I know this is a totally random and strange question, but it is something I'd really like input on, sooo: If there's a guy (from Texas) named Rudy, who has a nickname that sounds like people are saying "rude" -- how would you spell it? Rude, Rud', Rood, or...?

(Anonymous) 2012-06-13 11:43 pm (UTC)(link)
My guess is Rood as in kangaroo. Roo is actually one of my nieces nicknames.

I'd do Rood or Rude. :)

[personal profile] anonymouslyyours 2012-06-13 11:49 pm (UTC)(link)
I went to school in Texas with a guy who spelled it "Rude" but I don't know if that's the typical spelling.

[identity profile] galerian-ash.livejournal.com 2012-06-14 03:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Whether or not it's the typical spelling, it's at least some factual basis -- which is awesome! Thanks a million ♡

[personal profile] anonymouslyyours 2012-06-14 06:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Glad to help. Good luck!

Nicknames in Texas don't have usually have phonetic or logical spellings. I'd say that nickname would probably be spelled M-O-O-N, Rud'.

I'm just kidding; I just thought it was funny that you specified that he was from Texas. I'd say just dropping the -y off Rudy makes sense, but nicknames are something that may never even have a "proper" spelling because it's just something informal that you or you friends use.

LOL admittedly, names down here often make zero sense. I have a handbook detailing several Texanisms, and odd nicknames is one of them. XD

[personal profile] anonymouslyyours 2012-06-14 12:15 am (UTC)(link)
For some reason it is really popular for boys under fifteen to go by their middle names where I lived in Tx.

That's awesome- I was born in TX and my fiancé’s first base post tech school/when we get married is in San Antonio, so I got him several semi-joke books about Texas colloquialisms which I, at least, found exceedingly humorous. -_^

So true about nicknames not necessarily having a "proper" spelling. I know several people who have nicknames no one knows how to spell, myself included. That's right, I don't know how to spell my own nickname. *shrugs*

I just watched The Stand on Netflix, so the "M-O-O-N" reference made me LOL.

[identity profile] galerian-ash.livejournal.com 2012-06-14 04:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Haha, yeah, I know -- I thought it was a bit superfluous, but then again it could matter, so what the hey. Love the Stand reference XDb

Thanks so much for the input, I really appreciate it!

I'm tempted to spell it "Ruud" like Ruud van Nistelrooij LOL

[personal profile] majorshipper 2012-06-14 12:02 am (UTC)(link)
If it's pronounced like R-oo-d, then I'd personally spell it out as 'Rood or Rood' to indicate the non-standard meaning/pronunciation. But, tbh, I don't think there's one right way to spell it; nicknames like that are more phonetic than written. And if all else fails, Rude works. If you're writing a story or something, someone could comment on it, even.

[identity profile] galerian-ash.livejournal.com 2012-06-14 04:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, that's a good point. I also like the idea of having someone comment on it -- this is indeed for something I'm writing, so I might end up doing that! Thanks for the inspiration ;D

I'd go with Rude.

Not least because when I look at "Rud" I would think it rhymes with "mud" and "Rood" seems like something where you would put extra emphasis on the "oo." Maybe I'm overthinking this, but there you are.

Well, I appreciate your overthinking-ness, so it's all good! Thanks :)

Rhode maybe...? I mean, that's what I would go for if I was trying to be phonetic. Otherwise Rud'.

Rude. I'd like you to meet my best dude, Rude.

I'd read "Rood" to rhyme with hood, and "Rud" an Elmer Fudd.

[identity profile] galerian-ash.livejournal.com 2012-06-14 04:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Heh, that makes for a pretty good introduction! Thank you for the input; I hadn't realized the whole rood/hood thing before you mentioned it.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-14 02:17 am (UTC)(link)
Rude.

Where is [personal profile] cuteanimalpics today? Am I missing something obvious?

(Anonymous) 2012-06-14 04:22 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I was wondering that too, so I checked yesterday's thread, and I guess they had a final exam today? http://fandomsecrets.dreamwidth.org/622143.html?thread=553638207#cmt553638207
