I wasn't surprised at all when they turned against her - if anything, I was almost surprised it took that long for it to happen.

Surely OP doesn't think Ty Lee and Mai should have *stayed* in unhealthy relationships, right?
Who knows- Azula could possibly have had some kind of redemption arch involving the other two between AtLA and LoK... There's a lot we don't know.(no subject)

(Anonymous) 2012-06-11 11:22 pm (UTC)(link)She was an interesting, powerful female character among a cast of many others.
She was cool.
But
you know
she was a completely horrible human being.
let's keep that in mind.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-11 11:32 pm (UTC)(link)is this some kind of weird troll?
Or do you treat your friends the way Azula did and you just think this is totes normal and healthy behavior...?

Azula wasn't their friend. Azula threatened Tai-li and her whole circus until the girl fell in line. Azula used people, even her friends, as minions, to further herself.
No one owes it to an abusive psychopath to stay with them in case that psychopath "really needs them."

Plus, who says they really even betrayed her "for Zuko"? Sure, Mai kind of did, but her betraying Azula was part of her own character arc. She had been pushed around and controlled by people her whole life, and standing up to Azula was her putting an end to it.
Ty Lee betrayed Azula for Mai, and it just shows how much better of a friendship Ty Lee and Mai had than Azula had with either of them.

And there's no way to prove that Azula wouldn't have had a breakdown from something else anyway.
As much as I believe in sticking by your friends even in rough times, I don't think that includes abusive or dangerous relationships. And I don't think there's much they could have done to help her. Let's face it: Azula is vile. She's a great character, but a vile person. She was probably a sociopath from birth. And she alone is responsible for her behavior; you can't blame her actions on anyone else.

Azula, honey, don't you think more of the world would run on fear if it was really the most/only reliable way? There's a reason why we use love and trust, too...

Azula WAS a bad person, even before her breakdown - the sort that is toxic to be around and drags you down with her.
Nobody is responsible for another person's mental health. And some people are unstable regardless. If they would have stayed, her insanity might have showed later or in different ways...but her issues would still be there.

This is true in real life too. If a friend has become dangerous and toxic to the point where you, yourself are in danger, you have an obligation to yourself and society to oppose them. That toxic person can get better, but not if someone is allowing and encouraging their pathos.

Losing them isn't what caused her breakdown. Her reaction to losing them did. It's all on her.
