I'm getting the impression that the author didn't categorize the fic as "gen" though. They might have just written the summary and started telling the story.

Also, while I've never done this, I think all the people on this thread are acting like entitled assholes. The author doesn't have to say what pairings will be END GAME in a story where pairings aren't really the focus. Seriously, books don't have to do this. TV shows don't have to do this. Why the hell does fanfic have to do this? :/

(Also, there are cases where the author may want to have a pairing be a surprise. I've seen that in some fanfics, and I've really enjoyed it. Sometimes it's not as enjoyable when you know that the two characters have to end up together from the get-go).

People on here need to get off their high horses. The author can do whatever the hell he or she wants.

You should probably just tell us that you didn't categorize it as gen op.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-19 01:27 am (UTC)(link)
...Not the OP. :/

However, the OP said, "It could be considered a gen story." The fact that they used the modal verb "could" leads me to believe that they didn't directly state that their story was "gen" when posting it.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-19 01:25 am (UTC)(link)
Of course they don't have to!

But the op all but admitted to doing this on purpose to troll the readers.

And that's not cool.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-19 01:35 am (UTC)(link)
...But they didn't admit that?

I agree with people that the person is being kind of malicious, but I don't think they are in any way obligated to label their story in a specific way in order to please people.

From what I garnered, the writer planed for this to eventually be a het story and noticed more slash fans were following the fic. While I think their attitude toward slashers is kind of nasty, I don't think they purposely wrote a gen fic that would rope in slashers and then change it to het. I think it was more that they made the observation and went, "Ha, ha, suckers; this is actually a het fic."

Still not nice, but it's not exactly a "troll" maneuver.

same anon as above

Also, comparing fanfiction to other media is kind of silly. It's a whole other beast, with its own conventions.

Books, movies, etc. don't have trigger warnings, and yet many fanfiction authors warn for sexual content, death, etc.

THEY DON'T HAVE TO.

But they still do it.

Frankly, if we all stuck to "we don't have to do it" as an excuse, we'd all be dicks being dicks to other dicks all the damn time.

No offense to penises intended. D:

I think trigger warnings are nice or whatever, but I think they are another thing that no one is obligated to use. It annoys me when people act like authors are douches for not using them or that they are entitled to them.

If I want to accept the rules and freedoms of original fiction, I'll read a book. I'm reading fanfic in a specific fandom for a reason. Just put the damn label on it and quit pretending it's a master work of suspense.

LOL!

To Secret Poster:
I don't understand this secret because it makes no sense whatsoever.
It sounds like the Secret Poster is just trying to gain more readers but in the end will lose them. And if more slash readers follow the story (and isn't it creepy that you know that) and you didn't give any indication that the story is slash why should they be disappointed that there will be no slash pairing? There seems to be no "gen"-label and if you put no slash-warning (did you indicate that may be slash just to troll?) a lot of people may nevertheless assume there will be het - so not so surprising any more.

To Poster above:
How do you know that in this story the pairings aren't really the focus (when the story obviously still progresses in this direction) except you really are the Secret Poster?
You don't have to reveal the pairing but you can maybe say there's a "surprise-pairing" or you won't reveal the pairing before.

The people on this thread are not acting like entitled assholes. The secret poster needs to get of her/his high horse because she/he seems to enjoy trolling for no reason.

And books and tv shows are two very different animals from fanfic because (as the name indicates) fanfics are written as fanfics about existing books/tv shows.
