I will quit watching Iron Man/Avengers movies. No lie.

On the plus side, RDJ has said he'll keep doing it as long as they'll let him. But I think IM3 is the last movie he's under contract with Marvel for, and with how much he made off Avengers... who knows what they'll do. :/

Could he possibly make cameos in the other Avengers' solo movies if they let him? I'd love to see Tony Stark visit Asgard.

I think I'd feel sorry for the actor who'd replace RDJ. I mean, the guy practically is Tony Stark (don't tell me you've never looked at a photo and wondered if it was from the set or a scene, or just him being interviewed).

I ... think they're not dumb enough to do that? Hopefully? Hollywood does, I believe, realize the importance of iconic actors, and Tony Stark more than anyone in the MCU is completely and totally tied to the actor who plays him at this point.

I mean, they had Harrison Ford play Indiana Jones again even at however the hell old his for a reason. Some people just can't be replaced.

I can't imagine them replacing him unless they are rebooting the entire franchise (which I can't see them doing anytime soon). They must know that would kill all future Iron Man movies, and probably future Avengers movies as well.

What's going to happen is that we are just going to get a different version of Tony Stark. RDJ will just be thought of as the Tony Stark. The model to which all are compared to. Just like Sean Connery is thought of as the James Bond and all the other actors who play the role will be forever compared to him.

I am not fretting. I think it would interesting in the far, far distant future to see another take on Stark. But right now, I am settled with Classic Stark.

About the only person I can think of to replace RDJ would, MAYBE, be Ed Quinn (best known for Nathan on Eureka) and that's largely because the creators of Eureka flat out admitted that Nathan Stark is totally based on Tony.

Still, basically replacing the face of modern day Marvel? YIKES.

I think everyone is only under contract for one more sequel as their respective hero, but everyone seems to think 3 Avengers films with this cast is endgame. After that, who knows? I personally want the studios to get their shit together so we can have Wolverine (and other mutants) and Spiderman in the Avengers where they belong.

Maybe in 2035 we'll have a whole Avengers reboot with a cameo by 70 year old RDJ as Howard Stark. (Although thinking of actors who came to prominence during my childhood as the "elder statesmen" of the acting community is kind of terrifying.)

But why would they replace him? I'd imagine that the character would age, too.

I'm obviously not cynically enough, but I doubt they'd ever do that. Pretty much everyone is aware of RDJ's success and the success of the MMU being pretty much eternally linked.

If it's an age-thing, SLJ is 63 and still doing (and looking impossibly good in) these films. And RDJ himself only seems to be getting better looking with age... Hair and makeup can sort out the rest.

i remember reading on ontd that marvel would give the main avengers characters a break after the third movie?

i don't see marvel studios attempting a reboot at least 15 to 20 years down the line. i think they'll invest on other properties for a while. i hope the doct strange movie is successful, it could be different not only for the sorcery angle but because you don't really have to make it super-hero-y.

His acting is outstanding. One of the best things about The Avengers. I thought all the acting was really good though, which contributed to my love of the movie...but his might have been the best (or maybe tied with Ruffalo, because I have such a soft spot for Ruffalo!Bruce <3)

There is no Tony Stark without Robert Downey Jr. Robert Downey Jr. IS Tony Stark. I'd say he's what Christopher Reeves is to Superman, except even more so.

The only way another actor will work is in a new rebooted universe several years from now. And they'll have to look REALLY hard.

(Also, I just gawked at that image of him for about thirty seconds before I even read the secret written on it. How does that man's face even exist in real life...)

I...don't think I can watch Iron Man movies anymore if it's not RDJ. Sometimes, if a character gets a new actor I can work with it, but Iron Man is not one of them.

I can see them stopping making Avengers/Marvel movies before they replace RDJ, honestly. What's more likely is just 'retiring' Iron Man until the inevitable reboot in 30 years. I really don't think there's anyone that can replace RDJ, or anyone that he'll let play Tony other than himself.
