I vastly prefer Hatoful as well - idk, I don't think Katawa Shoujo is like terrible, it's just never quite managed to engage me though I think I've given it a fair chance.

But I haven't really seen people writing off Hatoful either - it's a lot more common to see people flailing about how they never could have dreamed they would feel all that over a bunch of pigeons!
(With you re: Shuu also. Personally Sakuya is so my favourite <3)

I don't understand why people refer to Japanese manga/anime with mispronounced Engrish titles. The title is clearly supposed to be Hateful Boyfriend. Why can't you just call it that?

I can't tell if you are trolling or joking or whatever, but "hato" is the Japanese word for pigeon

So no

It's not

(Anonymous) 2012-06-26 11:34 pm (UTC)(link)
...so is the title really supposed to be "Pigeonful Boyfriend"?

I think it's a play on words, but the "hato" part is definitely supposed to be there.

Besides, there are plenty of anime/manga/video games from Japan that have titles with English in them that don't make any sense

(Anonymous) 2012-06-26 11:40 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't understand how "pigeon boyfriend" is a pun, but okay. At least "Hateful Boyfriend" makes sense.

TBH I always thought that keeping the Engrish titles was just something weeabos did to feel more Japanese.

But it's a three-way pun on heart, hate, and pigeon...

[personal profile] vethica 2012-06-27 01:42 am (UTC)(link)
How is it a pun on hate?

(Anonymous) 2012-06-27 02:39 am (UTC)(link)
Sorry, the comment I replied to got my words mixed up, it's still a three-way pun but that one's "hurt". It's in the (english version of the) game, in the second half, the 'hatoful boyfriend' in the text box changes to 'hurtful boyfriend'

(Anonymous) 2012-06-27 02:44 am (UTC)(link)
/same
and if you meant like linguistically how does it work out, はーとふる (lit. hātofuru, romanised = Hatoful) is basically a transliteration to be used for both "heartful" and "hurtful", as well as the hato/pigeon thing.

Like ppl before me have pointed out, hato is the Japanese word for pigeon/dove, but hatoful also means "heartful".
It's not about trying to sound like a weeaboo, it's about pointing out a pun to those who understand the language.

I find it funny that you didn't use an actual image of a character from the game, but fanart of the character drawn in human form. That seems to kind of negate your point IMO

[personal profile] sachiko_san 2012-06-27 12:32 am (UTC)(link)
It's a dating sim about pigeons, of course people aren't going to take it seriously. Even Cracked did an article about weird Japanese dating sims and Hatoful Boyfriend was on that list.

[personal profile] ooh_mrdarcy 2012-06-27 12:32 am (UTC)(link)
but... it's a pigeon dating sim

It had a deeper meaning to it?

(Anonymous) 2012-06-27 03:16 am (UTC)(link)
While you can see the character's human designs, I think a lot of it is people connecting with the characters despite them being pidgeons.

It actually is a surprisingly well-written game. Like, you start off being like HAHA PIGEONS but then damn, two or three of the storylines made me tear up.
ooh_mrdarcy: gay police (Default)

[personal profile] ooh_mrdarcy 2012-06-27 02:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I know, I've played it.
I never teared up though. I kept going from HAHA PIGEONS to OMG THIS IS GREAT to HOLY FUCK WHAT IS THIS.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-27 12:39 am (UTC)(link)
I hate Katawa simply because of how the devs would spam the fuck out of 4chan boards with it when it was in development.

It wasn't very subtle.

The concept of Hatoful Boyfriend is so silly that it would feel weird if everyone took it too seriously.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-27 12:51 am (UTC)(link)
I fucking love it too. The story is amazing.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-27 05:41 am (UTC)(link)
it IS lol pigeon dating sim...but it's the best damned pigeon dating sim

UGH I bought this goddamn game and it literally ate my evenings for the next two weeks. SO GOOD. I am still reading Angie Gallant's LP for it (FAT BIIIIIRD!!!) haha, like, a month after I finished it XD

AND BBL.

OH GOD. BBL FEELS.

So basically anon, no one can possibly predict how amazing this game is, and all efforts must be made to try and make people play it and get past the silly amazing pigeon pictures :DDD

I love Shuu, but Nanaki is my favourite EVER. And Nageki ;____;

sadface cos I don't have my Nanaki sleepyquail icon on this account ):

(Anonymous) 2012-06-27 10:45 am (UTC)(link)
I don't see why there needs to be a comparison?

I haven't played Hatoful Boyfriend (I'd like to, but I just haven't got around to it yet) but I have played Katawa Shoujo, and while I wasn't a fan of the writing in general or of some story choices, there were a few characters that I got really, really attached to and who I'd love to squee about and draw and write meta and fic for. Of course, Katawa Shoujo doesn't have an LJ or tumblr type fandom, and I'm not really sure I'd be be comfortable being active in the kind of fandom it does have. At least the Hatoful Boyfriend folks had (have?) a kink meme going for a little while.

Plus, showing interest in Katawa Shoujo doesn't seem to get a much better response than showing interest in Hatoful Boyfriend. I don't know if liking Hatoful Boyfriend is socially unacceptable or not, but I'm always worried about bringing up Katawa Shoujo because I don't want people to think I have some creepy fetishes about disability.

Hatoful will probably be really great too, it's just... Katawa Shoujo fans are not drowning in a sea of fandom love either, especially not if we're the girlfandom types.

I haven't played Katawa Shoujo, and am not really planning on doing it, but...

I love Hatoful Boyfriend to BITS! So much love for this secret. (My favorite character is Yuuya. Uh... Lucky me? >_>;;)
