Today we're paying a quick tribute to our best friends- that is, the canine companions that stayed with us through perilous journeys and difficult times... or the pets that our video game heroes have had by their sides. I might not get the breeds exactly right, and if you find one that matches better, do tell! Other than that, I'll do my best to get some cute pics up. But before that, though:

...No, wait, that's wrong. Let's do it a little differently today, though.



Some of you might've seen this gif around before. As cute as the name 'nope spider' is, it's actually known as either the Wheel Spider or Golden Wheel Spider. It lives in Southern Africa, and is a huntsman spider. The wheels you can see it do down slopes are what happens when it notices a parasitic wasp around and needs to get out of there quickly. Nothing quite like barrelling down the side of a dune at a meter a second!

Here's what it looks like when it's not spinning, and here's a video of its fascinating antics!

The interesting thing is that this spider isn't the only animal that's mastered the art of rolling out of there. There's an inch-long pebble toad that does the same thing, actually, pebbling up and bouncing down the slopes it's on. And this guy does it in response to a predatory spider.

I always thought of Angelo as a border collie for some reason. o_0

As for the rolling spider... turns out nature has a thing for cratures that would escape in improbable manners *shudders at the word "gliding snake"*

I'm always amazed when I see animal documentaries with such brilliant footage. The Pebble Toad was crazy. First that shot with the toad in focus and the spider juuust out of focus. Then the one with the toad falling in the direction of the camera from above. Also the spider one with the wasp digging it out of the sand. The film crew must have the patience of a rock.

P.S. The dogs are really cute.
