I have so much love for that vid <3

(Anonymous) 2012-06-06 04:35 am (UTC)(link)
Ditto. It's bookmarked with one of my very rare star ratings.

~otp. i've given up getting over how très tragique and appealing they are. it's reached the rihanna point where it's all right because i like the way hurts.

I just found it and it made me cry too. I think it's more about the manipulative power of people singing emotionally than the "tragic love story". I thought Fassbender was pretty, but 99.99% of the fanfic for this pairing has left me entirely cold and disappointed.

[identity profile] intrigueing.livejournal.com 2012-06-06 12:04 am (UTC)(link)
The fanfic issue is probably because no fanfic could ever be as gloriously gay as Fassbender and McAvoy and the director and the screenwriter made the actual movie. It all falls short. :P

Slash fic is much easier to do well if you're carefully sampling hidden potential that you need to dig for, mine, analyze and gently tease out. Gorging on something that's pre-mined, purified, cut, polished, and presented to the viewer on a gigantic silver platter illuminated by twenty high-powered spotlights and carried down Main Street on a red carpet surrounded by parades of confetti-spraying elephants and marching brass bands waving rainbow banners usually takes a whole hell of a lot more talent and creativity to look good. :)

I don't know if slash is necessarily easier to do well when it is not practically canon, but, for me, slash fic tends be more interesting if it features a developing relationship as opposed an established one. I think a lot of people prefer reading about relationship forming (from friends to lovers, enemies to lovers, etc.), that's why "first time" fic is, like, 75% of fic. When the canon features a couple that have a (seemingly) canon romantic relationship, then all us lovers of the slow burns and first times are left feeling like we've seen it already. That's why, for example, I prefer reading reboot Kirk/Spock to TOS K/S.

So, pretty much what you said, but slightly different. :)

This image made my night!! and I think explains the phenomena really well.

tbh I was just starting to think that XMFC had somehow attracted a bunch of writers/fans that I just didn't get at all. I was having some uncharitable thoughts about marvel fandom.

But it's true that I really prefer UST with lots of genuine tragic angst, and it's hard to get that with the confetti spraying elephants of the movie showing them practically married already. And now that I have all this amazing Avengers squee, I feel kind of guilty. Sorry Marvel fans!

I cry because I can't be a mutant, too. I cry from my red, dry, non-lazer-shooting eyes.

[personal profile] elaminator 2012-06-05 11:36 pm (UTC)(link)
That song + that pairing = perfect combination.

"X-Men is such a tragically beautiful love story" is a nice way to sum the movie up, too.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-06 05:59 pm (UTC)(link)
I saw a GIF of your icon and was like, 'there's no way I can watch that movie without turning into a broken-hearted wreck for a week afterwards'. So I have never seen the movie and their tragicness has already affected me.
elaminator: (Legend of the Seeker: Kahlan)

[personal profile] elaminator 2012-06-06 07:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Aww, never seen the movie? Imo it's brilliant. Not Oscar material of course, but Fassbender and McAvoy are perfect in their roles and both are very lovable and easy to sympathize with in their own ways. And as for them as a pairing...well...yeaaa, they clearly become the most important person in each others lives (with the exception of Raven with Charles) very quickly; it sorta is a 'whirlwind' romance even if there's no sex.

But...yup, even though it has lighter moments, it's an extremely tragic movie (from beginning to end) and not for the easily upset, I suppose.

Hell, I cried in the first ten minutes, then two more times. It's an X-Men movie! *is a sucker for punishment because she's seen it probably six times and has cried every single time*

Okay, so I thought I'd seen this vid, but just checked to make sure it was the one I was thinking of and...no, it wasn't. This...wow anon, thanks for the rec SO much because this is beautiful and seriously, expertly edited. Haven't watched a vid this well put together...in a long time, if ever.

Ahh X-Men First Class! Otherwise known as the gayest movie to ever gay, (including movies that were actually supposed to be gay) and damn if Charles/Erik weren't the single closest thing to canonizing a slash pairing I've ever witnessed in any movie ever. And this is coming from someone who never wears her slash goggles unless fandom makes her aware of it beforehand, and usually is too oblivious to notice any slash potential in a m/m or f/f relationship until she is bombarded with several tons of fanfic or fanvids.

*scurries off to watch video in question*

It should be the first result on Youtube for "Erik Charles Rolling in the Deep". :3

(Anonymous) 2012-06-06 12:33 am (UTC)(link)
imo opinion that title actually goes to Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows, bit XMFC is certainly a close second.
brooms: (Default)

[personal profile] brooms 2012-06-06 01:01 am (UTC)(link)
game of shadows loses the first spot in my personal ranking because it was obvious everyone involved was playing up "the gay". it was intentional.

i don't think it was the case with XMFC. i think the gay was accidental in that one. the result of a messy script and two quality actors trying to make a ~6 months or so relationship more meaningful than it had any right to be.

Alright I'm back from watching & I cried thank you OP

"tragically beautiful" will, however, never not be a funny phrase thanks to That One Mishap With The Walking Dead

Never cared for this pairing, but beautifully-done fanvid.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-06 05:55 am (UTC)(link)
That's one of my favorite fanvids. Not because I ship Erik/Charles (I don't), but because it is SO WELL-EDITED.

No shame

I cried when I finally fully understood that I would never fly. The end of childhood is cruel.
