Because Azula was such a wonderful and healthy friend to have in a relationship.

To be fair, Azula's idea of friendship was pretty twisted: to keep them close to her, she made them fear her - because "trust is for fools, fear is the only reliable way".
I wasn't surprised at all when they turned against her - if anything, I was almost surprised it took that long for it to happen.

Azula had a lot of everything go to hell in a handbasket go to Hell in the end - grant it, some of which because her three main roll models raised her that way - but a lot of what she got she set up to have coming to her.

Surely OP doesn't think Ty Lee and Mai should have *stayed* in unhealthy relationships, right? Who knows- Azula could possibly have had some kind of redemption arch involving the other two between AtLA and LoK... There's a lot we don't know.

If the girls never betrayed her, we wouldn't have seen the vulnerable side of Azula. I love her last few episodes, they're fascinating to watch.

Yes, but, you have to consider the reason they betrayed her in the first place. She pretty much brought it on herself.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-11 11:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Uh, no. Azula was abusive and impossible to have a meaningful friendship with. Mai and Ty Lee weren't obligated to stay friends with her no matter how twisted, evil and hurtful she got just for the sake of keeping her sane.

Abusive people are not entitled to friendship for the sake of their own, poor mental stability.

I love Azula's character, and found her ridiculously captivating (and toy with the idea of writing an epic post A:tLA fic detailing her crazy adventures) but the faster Ty Lee and Mai got out of that mess, the better off they would have been.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-11 11:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Guys, okay, yeah, Azula was fierce and scary and a great villian.
She was an interesting, powerful female character among a cast of many others.
She was cool.
But
you know
she was a completely horrible human being.
let's keep that in mind.

haha what?

is this some kind of weird troll?

Or do you treat your friends the way Azula did and you just think this is totes normal and healthy behavior...?

[identity profile] cakemage.livejournal.com 2012-06-11 11:38 pm (UTC)(link)
As painful and triggering as it was to watch Azula's rapid downward spiral after she threw Mai and Ty Lee in prison, I don't blame them for what happened or what they did. Not one bit. I love Azula as a character and I still get kind of queasy thinking of how her story ended, but losing her only two friends was entirely her own fault. Also, her breakdown was long coming. Even if Mai and Ty Lee had stayed with her, I think she still would've eventually broken down. Losing them just hastened the process.

Like my mom used to say: To have a friend, you must be a friend.

Azula wasn't their friend. Azula threatened Tai-li and her whole circus until the girl fell in line. Azula used people, even her friends, as minions, to further herself.

No one owes it to an abusive psychopath to stay with them in case that psychopath "really needs them."

Everything that everyone else said so far.

Plus, who says they really even betrayed her "for Zuko"? Sure, Mai kind of did, but her betraying Azula was part of her own character arc. She had been pushed around and controlled by people her whole life, and standing up to Azula was her putting an end to it.

Ty Lee betrayed Azula for Mai, and it just shows how much better of a friendship Ty Lee and Mai had than Azula had with either of them.

Okay, I had a "friend" like Azula when I was ten. She picked me because I was vulnerable, and because I had been ostracized for so long that I was pathetically grateful anybody wanted to talk to me. After I figured out that I wasn't supposed to be afraid of my friends and left, she, an eleven year old girl stalked me for over three years until my family moved to another state. Then she stalked me online until I managed to shake her, and then she still badgered old friends of mine for my screenname for years until she finally gave up. After a year of her "friendship" and several more of her stalking, I have PTSD, depression, and physical scars from her punishments. She lied to me so constantly, I didn't know what end was up anymore, and I believed every horrible thing she told me I was. She used to play me and her brother and sister all against each other to maintain her control, and I just remember feeling so powerless and worthless, and like she was the only thing that mattered. After I left, she reacted the way she did and had a bit of a breakdown because she lost a possession. I wasn't allowed to rebel. That isn't friendship, and Mai and Ty Lee had every right to run as far and as fast as they could.

So you think they should have stayed in a relationship with someone they didn't like or respect and who certainly didn't respect them or treat them like true friends?

And there's no way to prove that Azula wouldn't have had a breakdown from something else anyway.

As much as I believe in sticking by your friends even in rough times, I don't think that includes abusive or dangerous relationships. And I don't think there's much they could have done to help her. Let's face it: Azula is vile. She's a great character, but a vile person. She was probably a sociopath from birth. And she alone is responsible for her behavior; you can't blame her actions on anyone else.

If you think Azula was a character who was genuinely a good person and didn't deserve to have her friends (whom she bullied in present day, not to mention in the few flashbacks we saw) betray her, then I beg you to re-examine your own relationships. That is not how friendship works.

I feel the need to point out Ty Lee was only with her in the first place because Azula threatened her, and Mai had nothing better to do. Also, Azula was rather on the abusive side when it came to the rest of Ozai's angels, so as sad as it is to watch her break down, she really brought it on herself.

Azula, honey, don't you think more of the world would run on fear if it was really the most/only reliable way? There's a reason why we use love and trust, too...

...sometimes you just have to remove yourself from friends who are unhealthy for you, even if that might affect them negatively.

Azula WAS a bad person, even before her breakdown - the sort that is toxic to be around and drags you down with her.

Nobody is responsible for another person's mental health. And some people are unstable regardless. If they would have stayed, her insanity might have showed later or in different ways...but her issues would still be there.

I disagree. Azula was already well on her way to a breakdown before her split up with her friends. Her friends could no longer in good conscious support her actions (it is not a sign of friendship to support a person no matter how destructive they are being). Ty Lee and Mai had an obligation to both themselves and to their moral centers to oppose Azula's actions. The fact that Azula chose to cut them off rather than listen to them and allow them to guide her actions was entirely on Azula. Her friends can not, nor should they feel responsible for her actions or what happened afterwards.

This is true in real life too. If a friend has become dangerous and toxic to the point where you, yourself are in danger, you have an obligation to yourself and society to oppose them. That toxic person can get better, but not if someone is allowing and encouraging their pathos.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-12 01:44 am (UTC)(link)
Bitch was batshit crazy to begin with. If anyone made her lose it, it was her father. It was only a matter of time before she cracked. Maybe losing her friends sped up the process, but those seeds were already sown.

While I do think Azula genuinely thought of Mai and Ty Lee as her friends -- she was just raised in an environment where she was encouraged to compete and to be ruthless to get what she wanted -- I also think she was a very manipulative and unhealthy person to start with. She was already slipping before she lost them, it was just the final push over the edge she needed to fall into complete self-destruct.

Losing them isn't what caused her breakdown. Her reaction to losing them did. It's all on her.
