I actually find this interesting about her, because I have a mom who really resents my half sister and the way she quietly tolerates him while hating his is actually really familiar to me. I also think it's a very complex, difficult think to ask a woman to love a child that her husband had with someone else. So while she might not
e the nicest of people, I find her very believable/real/human as a character.

Yeah, that would be my problem with her. And not because he's Jon, but because he was a child put under her care to raise as a parent and she had no love for him. And her reason for not loving him was displaced anger at her husband for being unfaithful. She never did anything to counteract that visceral yuck reaction, at least not in the half the book I read before I started skipping over her parts entirely.

She's much more bearable in the show. I can pretend she gave Jon to someone else to raise and form emotional bonds with.

I'm in the middle of the books and I'm so conflicted on Cat :c I completely understand her stance on Jon and find her quite a flawed but strong character, but I just hate some of the decisions she's made so much I want to shake her.

[personal profile] llei 2012-06-14 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)
If you are around OP, can you perhaps offer an explanation of why you hate her? As you've noticed, the majority of Cat!hate in fandom seems to boil down to invective, hyperbole, and double standards.

What is it that you hate about her? Or is it just an instinctual case of "I do not like thee, Dr Fell"?

(Anonymous) 2012-06-14 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)
fuckin' a, how many secrets like this are there going to be before you people leave the carcass alone.

[personal profile] unicornherds 2012-06-14 11:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Why do people hate her so much? I've only seen the first season of the show and never read any of the books (and have zero interest in doing so) but she seemed like a pretty tough lady to me. Nothing really hate worthy. I'm guessing it has something to do with the books?

[personal profile] fauxkaren 2012-06-14 11:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, Cat is not kind to Jon. She doesn't take him in as a son and when she's half out of her mind with exhaustion and grief at Bran's bedside, she tells Jon that it should have been him who fell from the tower. This is Cat's biggest flaw, for sure. But like, it inspires a really disproportionate amount of hate, if you ask me.

Some people hate her because they think she's a bad mother since she stayed with Robb (the son who was waging a rebellion) instead of going home to Winterfell with her other sons who were far away from the fighting and should have been perfectly safe (and they would have been too if Robb had listened to her about not sending Theon to Balon).

Others blame her for starting the war by capturing Tyrion (even though Cat had no reason to distrust Petyr's information and tried to avoid Tyrion all together). And really, no one could have expected Tywin's MASSIVE overreaction which started the war more than Cat's actions, imo.

Still others think she's an idiot because she traded Jaime for her girls. This isn't the most strategic move, but I love that moment because Cat brings a real human side to the whole conflict. In the books, she releases Jaime after finding out about Bran and Rickon's "deaths" and that is just the final straw. She can't sit by and do nothing while there is a chance that she could do SOMETHING to save her remaining children.

Then you have people who think she's whiny because in the chapter she narrates she mourns her dead husband.

Some people hate her because she pities Brienne (internally not to Brienne's face) for being ugly when Cat first sees her because Cat knows how hard much beauty is valued for women of Brienne's station. Although Cat and Brienne actually have a good relationship, so... I don't get hating her for that.

It's sort of hard to work out, because so much venom gets flung her way and an awful lot of it in certain corners is steeped in misogyny.

I think the root of it for a lot of people is the conflict between Cat and Jon Snow. We get more of her dislike for Jon early in the first book than there is in the TV show.

Jon Snow is a fandom favourite (young man, hard done by, pretty, emo, gets to be a bit of a hero despite illegitimacy). He's very young when we first meet him, and fits very easily into a 'goodie' paradigm. Cat's reasons for bitterness are less easily relatable. I think they are very human, and understandable, and that she's in a crap situation. But for some, she triggers their 'baddie' reflex too hard to care about that, because she's the most immediately audible voice making Jon aware of his status as a bastard.

(I don't mean to denigrate any legit Cat haters. I think we all have characters who hit a tender spot with us so that we're less-interested in trying for empathy with them. I have no patience for the "misunderstood and attractive villain". I guess plenty of people aren't into seeing past the "wicked stepmother". I think they're missing out on one of the best stories in ASoIaF by simplifying Cat, but most of us are guilty of that with some archetype.)

Without knowing what your actual reason is for hating Catelyn, there's not much I can say except that I had a difficult time liking her at first because of the way she treated Jon Snow for something he had no control over. It helped to remind myself that in a society where women have little value beyond serving as wives and baby machines, your husband bringing home proof that he cheated on you would be a huge blow to your sense of self-worth. Not that our society is dramatically better, or that it excuses how she treated him, but it at least invokes a sense of sympathy.

I don't know, I like her quite a bit, actually. She's complicated and interesting. Her decisions don't necessarily always have to be the right ones, but we do see that she thinks a good deal about everything around her instead of just diving into things.

As for her coldness to Jon, why is everyone expecting her to be a saint in everything she does? She was angry that her husband had an affair and then proceeded to, as she saw it, rub her face in it every day for what, fifteen years? She hates him. It's wrong, yeah, but I can see where the hatred stemmed from. She couldn't hate her husband, so she turned it on Jon.

It's one of the flaws that make her interesting.

Then again, I like Sansa too, and find her more relatable than Arya to my own personality, so apparently I'm just an idiot.(And Tyrion. He's a fantastic character)

Not going to use the word "hate" (in this series, I only use that word for The Mountain and Joffrey), but Catelyn is absolutely one of my least favourite characters. And not because of how she treated Jon - I dislike him even more (until the fifth book).

But Catelyn is very judgemental. I think she is a good character, but I can't stand her. All of her actions gets justified with "she's a mother", and she is just so overconfident in all of her decisions. She judges every one she meets with this condescending attitude, and doesn't seem to understand why Robb doesn't want his mother on the battlefield with him.

It's such a shame, because her chapters are quite interesting, but she isn't. She's just unpleasant.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-15 01:20 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't hate her or anything, she just kind of bores me.

[personal profile] nemo_de_la_mer 2012-06-15 01:41 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm just finishing A Clash of Kings, and there was only one scene I liked her in. It was the scene in which she was interrogating Jamie Lannister.

I just find her chapters filled of 'Oh maybe I shouldn't have done that' or 'whine whine whine whine'. I just can't take it. She should just buckle down and accept.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-15 07:31 pm (UTC)(link)
I've only read the first book and part of the second but so far I've found her to be a bit whiny and impulsive (like immediately believing her sister's note without any questioning of her, her capture of Tyrion, which wasn't completely her fault but still). On that note I do think she cares a great deal about her family and especially her children. The love she has for them is more apparent than any other mother's love, except maybe for Lysa but her's is rather unhealthy.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-16 12:18 am (UTC)(link)
I don't like her for several reasons, the LEAST of which is her treatment of Jon. She's constantly making selfish, self-centered decisions and can't see anything beyond the scope of her own family (many of which she treats quite poorly including Rickon, Arya and Edmund).

She cares little about the common people of the north. She makes noise about caring, but her actions belie her true feelings. She whines constantly and justifies everything through the lens of "I'm a mother". She pretty actively sells out her son, Robb, and all the lords of the North when she frees Jaime. All in the HOPE of getting her daughters back when, honestly, she should have fucking known better.
