I just found it and it made me cry too. I think it's more about the manipulative power of people singing emotionally than the "tragic love story". I thought Fassbender was pretty, but 99.99% of the fanfic for this pairing has left me entirely cold and disappointed.

The fanfic issue is probably because no fanfic could ever be as gloriously gay as Fassbender and McAvoy and the director and the screenwriter made the actual movie. It all falls short. :P

Slash fic is much easier to do well if you're carefully sampling hidden potential that you need to dig for, mine, analyze and gently tease out. Gorging on something that's pre-mined, purified, cut, polished, and presented to the viewer on a gigantic silver platter illuminated by twenty high-powered spotlights and carried down Main Street on a red carpet surrounded by parades of confetti-spraying elephants and marching brass bands waving rainbow banners usually takes a whole hell of a lot more talent and creativity to look good. :)

I don't know if slash is necessarily easier to do well when it is not practically canon, but, for me, slash fic tends be more interesting if it features a developing relationship as opposed an established one. I think a lot of people prefer reading about relationship forming (from friends to lovers, enemies to lovers, etc.), that's why "first time" fic is, like, 75% of fic. When the canon features a couple that have a (seemingly) canon romantic relationship, then all us lovers of the slow burns and first times are left feeling like we've seen it already. That's why, for example, I prefer reading reboot Kirk/Spock to TOS K/S.

So, pretty much what you said, but slightly different. :)

tbh I was just starting to think that XMFC had somehow attracted a bunch of writers/fans that I just didn't get at all. I was having some uncharitable thoughts about marvel fandom.

But it's true that I really prefer UST with lots of genuine tragic angst, and it's hard to get that with the confetti spraying elephants of the movie showing them practically married already. And now that I have all this amazing Avengers squee, I feel kind of guilty. Sorry Marvel fans!

I love UST, antagonism the best though, so I'm on Tony/Steve kick right now.

hmmm, I haven't actually read any Bruce fic. He seems angsty but I only know Avengers movie canon, and get confused when people write the Hulk as not deadly and scary. Maybe I should try harder- I love ansgty Tony already. Any recs?

I haven't really found my perfect UST fic in Avengers yet, but I'm really enjoying the Gen and Steve/Tony. I think the whole "everyone being buddies in a big mansion" trope makes everything pretty lighthearted? Can't have too much tragic suffering hanging out with all your fun friends in your mansion/penthouse.

Yeah, but they all have lives outside of the Avengers too, and those lives are usually verrrrry angsty and traumatic. Clint has the whole mindrape and guilt-over-killing-his-coworkers thing, Natasha has the whole used-to-be-a-bad-guy thing, both of them have the whole our-handler/bff-got-murdered thing, Thor has the whole my-brother-is-an-evil-lunatic thing, Bruce has the whole green-rage-monster thing, and Steve has the whole my-entire-world-is-gone-and-I'll-never-get-it-back thing.

Ironically, I think Tony's the guy with the best life as of now. Awesome girlfriend, loads of money, bunch of new friends, building epic tower for his pals and doing good things for society, probably doesn't hate himself nearly much as he used to since sacrificing himself. Weird.

But yeah, I just see them as a big bickering ragtag bunch of misfits who caught a bad case of Troll In The Dungeon Syndrome ("there are some things you can't share without coming out liking each other, and knocking out a twelve-foot mountain troll (or saving the world from a deranged god, cyborg aliens, and a nuke) is one of them" - Harry Potter), which is too cute for drawn out UST and angst and stuff (I'm a big gen fan myself).

Recs? Uhh...just trawl AO3, is my rec. They have some really damn good fics, and there are really too many angsty Tony fics to ever count -- he's kind of the go-to woobie for the part of the fandom who aren't lusting over Loki.

Yes, trawl AO3, as intrigueing said. I, like, live there. OH NO POOR TONY (aka, wobbiefying -thanks, Fanlore) is almost every Tony fic I've read so far.

I only "know" Avengers movie canon too. But, I actually studied wiki and such to read a Marvel 616 universe fic, which is totally dorky, but an option if you don't want to read the comics and want to know more about the characters.

Hm. A lot of the other fic I've read only has quick flashes of angst, but is mostly lighthearted, like you said. I haven't read any Tony/Bruce that wasn't PWP, so I can't help you there.
