!John and Mary, too.

Also, I'd like a pony.

THIS.

Back in the first few season Sam and Dean had stuff to talk about and halfway healthy interactions. Secondary characters helped keep the draaaaama from overtaking the action and the plot. If Cas hadn't been there to show up and give the Winchesters something do every once in a while, this is how every episode of Supernatural would have been scripted:

1. Sam and Dean talk about their feelings
2. Sam and Dean talk about the emotional rifts that can't be fixed
3. Sam and Dean break up and go their own ways
4. Sam and Dean realize they are incomplete without each other
5. Sam and Dean get back together and drink a beer next to the Impala
6. Rinse and repeat

Really? You can't possible think that what the anon above described would be a good thing. Because I do agree completely with that anon. Cas was barely in S7, and we did NOT get a significant brothers or individual Sam or Dean storylines. We didn't really get much of anything with them. There was Sam's mental issues, which was something I guess, and allusions to Dean's depression and alcoholism but no payoff.

So all these arguments that Cas was "stealing" time from Sam and Dean are completely unfounded, IMO.

Oh sweet baby Jesus, yes. Every show needs more than two characters, but if we HAD to be stuck with only two, I'd prefer Bobby and Cas at this point! However, I'm going to guess the OP doesn't have a problem with secondary characters per se. Just Cas. Like we haven't seen this exact secret ten million times before.

FTR - I cannot STAND Cas or Mischa. One of the reasons I left the fandom. OP - you have a point, at this point, it's just TPTB pandering to the female fanbase.

This. I like Sam and Dean fine, but it's nice to have secondary characters, too. And I think Supernatural has had some really great secondary characters over the years...but most of them have died.
