I don't hate him but I do think that he has out lived his stay. I don't understand how he got to be more populer than Sam and Dean. I mean when he "died" at the start of this last season the fangirls went nuts. I feel like they brought him back just becasue the fangirls wanted him back.

OP here. I have no clue how he got more popular than Sam and Dean. I can't fathom it. I also feel that they only brought him back for his fans, and there's no legitimate reason for him to be around anymore. In seasons 4 and 5 he had a place in the story, somewhat in 6, but all during 7 it felt too forced.

I feel the same way, and I agree that they just brought him back because the fangirls whined about it. I don't loathe him or anything, but I am baffled by how he got to be so popular (and more popular than Sam or Dean in some cases).

Because good lord, this show needs some reoccurring secondary characters that don't fucking die after an episode. It's one of the things that I despise is the kill-happy attitude the creators have with the show. Yeah, I get that their world is dangerous but ... jeez.

I love Castiel a whole bunch, and I'm glad that they brought him back, if only as an additional foil because the Sam'n'Dean show gets really old, really fast these days.

I'm not a Misha fangirl. I followed his twitter account for a while, but his 'act' got annoying. But I've never really liked Supernatural without him either. I got into the show because so many secrets popped up around season 4&5. I tried to start at the beginning, but I honestly didn't like it. But I was still curious so I figured I'd just see what all the fuss was about, season 4 and the whole angel arc. That show was interesting so I kept watching. I tried to keep watching after the apocalypse, but it was mainly Sam & Dean & monsters again. And their angst, of course.

For me, it's not just that Castiel is an interesting character, it's that he tends to pop up when the story gets interesting. Some people prefer the episodes where it's just the brothers and the evil of the week, I like the arcs and all the big revelations. At least, I like them when they're done well.

Pretty impressive that such a useless character managed to be the most interesting part of all of season 7 in just 4.0002 episodes.

I'm sorry but if you honestly, 100% believe that there's nowhere else to go with his story, there's nothing interesting left to do with him, then I seriously question your imagination.

Dislike the character all you like, that's absolutely fine. You don't even need to give a reason, we all have different tastes, it's your prerogative! But the second you say stuff like, "oh he's only there because FANSERVICE!!!" or he has "no story", lol I'm sorry were we even watching the same show?

And I don't see how this is hard to understand, but at least half the reason people were so pissed off about him being killed off in 7.2? Was because they killed him half way through his story. No resolution, no send-off or goodbye. Just gone. There's a reason season 7 only finally started to pick up when he came back.

Probably shouldn't be commenting as I'm almost a whole season behind but...I've never been a big fan either, OP. That said I do realize the show needs secondary characters so from that standpoint, I can understand them not wanting to permanently off him. And yes, the fandom is in love with him too, so that certainly doesn't hurt, but TPTB probably have reasons beyond that for keeping him around.

I do think that the shape of the show has fundamentally changed with that character, and not just because of the fangirls. I also think there's plenty of places they can go with crazy!Cas, so.

This is the stupidest thing to me, I'm sorry. Especially after S7 when he was gone for almost all of it. If Cas was that huge a hindrance to an awesome Sam and Dean focused storyline, then S7 should have been the greatest thing for you since sliced bread.

Yet S7 kind of sucked all around, but especially on the Sam and Dean front. Castiel being gone didn't help anything at all. The show skipped them and focused on Bobby instead for the emotional development and character exploration.

And there's no reason to keep him around because his storylines are all used up? Um, okay, whatever. Sam doesn't have a storyline anymore either, not since the Hallucifer thing was resolved, and Dean hasn't had a major storyline in years unless you count Lisa and Ben. Except wait, now Dean's in Purgatory with Cas and Sam is desperate to rescue them. So, huh. Actually ALL of them have a storyline. Because that's how multiseasonal shows work - one storyline is resolved and another one is begun.

Castiel isn't my favorite character but I like him well enough, especially if he's being a bit shady or presumptuous. I don't like his current portrayal at all, but I don't watch for him anyway so all I can do is hope that it's only a temporary characterization that he'll outgrow sooner rather than later. I watch for Sam and Dean and continued watching for them while Cas was gone and would continue to watch for them if Cas were killed off permanently. But the show just sucks when it's only Sam and Dean. They're both so tired and depressed and worn down, having other characters to bounce off of helps both of them.

I lurk enough in fandom to know that you referring to Sam as 'wallpaper' shows we shouldn't be taking anything you say seriously, but OMG this is a stupid, stupid secret.

Of course the PTB are going to keep a character that fans like, they are selling a product and they want their customers to keep coming back. WHY IS THIS SO HARD FOR PEOPLE TO UNDERSTAND?

1. I can't believe people still watch Supernatural.
2. I hated Castiel from the beginning and he was one of the biggest reasons I stopped watching. Really, the whole angels vs demons thing got incredibly lame after a while. The actor seems like a nice dude but he's not very good at acting and Castiel just can't carry the show like that.

I'm not sure we're watching the same show here. He was dead for most of season 7, and frankly, the show was bland and dragging. The only thing that made it even watchable was the Bobby storyline. After episode two, things went completely downhill again, to the point that it was just a dragging mess of Sam and Dean angsting off of each other.

And even if they only brought him back because of his fans, it should be a testament to how strongly the fans like his character. You don't get that many people loving you by being bland and not contributing anything to the show.

Also, that's Misha. Maybe watching the show enough to know the difference would help to see all of the truly outstanding moments Cas has had throughout it. He's a very layered and complex character, even if they've been doing stupid things to him since they brought him back.

Personally, I don't think Misha is capable of playing a bland character. He's a tremendous actor.

I am so on the opposite spectrum of this secret, probably obvious from my icon and username.

It's hard for me to picture someone seeing Castiel as useless and bland. Before he showed up, I enjoyed the show, but once he appeared the show had so much more depth. He's the reason I joined fandom. I love that character and it amazes me I could love a fictional character so much. But never mind me, Castiel touched A LOT of people, obviously, that's why the fans LOVE him and logically that couldn't be possible if he was truly useless and bland.

I think Jensen and Jared and other people involved with the show also wanted Castiel back, not just the "fans".

I guess I got lucky when I hated Bela. She got killed off and never came back.
