So, serious question: those of you with misophonia for eating noises... how do you bear to eat anything yourselves? I know the sounds are different than hearing someone else eating, but they're still there and, I presume, more inescapable than other people's noises.

When it's me, it just... doesn't bother me. It sounds entirely different and doesn't trigger it in the same way.

Thanks for the answer! :)

It doesn't bother me. It sounds different, though there are a small group of people with misophonia that are triggered by their own eating. They have to eat while listening to music.

It's usually the most widely used coping method, that and earplugs. Sadly there isn't a cure yet, and the medical community has only fairly recently started looking into it :(

Tell me about it, ugh. I've been in therapy for years for anxiety problems. A couple years ago I tried bringing up Misophonia by it's name and describing my symptoms. I'd done my own research that made me go "Ah! That's me!" But the therapist and the psychiatrist had never even *heard* of this and neither of them could be bothered to even give it consideration.

I've heard similar experiences. It's frustrating that it's still lumped in with OCD or other sound disorders. I'm sorry that happened to you!

Thanks for the answer! :\ It seems like it would extra-aggravating to deal with for those who are triggered even by their own noises. At least other people you can escape for periods of time. I can't even imagine.

I'm not the best person to answer since chewing doesn't usually trigger me, but for me it's basically summed up by "It's different." Not an interesting answer, I know. :-/

That said, I can't stand heavy breathing or snoring and this one includes myself. To get to sleep I *have* to have my fan (or something that would make a neutral background noise loud and constant enough to block out breathing sounds without keeping me awake itself).

Yay for white noise! It's not necessarily a requirement for me, but it's definitely preferred. I have an old floor fan from childhood that my parents originally bought to help me sleep, because without it I apparently had violent nightmares involving flying snakes or something. :) /csb

Most people with misophonia are not triggered by sounds that they themselves make; some do, however. For example, I am not generally triggered by the sound of a person breathing unless I'm trying to sleep - and when I'm trying to sleep, even the sound of my OWN breathing will keep me awake. For this reason, I have to always have a fan on while I'm falling asleep so that I can't hear myself breathing, or else I literally just cannot go to sleep.
