Yet S7 kind of sucked all around, but especially on the Sam and Dean front. Castiel being gone didn't help anything at all. The show skipped them and focused on Bobby instead for the emotional development and character exploration.
And there's no reason to keep him around because his storylines are all used up? Um, okay, whatever. Sam doesn't have a storyline anymore either, not since the Hallucifer thing was resolved, and Dean hasn't had a major storyline in years unless you count Lisa and Ben. Except wait, now Dean's in Purgatory with Cas and Sam is desperate to rescue them. So, huh. Actually ALL of them have a storyline. Because that's how multiseasonal shows work - one storyline is resolved and another one is begun.
Castiel isn't my favorite character but I like him well enough, especially if he's being a bit shady or presumptuous. I don't like his current portrayal at all, but I don't watch for him anyway so all I can do is hope that it's only a temporary characterization that he'll outgrow sooner rather than later. I watch for Sam and Dean and continued watching for them while Cas was gone and would continue to watch for them if Cas were killed off permanently. But the show just sucks when it's only Sam and Dean. They're both so tired and depressed and worn down, having other characters to bounce off of helps both of them.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-03 10:19 pm (UTC)(link)get away they don't like your type in the spn fandom. IT'S ABOUT SAM AND DEAN YOU'RE NOT A REAL FAN.

I'm easily amused?

Though seriously I'm grateful that in my corner of fandom, hatred of any character is pretty rare. They pretty much like everyone. Irrational hatred of any character pisses me off but it's not a common event, thank fuck. I can love Dean best and enjoy every Sam scene and most of the Cas ones and not have to worry about people screaming about how "X IS RUINING THE SHOW" or "YOU ARE NO REAL FAN, SIR."

But I pretty much agree. I like the direction they're going, because for the first time in what feels like an eternity, we might get character dev for EVERYONE (who's still alive, that is...).

I like the direction now as well! I had lost a lot of interest in S7 because it felt like a lot of waffling and I didn't enjoy the Leviathans much, but I'm very interested about Purgatory and where all of the (remaining) characters are at. :D

I always felt bad about S7 because it had so much potential and it just flopped terribly. The premeire was super strong, and then it all feel apart, so I hope that S8 will be better in all regards.

Same here! I had stopped watching SPN in S6 for a while, then tuned in to see the finale and was super stoked about it. Godstiel was epic! And the Sams! I was so excited for it, I can't even tell you. I was on tenterhooks all summer because I couldn't wait to see what happened next.
Only, yeah. S7 just sort of collapsed on itself like a flan in a cupboard on a hot day. I'm a bit nervous now because I feel like I'm in the exact same boat with S8 - really excited after the last finale! Can't wait to see where it goes! - so if S8 goes as flat as S7 was, it'll be a huge letdown.

Ahem. Yeah, basically all of this. Season 7 had so much potential but on a whole it was "meh" for me. I just hope they don't do the same thing they did at the start of last season in the start of 8 and just fix the huge cliffhanger problem in the first episode, because oh god the purgatory thing has potential.
First, you have all the monsters Dean has killed over the years. Then there's the fact that Castiel fucking ate everyone there not that long ago. Oh and don't forget all the leviathans who no doubt are extra pissed and would like to eat them BOTH alive over and over and over again for the rest of eternity. The potential for an episode or two(or three...) focusing on them literally facing the casualties of their pasts is EPIC.

Preaching to the choir here. S7 had a good start and an excellent set up. It would have been the first time in years that they'd really had a personal villain, one with deep connections with Sam and Dean and a reason to want to interact with them - and a deeply personal reason for Sam and Dean themselves to want to stop him and one that wasn't just related to guilt and shame to boot! And yet, no. Godstiel was erased within a pathetically short amount of time and what we got to replace him was just dull.
YES, YES, EXACTLY DEAN AND HIS MONSTERS. :D Especially since Dean's been stuck in the whole "I'm no better than a monster" mentality for ages now! How better to spur some development for him than to have him be confronted by a world populated SOLELY by monsters! Ones that have absolutely no reason to be pleased with him, either. Or maybe ones that do! It would be need to see Madison back, for instance. And I like the theory that demons and angels go to Purgatory when they die, so Anna, Azazel, and Alistair might all be in the mix as well. Well, Dean wouldn't be pleased to see Azazel or Alistair, but they would likely be happy to see him...
And yes for Cas too! He spent most of the end of the season seeming to avoid looking at his actions and not wanting to deal with the consequences of them. He's surrounded by his consequences now. :D
I'd love a few episodes on that! Actually, I'd love the whole damn SEASON to be focused on that. Sam shouldn't rescue them from Purgatory, he should just cross over himself and then all three of them can kick ass over there. :D
