I thought Sansa was a complete brat at first but she grew on me somehow.

I don't like her for the whole "I'm gonna ignore my mother's advice and rush headlong into this guy's arms just because he's cute and gonna be the king, but mostly cuz he's cute" thing. And (as far as I gathered from the show) it wasn't about upward mobility for the fam; it was all about her crushing on him. Then there's the "he's a lying dick and a wimp whose actions got both a kid and my pet murdered." Still making googly eyes at him after that? Yea, no.

She's not very smart, IMO. And the "she's young!" excuse just doesn't cut it for me. Maybe I'm too harsh but oh well. Not sorry.

She starts out naive. She's just a kid (in the book she's just eleven when we meet her). But she grows past that and becomes one of the strongest characters in the series.

It honestly bewilders me how people can dislike her after the first book/series but that's imo.

Well I haven't gotten very far into the series. I've heard that she grows quite a bit. I still can't get over the idiocy of her actions. That wasn't being naive. That was flat out stupidity, IMO. I can look back on some of my actions from childhood and tell the difference between a childish mistake and flat out being dumb.

I dunno, I finished the first series/season and I still dislike her. She hasn't done anything. She sits there and looks sad. Which, you know, she's in a pretty sad situation. But I don't see how she's strong about anything.

Keep in mind I haven't read any of the books, so maybe they do better by her.

It surprises me that her age as a factor doesn't inform her entire story for some people.

Kids grow up quicker in Westeros, true, but Sansa is eleven through thirteen for her story. She's the kid on Tumblr who desperately wants to marry Justin Bieber. She's the girl in your class who found Twilight unambiguously romantic. Or - if you're my age - loved Sweet Valley more than Point Horror. She's a young girl at that age when you completely plastered every available surface of your room in pictures of the most unthreatening looking member of your favourite boyband.

I was more of an Arya myself growing up, but I knew so many Sansas. She's so similar to tweens I see around the place now that even at her most annoying I just get heartbroken at how her illusions are going to be shattered. Poor sweet tweenybopper Sansa.

I knew a lot of crazy tweens too. I'm a camp counselor so understand that kind of fanaticism LOL.

But seeing firsthand what kind of ass-hole behavior he's capable of? Against your own sister and an innocent boy? And watching him lie like that? I just can't chock that up to childhood fancies. I really can't.

Eh? I thought the betrothal was arranged by Ned and Robert.

Sansa has no clue what a douche he is that that point, though. Of course he butters her up until the wolf attack, which is when she stops idolizing him.

I didn't think I would like her either, but now I want her to win everything *shrug*. But if you still end up not liking her after you catch up, that's okay, too.

But even when she was still obnoxious, her chapters tended to have the most interesting people in them, so there's that.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-09 10:04 am (UTC)(link)
My biggest issue with the butcher's boy/direwolf killings was that NED did nothing. IMO, he should've told Robert to find another Hand and taken his daughters back home. The fact that he doesn't, that Sansa is still betrothed to Joff after that...makes it a bit easier to understand why she'd still try to see the best in him, imo. At that point, if her father saw that moment as an isolated incident and still thought it was okay for her to marry Joff (as his actions surely suggested), why shouldn't she? Why shouldn't she attempt to forgive the boy she's going to spend the rest of her life with? Why shouldn't she hope that was the only time Joff would do something so awful? Not to mention that Cersei's the one who came up with the punishment, so it's on her head as much as Joffrey's. As well as on Robert's for not putting a stop to it.

I think all the Game of Thrones characters are unlikable. Actually, the whole series is pretty unlikable, I never understood why it became so popular. Sansa was mostly obnoxious and nothing else.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-08 11:41 pm (UTC)(link)
That's... a very human reaction, OP.

The things that we hate the most in others? The mistakes and flaws that we forgive the less in others?

They're usually the flaws and mistakes that we perceive in ourselves, whether we realize it or not.

I didn't like her when I first encountered her in the books, either, but then I realized GRRM was transparently setting us up to prefer tough badass Arya to sensitive flower Sansa, so then I liked Sansa just out of spite.

And then I genuinely liked her when I realized I would totally have behaved like Sansa in her situation: namely, getting depressed and withdrawing in on myself.

And now I just like her.

[personal profile] fauxkaren 2012-06-09 12:31 am (UTC)(link)
I feel like GRRM set you up to prefer Arya to Sansa just so that you would feel like a sucker for not liking Sansa earlier after her life goes to shit and you see how strong and clever she is.

Um. But maybe I'm giving him too much credit.

...I think he was just setting her up to get some serious character development.

She's grown on me. She was naive and something of a gold-digger when she first appeared, but that sure as hell got beaten out of her. Now she's a piller of quiet strength, surviving, feeding the bastards with whatever lies they want to hear, calculating her chances -- as it is she doesn't trust anyone and I can't blame her. I just wish that she could get out the situation.

I don't know how she is in the books, I got half way through the first and found myself skipping over the parts that were about characters I just didn't like and ... well, that doesn't work.

I really like her character progression.

She is bratty to begin with. She's living in a dream world. She's been so sheltered and has her head so far in the clouds that she believes in the fantasy. And then, more dramatically than most, she has her childhood dreams shattered and has to learn to deal with the consequences of the decisions she has made. Along the way, she develops into a very strong character.

I can understand though that she irks you if share similarities. I think very often the people who annoy us most are the people we are most like.

I'm pretty much convinced she was written to be disliked, at least in the beginning. I really hated her in the first book.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-09 03:11 am (UTC)(link)
I just don't like her because her stans were so fucking annoying in FMM.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-09 05:35 am (UTC)(link)
I actually really like Sansa in the books but not so much in the show. Maybe its because of the age difference between the two medias. I can understand that level of naivety from an 11 year old more than a 13 year old. But anyway to me Sansa seems to believe that the world is good and like all young girls who have seen too many disney movies, believes her prince charming will come save her. She was taught to be that way! That's why Arya always used to get in so much trouble. Sansa was taught to be a 'lady' and fulfill the princess role while Arya pretty much gave it the finger. I felt really bad for Sansa when her view point of the world was shattered.
