I don't understand why people refer to Japanese manga/anime with mispronounced Engrish titles. The title is clearly supposed to be Hateful Boyfriend. Why can't you just call it that?

I can't tell if you are trolling or joking or whatever, but "hato" is the Japanese word for pigeon

So no

It's not

(Anonymous) 2012-06-26 11:34 pm (UTC)(link)
...so is the title really supposed to be "Pigeonful Boyfriend"?

I think it's a play on words, but the "hato" part is definitely supposed to be there.

Besides, there are plenty of anime/manga/video games from Japan that have titles with English in them that don't make any sense

I don't understand how "pigeon boyfriend" is a pun, but okay. At least "Hateful Boyfriend" makes sense.

TBH I always thought that keeping the Engrish titles was just something weeabos did to feel more Japanese.

I think the "hato" is supposed to also sound like "heart" (the way that English word is usually pronounced in Japanese is "ha-to" after all). So, it's a play on words, "pigeon-ful boyfriend" and also "heartful boyfriend" (or I guess "hateful" also as someone below pointed out)

(Anonymous) 2012-06-26 11:32 pm (UTC)(link)
But it's a three-way pun on heart, hate, and pigeon...

How is it a pun on hate?

(Anonymous) 2012-06-27 02:39 am (UTC)(link)
Sorry, the comment I replied to got my words mixed up, it's still a three-way pun but that one's "hurt". It's in the (english version of the) game, in the second half, the 'hatoful boyfriend' in the text box changes to 'hurtful boyfriend'

(Anonymous) 2012-06-27 02:44 am (UTC)(link)
/same
and if you meant like linguistically how does it work out, はーとふる (lit. hātofuru, romanised = Hatoful) is basically a transliteration to be used for both "heartful" and "hurtful", as well as the hato/pigeon thing.

Ahhh okay. I was thinking, "but hate is pronounced totally differently!" Hurt I can understand. :P

OH MY GOD, I SEE THE TEXT BOX NOW!! All the way through, I thought it was the top window text that changed to Hurtful, lol. Now I feel like a derp XD

Like ppl before me have pointed out, hato is the Japanese word for pigeon/dove, but hatoful also means "heartful".
It's not about trying to sound like a weeaboo, it's about pointing out a pun to those who understand the language.
