I don't DISLIKE her, but I don't really like her either. She's pretty damn bland, as you say.

This is a good argument for disliking Kairi, IMHO, and I'm reasonably fond of her (I personally like flat characters because they can be developed according to personal tastes through fanfic, etc.).

Though, thanks to the secret ending of DDD, I'm expecting to see a future installment give her some character development, which will be nice.

Kairi just felt like that random LI that no one really cares about and is in the background most of the time. Idk.

I adore Kairi, but even I admit that she was more of a plot device than a character in KH1. In KH2, she actually got to be her own person -- brave, loyal and strong. I totally understand not liking her, though. First impressions are hard to get past. Just ship as you will, and don't bash, and people who like Kairi won't bother you.

Kairi does do stuff on her own, though I guess it depends on how much you're willing to say she did it by herself. But she did run away from Axel even when he said he could take her to Sora. She also started fighting back the Shadows when she was given a Keyblade by Ansem!Riku. Again though, I suppose it depends on how much you want to say she did those by herself, but she was certainly acting on her own thoughts.

(OT but oh man, now that we're on dreamwidth I'm going to have to be anonymous for forever more. Sad. :()

Agreed. Xion on the other hand, who's very similar but is actually so much more developed than Kairi, is a character I simply adore.
Kairi just brings nothing to the table, so I'm not surprised by all the hate she gets. However, I'm a bit taken aback by people who actively bash Kairi. I mean, what's there to hate? There's nothing there.

Oh, Kairi. She was just... there in KH. I wanted to like her, I really did, but her voice acting grated on my nerves, and she sent you on fetch quests and...blaaaargh.

Aww, I love Kairi. I have to admit she's really hard to like in the first game, all we see is that Sora's obsessed with getting her back, yet we don't really get to see anything of what she's actually like. But she really does improve in the second game, and further games suggest that she'll take a course in badass.

But yeah, I'm with you on the 'I can't say I don't like [female character] because I happen to ship [male character/male character] even though my dislike is unrelated.'

Kairi is going to train to become a keyblade master in KH3. At the end of KHDDD Sora fails the test, but Riku passes. They need seven people to defeat the...sigh, Xehanort threat so Riku is asked to get Kairi to come train.

I actually hated Kairi in KH1 and then I started liking her in KH2. The character I really don't care for was Roxas. I was glad I didn't have to play him after the into thing.

If we're complaining about voice acting, then Riku's was also pretty damn awful in KH1. It got better (...ish) in KH2, and was amazing in Re:CoM (and presumably 3D, I haven't played it), but in the beginning it was pretty awful.

Not saying Kairi's was good in the beginning either, but we gotta be fair.

I'm in the same boat as you, OP. Not specifically with Kairi (I think she's interesting when she's developed more in fic, though I still do prefer Sora/Riku) but I end up shipping characters when the "rival" character is someone I legitimately dislike for reasons outside of shipping (or at least I dislike the opposing ship for reasons other than it being the opposing ship).

It's not like I take issue with other people liking ships or characters I don't, it just irks me that I can't be honest about my dislikes, too. I feel like fandom's so opposed to ship wars and bashing that not liking things has become not okay.

Her character design in 2 is really cute. That's... about the extent of my Kairi Opinions.

I do like her, but I think that's because I used to RP with some really solid Kairi RPers and that sort of became my headcanon for her. *shrug*

I don't really like her much in KH1 because they don't really develop her as more than a pretty girl for Sora to chase after, but they did a great job of making her better in KH2.

I have a similar problem involving Sakura from Naruto. Whenever I say that I dislike her, people naturally assume that it's because I must like Sasuke/Naruto, which I don't. She's just a dumb character. (I don't outright HATE her either. She's just done tons of dumbass stuff.)

For being a main character, I'm just surprised by how little character development Kairi has. Whereas Sakura at least HAS a personality, Kairi's just... got nuthin on her side to defend her with. In reverse to this secret, I'm pretty sure that anyone who likes Kairi actually only likes her because they ship her with one of the guys in the triangle.

I've blissfully come to dislike all the characters in Kingdom Hearts equally. Yes, I can hardly stand myself for calling myself fan of these games, with all sincerity. For me they have become worse and worse with every new title maybe excluding Birth By Sleep - but I still want to like Kingdom Hearts, even if it has become the biggest, ugliest guilty pleasure gameseries I've ever had, and the one I refuse to acknowledge as one.

Kairi is one of the few I've began to dislike less over time - Dead Fantasy, though not having anything to do canon(or maybe because of that) helped big time. It is hard to be disappointed to character with no personality, so in a way OP, I agree with you. I dont ship Sora and Riku, or either of them with her. I think that the mad shipping culture withing Kingdom Hearts fandom is one of the most despicable part of it...
