I'm in the same boat as you, OP. Not specifically with Kairi (I think she's interesting when she's developed more in fic, though I still do prefer Sora/Riku) but I end up shipping characters when the "rival" character is someone I legitimately dislike for reasons outside of shipping (or at least I dislike the opposing ship for reasons other than it being the opposing ship).

It's not like I take issue with other people liking ships or characters I don't, it just irks me that I can't be honest about my dislikes, too. I feel like fandom's so opposed to ship wars and bashing that not liking things has become not okay.

This so hard. I have the same issue in my fandom: I ship a non-canon pairing because I really dislike the main female character for reasons that have nothing to do with shipping (she's very flat and undeveloped to the point where you could take her out of the story and absolutely nothing about it would change because her only role is to be the token love interest).

But if you dare say that you dislike her you get jumped on and called a misogynist (and yes I have seen this happen to fans on tumblr) even if you give legitimate reasons for it. The only reason I ended up shipping the non-canon pairing in the first place was because I hated how the lead girl literally had no importance to the plot other than being the love interest... isn't that way more misogynistic than disliking the character?
